I. Introduction:
It is very important for a civil engineer to do a better internship from reputed company which
gives you experience of what actually is civil engineering and what civil engineers do in fields.
It implement theoretical concepts learnt at university in real life projects, your bookish
knowledge is only 5-10% but that is considerable and important too.
Similarly like you have to start studying from playschool and go step by step to higher classes.
When you do an internship from good core civil construction companies like Jihad Abou Sido
Company gives you the same feeling of a civil engineer.
These companies gives you various tasks, projects having deadlines gives you the true essence of
an engineer. So, it is must you do internship during or after graduation.

a) Importance of Internship:

You can spend years of studying, performing calculations for university assignments and making
hypothetical designs yet never grow as an engineer. In order to truly understand why calculations
are made, what is crucial for a design, how to deal with clients and their demands, you need to
spend some time at a company and see how these are handled in real life. Going out to learn the
real mean of engineer may be difficult since you don’t consider the financial aspect as much, nor
whether it is easy to fabricate and maintain, what are the material costs or if the client would be
satisfied with it and this is main problem. Moreover, it helps in making connections with other
professionals. Engineering is based entirely on teamwork, and during your internship you will
meet people active in all phases of a project.

b) Overview of the company:

Jihad abou sido company was founded in 2008 by Mr. Jihad abou sido. Since that time, it has
developed into a highly respected construction company which has enjoyed the trust and loyalty
of many new and repeat clients over the years.
Jihad abou sido company is a leader in providing value-added construction services to our clients
by creating a successful partnership with them throughout the construction process. Our pledge is
to establish lasting relationships with our clients by exceeding their expectations and gaining
their trust through exceptional performance by every member of the construction team.

c) Description of Project:
JihadAbouSido for construction carried out a project which is “Huda14”. The project is in
Sharhabil behind Houssam El Dine Hariri High school St. 204 (Bkosta). It is a Residential
project consist of four blocks (A,B,C and D) with a total built area of 2400 m2, parking at ground
floor range under the four blocks with area of 1600 m2, each block consist of three alike
residential floors and one roof floor, each floor consist of two apartments. Elevator exists in all
blocks. The employer, main consultant and main contractor is JihadAbouSido for construction
and the design is done by the company.

II. Site Work:

a) Steel work checking:

One of my responsibility as trainee and assistant for the site engineer was supervision on steel
work of slabs and checking details for slab mesh, main drop beams, embedded beams, columns,
and raft mesh and ensure that there is enough concrete cover at edges.

Figure 4: Slab reinforcement mesh

6
b) Formwork acceptance:
Formwork is a temporary structure. It is molds where concrete is poured into; it allows the
concrete to acquire its desired shape and size; it also controls the alignment and position. It
supports its own weight, the freshly poured concrete and the construction live loads. The
formwork must remain in place until the concrete is strong enough to carry its own weight.

Figure 5: Part of the slab formwork in the project

As an engineer, to accept the formwork done by the workers some checks should be done. To
check the slab formwork a laser leveling equipment known as a dumpy level, a water level may
be used, and a meter should be used. On the peripheral columns, a known level is marked. From
this marking, the height of the beam bottom is determined, and this is checked at various points.
However, to check the column formwork, a different procedure is done. Wires are tied from one
end to another. Then, the distance from the wire to the formwork at each end is measured. The
distances at each end should be equivalent to assure that the formwork is leveled.

7
c) Excavation, Backfilling and Compaction:
Construction should be done on rigid rock base.
That is why excavation was done to remove the
loose soil material. In excavation a machine named
“Poclain” was used. Figure 6 show the excavation
works on site.
In order to densify the material backfilled so it can
support the footings and slabs above without
causing future settlements and failure, compaction
was done. Using a heavy machine named as
vibrating wheeled roller a large force was exerted to Figure 6: Excavator
densify and compact the soil below. Compaction was
done on 3 phases, each phase compacts a layer of soil around 40 cm.

d) Casting Phase: (concrete pouring)

After finishing the formworks, the engineer requests the concrete ready mix plant to send a
specific amount of concrete with specific strength characteristics. The transportation duration for
concrete from the ready mix plant to the site was around 30 minutes. Once the mixer arrives,
slump test should be done and 3 cylinders should be taken. If the slump test is acceptable the
workers start pouring concrete.
Concrete was poured using two ways, a bucket or a pump. The bucket was used for pouring
concrete in vertical elements. However, a pump was used for slabs and rafts.Concrete should be
poured in phases and not once at a time.

