I. INTRODUCTION

Most of us tend to take printed materials for granted, but imagine

life today if the printing press had never been invented. We would not have

books, magazines or newspapers; posters, flyers, brochures, pamphlets

and mailers would not exist. The printing press allows us to share large

amounts of information quickly and in huge numbers because it can print

multiple copies. In fact, the printing press is so significant that it has come

to be known as one of the most important inventions of our time. It

drastically changed the way society evolved.

Clothing is one of the essentials a person must have. A T-shirt is a

style of unisex fabric shirt named after the T-shape of its body and sleeves.

It normally has short sleeves and a round neckline. It is a slip-on garment

without buttons.

Looking cool in printed t-shirts not only adds style to your look but it

also offers a great deal of uniqueness. But have you ever stopped and

think where it all started and how long have people been printing T-shirts.

The modern screen printing process was first patented in Manchester

by Samuel Simon in 1907. A few years earlier also in Manchester, the first

T-shirts began to emerge from the poverty ridden slums surrounding the
2

textile mills. The T-shirt was quickly adapted by street gangs known as

scuttlers who regularly terrorized the local community. It was these

scuttlers who as soldiers wore their T-shirts under their uniforms in the

trenches of northern France. This was adapted by American troops which

lead to the T-shirt becoming a universal item of clothing. The images of

Hollywood stars such as James Dean and Marlon Brando wearing white T-

shirts has made the simple T-shirt a global fashion item found in wardrobes

all over the world. They are favorites of children, teenagers, men and

women regardless of age. It is one of the garments that are worn in all

parts of the world (Basa, 2013).

Printed T-shirts nowadays add style to the looks of a person

regardless of age and gender. Most of them prefer to wear printed T-shirts

than just an ordinary plain T-shirt. Prints in T-shirt can be customized or

ready-made.

A tarpaulin or tarp, is a large sheet of strong, flexible, water-resistant

or waterproof material, often cloth such as canvas or polyester coated with

polyurethane, or made of plastics such as polyethylene. In some places

such as Australia, and in military slang, a tarp may be known as a hootch.

Tarpaulins often have reinforced grommets at the corners and along the
3

sides to form attachment points for rope, allowing them to be tied down or

suspended.

Inexpensive modern tarpaulins are made from woven polyethylene;

this material is so associated with tarpaulins that it has become colloquially

known in some quarters as polytarp (www.wikipedia.com).

II. COMPANY SUMMARY/PRODUCT AND SERVICE DESCRIPTION

T-shirt and Tarpaulin Printing business is considered to be one of the

best small-scale entrepreneurial businesses. If a person is interested in a

small entrepreneurial unit, he or she can think of starting a T-shirt and

tarpaulin printing business. This type of business does not need much

money for the initial investment. The investment is modest as compared to

the potential of gaining profits which can be attained quickly. Today, T-shirt

industry is considered to be the multibillion industry and we can see various

types of T-shirts in the market that are printed using traditional screen

printing to modern machinery (See Exhibit IV).

The proposed project is a T-shirt and Tarpaulin printing business,

which will be named “Tee-TarpsQuad Printing Shop” (See Exhibit I). It

will be located in Binakayan, Kawit, Cavite, just beside Bank of the

Philippine Islands (See Exhibit II). The business is very accessible to all
4

target customers. On its first three years of operation, the business will

concentrate only on T-shirt and tarpaulin printing; and after three years

other services can also be offered like photo printing, ID lamination,

document printing, and personalized items like mugs, keychains, tumblers

and caps.

The firm will be rendering its services on an eight-hour a day basis

which is from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with 1 hour lunch break from Monday to

Saturday. Its initial capitalization is Php 300,000.00 which is just enough for

the acquisition of the needed machineries and equipment and for the rental

fees.

III. TYPE OF BUSINESS ORGANIZATION

The business will be organized as a sole proprietorship. It is

considered by the owner due to the following reasons:

 It requires a limited amount of capital

 It is easy to start

 It does not require so many documents

 There is ease in the operation of a business

5

The system of management will be that of the owner-manager. The

manager will see to it that all initial requirements are done during the

early stages of the project. Daily supervision will help things easily

organized and make sure that all details of the business are followed.

The manager will also perform the duties of a purchaser of materials

needed by the business. Purchasing will be done every Sunday and

extra purchases will be made during weekdays if the need arises.

IV. PERSONNEL ASPECTS

Personnel or manpower is very important to any firm. Without which,

Other resources, physical and financial cannot be put into use. To achieve

any business goal, manpower requirements need to be properly assessed.

V. MARKETING ASPECT

Marketing is a business function that identifies customer needs and

wants, determines which target markets the organization can serve best,

and designs appropriate products, services and programs to serve these

markets. However, marketing is much more than just an isolated business

function; it is a philosophy that guides the entire organization. It is the heart

and soul or the “lifeblood” of the business firm because without it, the firm

will not exist. The goal of marketing is to create customer satisfaction

profitably by building value-laden relationships with important customers.

10

According to Peter Drucker, “Know and understand your customers

because if you have the right product or service, the product will sell itself.”

An organization can gain market leadership by understanding

consumer needs and finding solutions that delight customers through

superior value and quality service.

The market study seeks to determine the following:

a. The size, nature and growth of the total demand for T-shirt and

tarpaulin printing;

b. The supply situation in Kawit, Cavite and the nature of competition;

c. The description and prices of services to be offered;

d. The different factors affecting the market; and

e. The appropriate marketing program for the services.

