Assignment No. 1

Question No. 1:

a- Types of cement according to EN 197:

EN 197 defines and gives the specifications of 27 distinct common cement products
and their constituents; they are grouped into five main cement types, based on
composition (the requirements for the composition refer to the sum of all main and minor
additional constituents), the groups are:
- CEM I Portland cement;
- CEM II Portland-composite cement;
- CEM III Blast furnace cement;
- CEM IV Pozzolanic cement;
- CEM V Composite cement.

b-
1- CEM I 52.5N
CEM I: Portland cement.
52.5 N: Cement strength class 52.5 Normal strength development.

2- CEM II/A-LL 42.5 N

CEM II: Portland composite cement
‘A’ signifies low proportion of second constituent (6-20% in this case)
‘LL’ signifies limestone as the second main constituent (‘LL’ signifies high purity
limestone)
42.5 N: Cement strength class 42.5 Normal strength development.

Cement Type
CEM I 52.5N Portland cement

CEM II/A-LL 42.5 N Portland- limestone cement

CEM III/A 42.5 N Blast furnace cement

CEM IV/A- 32.5 N Pozzolanic cement

CEM V/A(S-V) 32.5N Composite cement

c- The components of hydration process are: Tr-calcium Aluminates C3A, Tri-
calcium Silicate C3S, Tetra calcium Aluminates Ferrite C4AF and Di-calcium
Silicate C2S.
Positives points of hydration are: helps in setting of cement paste, gives early
compressive strength 3days &7days and ultimate compressive strength starting from
28days. While the negative ones are that hydration produces voids and cracks which
lead reduce the durability.
