Content Focus: Pythagorean Theorem

• In a triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse is equal to the

sum of the squares of the lengths of the legs.

Example:

A 37-foot ladder is leaning against a vertical wall. If the foot of the ladder is
12 feet from the wall, how high does the ladder reach? Include an illustration
in your solution.

Answer:
Given:
Hypotenuse (c) = 37 ft
Shorter Leg (b) = 12 ft
Vertical wall

Solution:
37 ft 𝑎 = √𝑐 2 − 𝑏2
𝑎 = √(37)2 − (12)2
𝑎 = √1369 − 144
𝑎 = √1225
𝑎 = 35
12 ft

Hence, the ladder reached 35 ft high

A game was being played in a rectangular soccer field that measures 80 feet
by 60 feet. There are four stations in which the tasks are to be completed.
The positions of the stations are indicated in the figure. Determine the
distance traveled by a player from the starting point to station 1, station 1 to
station 2, station 2 to station 3, station 3 to station 4 and station 4 to the
finishing point.
