Case Overview

In recent years, oil and gas industry has experienced the biggest downturn in its
history. Since the pandemic, this situation impacts the oil and gas industry to find
the best way to survive this arduous condition, including oil rig platform that
needs to adapt in this new era to survive.

This year, Petrolida demands you to act as a contractor to design semi-submers-

ible platform that suitable for the specific offshore oil field stated by the commit-
tee and also make it economically beneficial. Stybarrow field is located 51 kilome-
tres to the northwest of the North West Cape of Western Australia in water depths
of approximately 800-1000 m. This field has recoverable reserves estimated to be
about 80 million barrels of oil and a gas production capacity of 45 million stan-
dard cubic feet per day. The main problems of this location is harsh environment
for petroleum operations, including cyclone and waves as well as deep water
depths. The participants are asked to make smart and reliable semi-submersible
oil rig design that able to produce without neglecting healthy of this pandemic
COVID-19, while at the same time creating smart-economic aspect.

Case Overview
Natural gas previously has accounted for 15% of Indonesia's energy mix and
will play a much larger role in the future energy mix. The government plans to
double its consumption of natural gas to more than 30 percent by 2025. To
achieve this goal, Indonesia will need to tap its western ocean basins rich in
resources such as Gendalo field. Gendalo field is located in the Kutei Basin in
Makassar Strait. With that being said, this field is also one of the most expensive
projects since this field is categorized as an Indonesia Deepwater Development
(IDD) which has 975-1785 m reservoir depth. The project is expected to have a
capacity of 1.1 billion cubic feet of natural gas and 47,000 barrels of condensate
per day.
A challenge in exploiting the field is the presence of Gas Condensates along
with natural-gas hydrates and wax deposition. Hydrates would form solid plugs
that can block production and damage equipment. Wax deposition would restrict
gas flow in the pipeline and create pressure abnormalities that can reduce or
interrupt production. This undesirable phenomenon is commonly known by the
name Flow Assurance Issue in which many oil and gas operators in Indonesia
have spent a lot of capital to deal with it. To overcome this obstacle, how to main-
tain the flow assurance of the Gendalo Field with advanced technology to opti-
mize the production in the most feasible way without overlooking the economical
and environmental aspects?