Figure 7: Concrete Casting using Bucket & Pump

8
While concrete is poured in the slab mold, a vibrator should be used at the same time to ensure
the concrete flows around all the reinforcement rods. Vibration should be done for a short time to
avoid segregation. Then spreaders and screeds should be used. Spreaders are used to place
concrete as close as possible to finish level to facilitate screeding of concrete. Screeds are stiff
boards used to smooth and roughly level wet concrete shortly after it is poured. After that, floats
are used. It is used to smoothen the surface of concrete. Finally, curing of concrete takes place.
Curing is important for concrete’s strength development and durability.

e) Tests:

➢ Slump Test:
The concrete slump is done to check the workability and
flowability of a freshly made concrete. Also, it measures the ease
with which concrete flows. The acceptable slump was 18 cm in
this project.

Figure 8: Slump Test

➢ Compression Test:
The compression test measures concrete
strength in the hardened state. According
to the lab the company was working with,
on days 7, 14, and 28 the concrete must be
gained around 65%, 90% and 99% of its
desired strength respectively. For this test,
3 cylinders should be taken from every
mixer. Figure 9 shows the % of acquired
strength as a function of time.

Figure 9: Compression Test

9
➢ Dynamic Plate Test:
It is an on-site test that is done after compaction. It is a compaction
monitoring and a soil quality test that measure the modulus of
deformation (EVD). It is done by dropping a measured weight
vertically down a rod until it hits the center of a circular steel late.
After the test is completed the maximum displacement of the plate
is measured via an accelerometer housed in the plate. Figure 10
shows the EVD value.

III. Office work:

a) Shop Drawing:
A shop drawing is a set of drawings produced by the contracting company or a subcontracting
company. These drawings show more details than design drawings. It is normally drawn to
explain the installation of the items to the construction crew.
One of my tasks was to draw and edit these drawings and submit them to my supervisor. The
following figures show AutoCAD drawings for the shop drawings.

Figure 11: Basement Slab Steel Drawing (Parking)

10
➢ Steel Mesh:
Four drawings were done for the steel mesh for each slab or raft. The drawings show the specific
areas for steel bars installation, number of bars in each area, diameter of bars, length of bars and
the hook length. The drawings were done for the top steel and the bottom steel, each in two
different directions X and Y.

Figure 12: Block A Slab Steel Drawing Figure 13: Block B, C and D Post-tension Steel Drawing

➢ Dowels:
For the dowels one drawing was enough. This drawing shows the number of bars, the diameter
of the bars, the length of bars, the hook, and the details for the hook.

➢ Vertical Elements:
Walls and columns are the vertical elements that I was supposed to draw shop drawings for. I
was supposed to draw vertical and lateral sections. The drawings show details for the levels, the
spacing between steel bars, the number of steel bars and the diameters of the bars. Figures 13
show samples for columns lateral and vertical sections.

b) Bar Bending Schedule:
Bar bending schedule or schedule of bars is a list of reinforcement bars characteristics for a given
reinforced concrete work item. It is normally presented in a tabular form. It usually shows the bar
mark, bar diameter, number of bars, shape of the bar, length of bar, weight of bar, total length,
and total weight. In my case I was using the shop drawings to fill the data. This data was used to
request steel quantities from the supplier.

IV. Conclusion:
My internship gave me a great experience in construction field. It exposed me to the challenges
that a site engineer faces in his/her everyday career life. Also, it helped me in deciding whether
my career path will be in this field or not. Moreover, this internship allowed me to learn new
concepts and techniques in addition to the concepts I have learnt in the university.
I want to thank my Civil engineer department all starting by chairman and ending in by doctors I
have been so lucky to be taught by such qualified doctors. During my internship, many people
told me that technically I was better than other trainee coming from other universities all this
praise is result of their hard and dedicated work.
