- E270-0001: Scanner Unit communication error. (The vertical scanning synchronous signal
(VSYNC) was not transmitted normally at the Scanner Unit side that communicates with the
Main Controller PCB.)
- E270-0002: Scanner Unit communication error. (The vertical scanning synchronous signal
(VSYNC) was not transmitted due to a horizontal scanning synchronous signal (HSYNC) error
which is sent to the Main Controller PCB.)
[Reference]
Previously it was difficult to identify the cause for errors that occur due to a broken flat cable since
there are many errors available. To make an improvement on the issue, a change in the software
has been made (MN-CONT v12.07 or later) so that an E270-0002 is displayed when the signal for
a broken flat cable is detected. (Refer to N25-041.pdf)
The following Technical Publication can also be referred to as they are related to errors attributable
to a flat cable:
- When an E280-0002 is displayed, as smoothness of the flat cable may be attributable to broken
cable, the flat cable needs to be replaced and a friction sheet needs to be attached. (Refer to N21-
045.pdf)
- When E302-0001 is displayed, soiling on the mirror is probably the cause, so the mirror will need
to be cleaned. (Refer to N25-042.pdf)

[Cause]
There are 2 causes below:

1. The terminals [1] of the flat cable and the terminals [2] of the connector are connected to the
reader PCB. The terminals [2] are placed on the terminal contacts [1] shown in figure [A].

N25-032-2

When the dimensional accuracy for the flat cable is inadequate, terminals [1] and terminals
contacts [2] are off the correct positions and contact at their sides as Figure [B] shows. If the
products are shipped in this state, there may be no contact of the terminals [1] and [2] due to
transportation vibration and their state may become [C] a condition which there is no contact of the
terminals. This results in the above mentioned symptom.

2. The above symptom occurs when the flat cable is broken.

2. The above symptom occurs when the flat cable is broken due to burr on the scanner unit or the
flat cable being attached diagonally.

SERVICING:
If the above mentioned symptom should occur, prepare a new type flat cable (FK3-3873-010) to
replace the old type.
If the above mentioned symptom should occur, prepare the new type flat cable set (FM1-H103-
010) and replace the old one.
[Note]
It is recommended to follow the steps below when replacing the flat cable to avoid damaging the
flat cable by accidentally folding it, etc.
[Reference]The new type Flat Cable Set (FM1-H103-010) contains the following parts:
- Flat cable
- Protective sheet
- Slip sheet (FL1-4605-000) *Newly set up as service part.

a) Remove the belt from the reader assembly

a-1) Remove the copyboard glass. Pull and move the timing belt [3] right and left to bring the
scanner unit [1] to the center.
[Note]
Try not to touch the 2 reader shafts [2] as much as possible as grease is applied on them.

N25-032-2

a-2) To protect the scanner unit and keep it from getting soiled, fold an A4 size sheet [a] in half
along the short side and place it under the scanner unit (top of the frame) as shown in the
picture below.

a-3) Loosen the screw [1] and slide the sheet metal [2] in the direction of the arrow [a] to loosen
the tensioner of the timing belt [3]. It is easier to perform the steps onwards by temporarily
attaching the screw [1] while the tensioner is loosened.

N25-032-2

a-4) Hold the scanner unit with your left hand as shown in the photo below. While lifting it
slightly, remove the timing belt with your right hand.

[Note]
While performing this work, be sure to keep the flat cable loose as shown in the photo [A] at all
times. Keeping the flat cable stretched out as shown in the photo [B] to prevent damage to the flat
cable.

a-5) Place the scanner unit [1] sideways as shown in the photo below on the sheet of paper which
was placed on the frame in the step a-2). When placing it sideways, pay attention to how the flat
cable [2] is twisted to avoid any damage to it.

N25-032-2

[Reference]
The scanner unit is placed in the center of the frame in the above instructions for better
workability, but it can also be placed on the reader glass [a] as instructed in the Service Manual.

a-6) Position the protective sheet[1], included in the flat cable set, by pressing it in vertical direction
against the reference line [a] on the scanner unit and against the reference line [b] in horizontal
direction, and attach it to the scanner unit.

