3D printing in the construction industry

As we know 3D printing is now taking most industries by storm due to its efficiency and accuracy Similar
to other industries previously spoken about in our blog the construction industry is now being majorly
influenced by the benefits of 3D printing. Not only because of how cost effective it is but there are many
more benefits to it. 3D Printing in the construction industry may mean actually using a 3d printer on the
building site or it might mean 3D printing different parts and materials in a factory and then using them
on the site. Throughout this blog post I will try to tackle all the different ways that 3D printing is used in
the construction industry.

There are many advantages and benefits to using 3D printing especially in the construction industry one
of the main advantage that stands out is the fact that there is little to no waste. According to
(O‘Malley,2020) A Whole 33% of the waste created by the united kingdom is created by the construction
industry. Therefore using 3D printing in the construction industry could basically eliminate all waste
created by the construction industry. Thee fact that there is much less waste used by companies would
then mean companies would then be able to save a lot more money as they are wasting a lot less
materials and resources. So this means 3D printing is extremely beneficial for the construction industry
as it is extremely efficient and cost effective.

As reported by (Flynt,2020) 3D printers will greatly decrease the injury risk for construction workers . it
is well known that a construction site is a pretty dangerous place and people able to eliminate these
health risks would greatly benefit a company and its employees. This is due to the fact that the 3D
printers need very little supervision in comparison to a building site. In Turn 3D printing in the
construction industry would mean that would not have to pay as much wages as they would be able to
use less staff. This would make the company a lot more profitable. Although 3D printing is extremely
beneficial on the other hand this would then make workers redundant.

According to (O ‘Malley ,2020) There are actually fully 3D printed houses, when making these houses it
the printer uses the filament technique where layers upon layers of material are stacked on top of each
other in order to create the final desired design (e.g. concrete or plastic). This is still very new in the
construction industry and is not yet widely used and is still very unique. The largest 3D printing ever built
is the dubai municipitality office building It is said to be 10 meters in height and it was erected in
December 2019.
