Assignment #4
RESEARCH ON FILIPINO INVENTIONS/FILIPINO TECHNOLOGY

I. Name of Filipino Inventor

 Gregorio Y. Zara

II. Name of invention or technology invented

 The Two-Way Videophone, patented as “photo phone signal separator

network”

III. Picture of the technology invented

IV. When it was invented

 The Two-Way Videophone was invented on the year 1955.

V. When it was recognized and presented to the public

 Five years later, the American telecommunications giant AT&T began

developing a commercial application of what was then called a “picture
phone” based on the principles of Zara’s invention. The first working
videophone was initially presented to the American public at the World Fair in
New York City in 1964.
VI. Purpose of the Technology invented

 National Scientist Gregorio Y. Zara, a physicist, invented a device that makes

it possible for two persons to see each other on a television while talking on
the telephone.

VII. Development brought by the utilization and application of the invented Filipino
technology.

 Although it did not sell. The videophone that Zara developed was not meant
as a commercial product anyway. But it was not until the 1960s that AT&T
began to work on a model of a video phone, or “picturephone” for public
consumption. The company released the video phone in 1964 at the New York
World’s Fair. That did not go well for AT&T too, with the device being seen
as impractical at the time. It made a comeback just as the digital age was
starting late in the 1990s. Video phones took off as a device that made distant
learning and video conferencing easier than ever, in addition to its being
helpful with the hearing impaired. With this invention, knowledge, and
adaptation of this made video calling what it is today. Video calling is an
activity that is now easily done by everyone thanks to modern technology.
One only needs a smartphone with a camera and an Internet connection to
chat live with another person in other parts of the world. There are already
several chatting apps capable of this feature.
