6 FORCE
(PULLEY SYSTEM)
PULLEY SYSTEM
A) A force pulling a mass over a pulley

A boy is pulling a bucket filled with sand.

When the object is stationary or moving

up with constant velocity, a = 0

Find the tension in the rope.

Fnet = ma
T – mg = ma
T – 3 (10) = 3(0)
T = 30 N
A boy is increasing force with
acceleration.

When the object is moving upward, T >

mg
When the object is moving downward T<
mg

Find the tension in the rope if a = 2m/s2

Fnet = ma
T – mg = ma
T – 3 (10) = 3(2)
T = 6 + 30
T = 36 N
B) A pulley with two masses
Two masses are connected to a 3 kg mass moves
rope which passes over a upwards, T > mg
frictionless pulley.
Fnet = ma
Find the tension in the rope and T – mg = ma
acceleration. T – 3 (10) = 3a …(ii)
When 5 kg mass is released,
(i) + (ii): 50 -30 = 8a
Mg > T
8a = 20
Fnet = ma
a = 2.5 m/s2
Mg – T = ma
50 – T = 5a …(i)
T – 30 = 3 x 2.5
T = 37.5 N
A weight is connected by a rope to Wooden block motion
a wooden block. to the right.
The weight is released. Find the
tension in the rope if friction = 5N Fnet = ma
T – 5= ma
2 kg mass move downward, T – 5= 3a …(ii)
Mg > T
Fnet = ma (i) + (ii): 20 - 5= 5a
Mg – T = ma 5a = 15
20 – T = 2a …(i) a = 3 m/s2

T–5=3x3
T = 14 N
