SOIL TEST REPORT
The construction of a three storeyed building structure for college in
the premises of the S.P college Srinagar- site is to be executed by the
R&B (unit – 2ND) Srinagar. Accordingly at the instance of the DGM unit
2ND R&B Srinagar, Sub-soil investigation have been carried out by the
QC Lab R&B (RAJBAGH) to ascertain the safe soil bearing capacity (SBC)
of the foundation soil in accordance with the standard procedure.
Standard penetration Test (SPT) have been conducted in the two bore
holes done at the site up to a depth of 8m probed by Auger Boring N-
values determined for each bore hole at 1.5m depth interval. The
samples collected in the split spoon sampler at various depths of
bore-holes done have been analyzed /examined in the QC Lab. R&B
(RAJBAGH) for texture, unit weight and the other soil engineering
parameters.
Soil type: Silt clay.
Degree of plasticity: Medium plastic.
Degree of cohesiveness: cohesive (MI Group of soil).

Safe Bearing Capacity of Soil

The safe bearing capacity of soil was found to be 4.0 T/m2 for the design of foundation.

About Column
RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) column is a structural member of RCC frame structured building.
It’s a vertical member which transfers loads from slab and beam directly to subsequently soil.

Construction of RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) Column involves following four stages of works:-
1. Column layout work.
2. Column reinforcement work.
3. Column formwork.
4. Pouring concrete into column.
1. Column layout work: -
In this stage of work the location of column are determined practically in field. It is done by laying rope
according to grids shown in the drawing and then mark the location of columns related to rope.
In drawing, column locations are shown related to grid-line with dimension. Practically, in field, ropes
are our grid-line. So we place columns related to rope-line by measuring dimensions shown in drawing.
2. Column Reinforcement work: -
After marking the column locations, we then start to place reinforcement as instructed in the
structural drawing.
This is normally described in the drawing like:-
C1-08 -25mm⌀ and stirrup - 20 mm⌀ @ 4″ c/c.
That means column C1 will have 08 numbers of 25 mm diameter bar as vertical bar and 20
mm diameter steel should be placed 4 inch center to center as stirrup.
There is a sheet in structural design which contains structural notes from structural designer. In that
drawing, we find the suggested lap length for column’s steel of different diameter bar and other
important notes.
3. Column formwork: -
In building, floor height is normally kept 10 feet. If the slab has beam then we have to pour concrete up
to beam bottom level. Suppose, beam height specified in drawing is 1′-6″. So, the casting height of our
column will be 8′-6″. And our formwork height will be 8′-6″. But one thing should be considered here is
that dropping concrete from above 5′ height isn’t suggested during pouring. Because it leads concrete
segregation. So we should make one-side of column formwork within 5 feet height range. After casting
5 feet of column, we just lift the short side up to full-casting height of column next day.
Another way to cast column without segregation is to keep a small window at 5 feet level of full-height
formwork. After casting up to that level, close the window and cast the rest of the column.
4. Pouring concrete into column: -
Casting column is easy. For small quantity of concrete volume we normally depend on machine-
mix concrete and for large concrete quantity we order ready-mix concrete. We usually suggest
machine-mix concrete. Because, if you use moving pump with ready-mix concrete and if you want
not to exceed 5 feet height range for dropping concrete that would be difficult.
If you don’t use moving pump, yet there are some problems. Suppose, you have decided to use
ready-mix concrete without pump. In that case, you have to manually unload concrete on job site
from ready-mix concrete truck and have to manually pour into column. That’ll take long time and
you’ll exceed initial setting time of concrete. As a result, concrete will lose its quality. So it is better
to cast column with machine-mix concrete.
CONCLUSION
With the development of the new technology and the methods of the construction, the need of Civil
Engineers is growing rapidly and I feel very fortunate that during my four years of Bachelor of
Technology in Civil Engineering, I got this opportunity to attend the training program. The different
kinds of situation with regards to the activities involved in construction are faced everyday and is gave
me an opportunity to understand that a Civil Engineer is faced with unique problems every day in the
field. The Training program helps a student develop his theoretical knowledge into practical ideas.
However, regardless of the duration of the training period, I am very happy to conclude my report
positively with the confidence that all those knowledge and ideas I acquired will help me in my future
career. I am very much optimistic with the training program which is strictly followed in our college. It
gives a platform for the student who has never come across the actual practical working in the field.
This gives us platform for making our basic and standards strong for future career. It is like the first
flight of the new bird or the first walk of a baby where we make mistake, stumble and it is the right
place to stand up again .
The training gives us confidence to work and face challenges, to participate in team work, to be creative
and know our duties and responsibilities as Civil Engineer.
Finally, I would like to offer my sincere gratitude to Civil Engineering Department of Maya Institute of
Technology and Management for guiding me to complete my work effectively.

we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand’’