[Note]
The areas marked [a] are the most sensitive areas against damage. When removing/installing the
flat cable, work with caution for both front and back sides.

b-2) Set the end of the flat cable [1] (the end that goes to the scanner unit) as shown in the photo
below. Then, place the cable retaining sheet [2].

N25-032-2

[Reference]
- Set the flat cable [1] so it goes directly under the 2 claws [a] of the scanner unit.

- There is a rib [1] located in the area [b] on the frame of the scanner unit. To reduce friction
between the flat cable and the rib [1], when installing the cable retaining sheet, place it with the [c]
area located between the 2 claws [a] of the scanner unit.

N25-032-2

b-3) Slide the cable retaining sheet [1] slightly with your finger to set it under the 4 claws.

b-4) Connect the flat cable [1] to the connector of the scanner unit.

b-5) Set the flat cable without removing the double-sided sheet attached to the folded section [a] of
the flat cable. Hold the flat cable temporarily with the clamp sheet [1] on the frame to avoid
the flat cable from being loose.

N25-032-2

[Note]
The flat cable is temporarily secured to avoid having the loose flat belt caught by the scanner when it
moves right and left in later steps.

c) Installing the belt in the reader assembly

c-1) Move the timing belt [2] to the rear with a flat head screwdriver [1], etc. to have it apart from
the reader shaft [3] for better workability.

c-2) While paying attention not to stretch the flat cable, lift the scanner unit with your left hand.

N25-032-2

c-3) Of the 2 timing belts running parallel to the shaft, hold the one located in front [1] with your
right hand and attach it to the mounting groove [a] on the scanner bushing.

c-4) Just as in step b-3), also attach the timing belt located in the rear [1] to the mounting groove.
For the timing belt in the rear [1], removing the belt first from the pulley [2] makes it easier
to attach the belt to the mounting groove.

c-5) Place the scanner unit on the shaft. Return the sheet metal slide in step a-3) under a).
Remove the belt from the reader assembly, apply some tension to the timing belt and tighten
the screw.

c-6) If the slip sheet [2] is not attached to the FFC guide sheet [1], prepare and attach the slip sheet
(FL1-4605-000) [2] along the following reference lines. When attaching the sheet, place the
scanner unit to the right side from the center.
- Reference line for attaching [a]: Align the slip sheet with the left side of the frame.
- Reference line for attaching [b]: Align the slip sheet with the rear edge of the FFC guide sheet
[3].

c-7) Position the flat cable [1] where folded in L-shape against the rib [a] of the size detection
sensor support mount.

c-8) Position the flat cable [2] in parallel to the FFC guide sheet(light blue)[1]. Be sure it does not go
outside the FFC guide sheet. Press the flat cable to the FFC guide sheet (light blue) so that the
margin between the FFC guide sheet and the flat cable ([A] and [B]) is within 1mm.

[Note]
The FFC guide sheet (light blue) [1] is attached on the black FFC guide sheet in the same shape. If
the FFC guide sheet (light blue) is not attached, position the flat cable in parallel to the black FFC
guide sheet just like the above and press while making sure it does not become diagonal.

[Reference]
Refer to the photo below for the position [A] and [B].
[A]: Downward in a vertical direction from the inside of the frame [a]
[B]: Downward in a vertical direction from the inside of the frame in the center between [b] and [c]

c-9) Remove the liner from the double-sided tape located on the backside of the flat cable where
folded and attach the double-sided tape.

[Note]
Be sure that the flat cable is straight against and is not loose from the FFC guide sheet.

c-10) With a scale, measure the margin [A] (as shown in the step c-8) on the friction sheet where the
flat cable is not layered.

N25-032-2

c-11) Same as the step c-10), measure the margin [B] on the friction sheet where the flat cable is
not layered.

c-12) Make sure that the difference of the values measured in the step c-10) and c-11) is within
1mm.

c-13) Attach the copyboard glass.