DEMAND ANALYSIS

The demand analysis involves the study of the group of people who

are willing and able to buy the services to be offered. The demand for a

service has two dimensions’ its characteristics and its size. A characteristic

involves the jobs of the people or their capacity to buy; and size is the

number of people in the target place.

11

Population is essential in projecting the demand; it is the total number

of persons living in the area. An increase in population also means that

there is an increase in potential buyers were in it is relative to the increase

in demand. Available data to compute for the projected demand is the

survey coming from the National Statistics Office (NSO), Trece Martirez

City, Cavite.

DEMAND AND SUPPLY ANALYSIS

In order to determine the market share of the business, there is a

need to know first the difference between the projected demand and the

projected supply.

The unfilled demand can really affect the operation as the sales of the

business. Therefore, this unfilled demand should be given an immediate

solution in order to increase sales and to serve many customers.

TABLE 10

Based on the demand gap between the demand and the supply, the

entrepreneur/owner forecasted to have a 40% of the market share on its

first year of operation and it will increase by 5% annually.

VI. PRICING STRATEGIES

The determination of prices of the services to be offered is as crucial

as of other marketing activities. This will dictate the projections and other

income operations of the business.

20

The following prices were based on the existing and similar

businesses with considerations on the present status of the market.

2020 6% P 153 P 55 P 265 P 175

(The price for tarpaulin printing will be set at Php 20.00 per square foot).

The above prices are considered higher than the existing competitors

because Tee-TarpsQuad Printing Shop will still provide the services to

customers even if the printing to be acquired is not in volume or in large

quantities. As per interviews to the existing competitors, their prices (as

presented in Table 6) are lower because they are only accepting printing

services in large volume; which is 12 pieces as the minimum.

VII. MACHINERIES, EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES

The proposed business will acquire the necessary machineries,

21

Equipment and supplies suited for the effective performance of its services

(See Exhibit IV). It will be purchased from a reliable supplier. The following

machineries, equipment and supplies together with the cost and quantity

are necessary in T-shirt and Tarpaulin printing. Their quantities are

sufficient to ensure maximum capacity of service. Costs are based on their

current prices.

VIII. FACTORS AFFECTING THE MARKET

23

There are several factors that may affect the market of “Tee-

TarpsQuad” Printing Shop. These contributing factors may deliver negative

effects on the market of this business and they are the following:

 Demand Size

Demand refers to how much (quantity) of a product or service is

desired by buyers. The quantity demanded is the amount of a product

customers are willing to acquire at a certain price which may

eventually affect the income of a business like a T-shirt and Tarpaulin

printing shop. With this, the firm must be ready by offering better

quality of printouts of T-shirts and tarpaulins to customers at

affordable price.

 Raw materials

The firm’s printing processes if not properly done may consume

significant amount of raw materials which may lead to a bigger impact

on the company’s earnings. Productivity improvements and cost

reduction must be properly explained to production workers and the

firm can purchase raw materials like paint through negotiated long-

term contracts with suppliers to minimize the impact of price

fluctuations.
24

 Prices of T-shirt and Tarpaulin Printouts

Many business owners make the mistake that competition begins and

ends with who among them can provide the lowest price to

customers. Still, price is important; but consider also the quality of

services and finished products that a customer may get.

 Competition

There is an intense rivalry in the industry nowadays, as the number of

firms engaged in the same type of business. In competition, the firm

who can satisfy the needs and wants of customers will surely get a

higher market share. The best thing is how the company’s services

differ from the services offered by other firms in relation to quality and

prices.

 Economic Condition

The economy changes quite rapidly. With this, change in the

marketing strategy is also required. As the budget of the customer

drops, the spending pattern may also drop. To be sure that the

business is not adversely affected, a very minimal increase in its

prices will be done which is just enough within the reach of its

customers.

IX. MARKETING PROGRAM

25

In a service business, you are marketing yourself – your expertise

and capabilities, your reliability, and your commitment to provide excellent

service. Service is not a tangible commodity, so what you are selling is the

promise to deliver what you set to deliver. Your marketing efforts will have

to focus on communicating that promise to your clientele.

Selling a service is more difficult than selling a tangible product.

Customers are much less certain when they are buying a service, since

what they are buying is merely a promise that the seller will do something

for them in a way that will satisfy their expectations.

A. Advertisement through the Internet

The business will have its official website that may include the

business name, address and contact number, types of services and

prices.

B. Distribution of Leaflets

This will be done a week before the opening of the Printing Shop so

that the target customers in Kawit, Cavite will be aware about the new

business.
26

C. Tarpaulins

These will be posted or displayed in areas that can easily be noticed,

seen or read by potential customers. The areas to be included are:

Basketball Court in Tabon, Barangay Hall in Wakas, in-front of St.

Mary Magdalene Academy, Aguinaldo Park, Island Cove and

Binakayan Public Market.

D. Referrals

The recommendation of a satisfied client is often the most effective

way of bringing in new clients. People tend to view recommendations

from those who have previously used the service as highly credible,

and are more inclined to use the recommended service. Referrals,

however, do not always come easily. Most often, you have to ask for

it. If one of your clients seems satisfied with your service, request him

or her to refer your business to their friends or acquaintances that

may benefit from your service.
