Q # 1: CLO1 [4+6]
a) A wind turbine with a 30-m rotor diameter is mounted with its hub at 50 m above a ground surface
that is characterized by shrubs and hedges. Estimate the ratio of specific power in the wind at the
highest point that a rotor blade tip reaches to the lowest point that it falls to.

b) Find the time at which sunrise (geometric and conventional) will occur in Boston (latitude 42.3°)
on July 1 (n = 182).Also find conventional sunset.
Q # 2: CLO2 [4+3+3]
a) Consider a p–n junction diode at 25° C with a reverse saturation current of 10−9 A. Find the
voltage drop across the diode when it is carrying the following:
i. no current (open-circuit voltage)
ii. 1A
iii. 10 A
b) Hydroelectric generation may approach 100% efficiency, whereas thermal power generation is
about 30 to 45%. Why is there such a difference?
c) List at least three benefits of hydropower generation to an electric power utility.

Q # 3: CLO3 [5+5]
a) Write down “Capacity Factors for PV Grid-Connected Systems”.
b) Define & sketch “stand-alone PV system with back-up generator and separate outputs for dc and
ac loads.

Q # 4: CLO3 [5+5]
a) What are the basic differences between tidal-range power plant and tidal-current power plant?
b) A 60-Hz, four-pole induction motor reaches its rated power when the slip is 4%. What is the rotor
speed at rated power?
