What I Need to Know
For sure, you have used the word 'heat' many times in your life. You
have experienced it, and you have observed its effects. But have you ever
wondered what heat really is?
This module aims to reinforce your understanding of heat as energy
that transfers from one object or place to another. You will determine the
conditions necessary for heat transfer and the direction by which heat
transfers by examining the changes in the temperature of the objects involved.
You will also observe the different methods of heat transfer and investigate
some factors that affect these methods.
This module was designed and written in a way that suits your
understanding and needs. It is here to help you master heat transfer
concepts and infer the conditions necessary for heat transfer to occur.

What is It
Have you heard of the term thermal energy before? Objects possess
thermal energy due to the movement of their particles. Like any form of
energy, it can be transformed into other forms or transferred to other objects
or places. Heat, another form of energy, refers to thermal energy 'in transit'
or in the process of being transferred. It stops becoming heat when the
transfer stops.

Heat transfer is a phenomenon related to a change in temperature or


a change in the relative hotness or coldness of an object. Energy transfers
naturally flow from a body of higher temperature to a body of lower
temperature. There are three basic forms of heat transfer, namely radiation,
conduction, and convection.

Radiation
In Figure 1, the heat from
the sun travels by waves
through space towards the
Earth, which will absorb the
heat, so the Earth becomes
warm. This process is called
radiation. It is the transfer of

pass through. It travels in all directions from a hot object. The hotter an object
is, the more heat it will radiate out. Radiation travels in a straight line and
can travel in a vacuum. It does not need particles for it to travel.

Conduction
The particles or molecules of
substances in the solid state are
very close to each other. As the
molecules in one part of a solid are
heated, the heat travels to the
nearest object. These molecules, in
turn, transfer the heat to the next
molecules. This process is called
conduction. The transfer of heat is

anytime when objects of different
temperatures touch each other. As long as the objects are in contact, the
transfer of heat will continue until the temperature of the objects equalizes or
are the same. This is observed in Figure 2, where a metal spoon is left in a
pan of soup that is heating on the stove. The spoon is in direct contact with
the hot soup, and heat is transferred to the spoon.

Radiation
Another method of heat transfer is observed
when heating water, as illustrated in Figure 3.
The water at the bottom part of the container
gets heated first. When water is heated, it begins
to rise. Cold water is heavier than warm water.
As warm water rises, cold water goes down. The
process is repeated until all the water has the
same temperature. This process is called
convection. Convection happens depending on
the density of the material. For example, when

The denser masses of the gas or liquid move in to fill the space left by the
heated particles. The particles that move away from the source of heat become
cooler and denser.

Convection Current
The movement of air due to
heat is called a convection
current. Convection currents
rely on the constant cyclical
motion of air, water, and
other substances to
distribute heat. As heated air
rises, it pulls cooler air into
its place - where the latter

Activity 3: Warm Me Up, Cool Me Down!

Direction: Perform the activity using your sense of touch. You can use your fingers
or hands to feel the objects being observed. In this activity, you will describe the
condition necessary for heat transfer to take place and trace the direction in which
heat is transferred. Precaution: Be extra careful when using hot water.

Materials Needed:
 2 small drinking cups (glasses) as containers
 2 big containers (enough to accommodate the small containers)
 tap water
 hot water

Procedure:
1. Label the plastic cups 1 and 2 while
the big ice cream tubs A and B as
shown.
2. Half fill containers 1, 2, and A with
tap water while half fill container B
with hot water. Be careful when
you pour hot water into the
container.
3. Carefully place plastic cup 1 inside
tub A in Setup 1. Do the same with
plastic cup 2 and tub B as in Setup
2.
4. After some time, dip your fingers for
a while into plastic cups 1 and 2
and observe the relative temperature.

Activity Questions:
Q1. In which setup was there a change in the temperature of water in the plastic
cup? In which setup was there NO change in the temperature of the water inside
the containers?

The next activities will allow you to explore that heat travels by conduction
from hot to cool object, that heat travels by convection through liquid and gas, and
that heat travels by radiation through a gas. Precaution: Be careful when
dealing with fire.

Activity 4: Methods of Heat Transfer


Procedure 1:
1. Prepare a spoon, a small piece of cloth, a 1
candle, and matches.
2. Light the candle, then with a piece of cloth,
hold a spoon over the flame for five minutes.

B. In cooking, the stove burners conduct heat energy to the bottom of a frying
pan sitting on top of it. From there, the pan conducts heat to its contents. A frying
pan also uses conduction heating as the hot oil cooks the pancake when it comes in direct
contact with it.
