Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learner must
be able to:

Determine the perimeter of a polygon.

Identify the formula used to find the
perimeter of a shape.
Understand and explain what perimeter
of a shape is.
Introduction
The word Perimeter comes from two
greek words Peri and Metron.
'Peri' means around and 'Metron'
means measure.

 erimeter is the total distance of all

P
the sides of a closed plane figure.
Discussion:
Perimeter is the distance around the
outside of a shape.

Perimeter is found by adding

together the length of all a shape's
sides.
how to find the perimeter
of the polygons, Triangle,
Rectangle, and square using
formulas.
Triangle:

Perimeter = Sum of the

lengths of all sides
c b

Perimeter = a + b + c
a
example:
Find the perimeter of a triangle having the dimensions
u = 9 m, s = 10 m, t = 6 m.

Perimeter = Sum of the lengths of all its sides.

= u+s+t
= 9+10+6
= 25 m
Perimeter of the triangle = 25 m
Rectangle :

Perimeter =
length + length + l
breadth + breadth

P= 2l +2b b b
(where l - length,
b - breadth)
= 2( l + b)  l
example:

Find the perimeter of a rectangle having the

dimensions l= 18 km, b = 12 km
Perimeter = 2 ( l + b )
= 2 (18 + 12)
=22 × 30
= 60 km
Perimeter of the rectangle = 60 km
Square :
Perimeter = s
Sum of the lengths of all sides

P= s + s + s + s
s s
= 4 s ( 4 × length of a side )

s
example :

Find the perimeter of a square having sides of 10

cm.
Perimeter = 4 s ( 4 × length of a side )
= 4 × 10
= 40 cm
Perimeter of the square = 40 cm
