Measuring Perimeter and

Circumference
The distance around a plane figure
is called its perimeter.

The perimeter of a plane figure can

be found by adding the lengths of
its sides.
The sum of the lengths of the
sides of a polygon is called the
perimeter (P) of the polygon.
A polygon is a closed figure whose
sides are segments.

A regular polygon is a polygon

having all sides congruent and all
angles congruent.
Examples of
regular
polygons and
irregular
polygons:
NAME OF NUMBER
POLYGON OF SIDES
Triangle 3
Quadrilateral 4
Pentagon 5
Hexagon 6
Heptagon 7
Octagon 8
Nonagon 9
Decagon 10
Example: Find the perimeter of 9 cm
5 cm
the polygon.
7 cm
Solution:
𝑃 =𝑠+𝑠+𝑠
𝑃 = 5 𝑐𝑚 + 7 𝑐𝑚 + 9 𝑐𝑚
𝑃 = 21 𝑐𝑚
Answer: 𝑃 = 21 𝑐𝑚
10 cm
Example: Find the perimeter of 8 cm
the polygon. 12 cm

10 cm

Solution:
𝑃 =𝑠+𝑠+𝑠+𝑠
𝑃 = 8 𝑐𝑚 + 10 𝑐𝑚 + 10 𝑐𝑚 + 12𝑐𝑚
𝑃 = 40 𝑐𝑚
Answer: 𝑃 = 40 𝑐𝑚
4 ft
4 ft
Example: Find the perimeter of 6 ft 8 ft
the polygon. 4 ft
10 ft

Solution:
𝑃 = 4 𝑓𝑡 + 6𝑓𝑡 + 4𝑓𝑡 + 4𝑓𝑡 + 8𝑓𝑡 + 10𝑓𝑡
𝑃 = 36 𝑓𝑡
Answer: 𝑃 = 36 𝑓𝑡
Formula of a Square:
• Perimeter of a Square with side (s):

𝑃 = 4𝑠

𝑠
Formula of a Rectangle:
• Perimeter of a Rectangle with length (l) and
width (w):

𝑃 = 2𝑙 + 2𝑤

𝑙
Example: Find the perimeter of
the polygon. 5m
10 m
Solution:
𝑃 = 2𝑙 + 2𝑤
𝑃 = 2 10 + 2(5)
𝑃 = 30 𝑚

Answer: 𝑃 = 30 𝑚
Example: Find the perimeter of a square
whose side measures 6 ft.
Solution:
𝑃 = 4𝑠
𝑃=4 6
𝑃 = 24 𝑓𝑡

Answer: 𝑃 = 24 𝑓𝑡
Example: Find the perimeter of a regular
octagon whose side measures 9 m.
Solution:
𝑃 = 8𝑠
𝑃=8 9
𝑃 = 72 𝑚

Answer: 𝑃 = 72 𝑚
TRY: Find the perimeter of the
polygon. 12 m
15 m
Solution:
𝑃 = 2𝑙 + 2𝑤
𝑃 = 2 15 + 2(12)
𝑃 = 54 𝑚

Answer: 𝑃 = 54 𝑚
TRY: Find the perimeter of the
polygon.
5.5 cm
Solution:
𝑃 =𝑠+𝑠+𝑠
𝑃 = 5.5 + 5.5 + 5.5
𝑃 = 16.5 𝑐𝑚

Answer: 𝑃 = 16.5 𝑐𝑚
4m

TRY: Find the perimeter of the 6m

4m

polygon. 4m 12m
6m 4m
4m
Solution:
𝑃 = 4𝑚 + 6𝑚 + 6𝑚 + 4𝑚 + 4𝑚 + 4𝑚 + 4𝑚 + 12𝑚
𝑃 = 44 𝑚

Answer: 𝑃 = 44 𝑚
TRY: Find the perimeter of a regular
decagon whose side measures 8 m.
Solution:
𝑃 = 10𝑠

𝑃=6 6
𝑃 = 36 𝑖𝑛𝑐ℎ𝑒𝑠

Answer: 𝑃 = 36 𝑖𝑛𝑐ℎ𝑒𝑠
Miguel glues a ribbon border around the edges of a 5-inch
by 8-inch picture to create a frame. What is the total
length of ribbon Miguel uses?
Solution:
