Part 2: Building Instructional Leadership
Reflect on what you learned from The Art of Questioning and Building Your
Questioning Skills resources.

1. Why is it important for teachers to use different types of questions?

It is important to use different types of questions because not all learners think the same way.
For example. If I ask my 3 year old to identify letters such as “which one is the F” she can pick
it out. But if I ask her what the F is called on a card, she sometimes struggles to come up with
that letter name. We have to meet our learners where they are and build on that connection.
The way we questions can also have an effect on students problem solving skills. We do not
want to release too much information right away and give the students the answer. We want
them to think of the work and connect the dots on their own.
In addition we should questions properly to identify misconceptions. The students will
naturally connect their prior experiences to the concepts. Sometimes these experiences may
not be the right route. This is the opportunity to address those misconeptions and move on to
new ideas.
The most challenging part of questioning is teaching the students how to collaborate together.
Especially now with virtual learning, this becomes even more of a challenge. This will
probably be one of the most important aspects of our new school year and making virtual
learning effective. The more the students are able to work together to solve problems, the
better and more effective the lessons will be.

2. What have you learned about questioning skills? What areas would you
like to strengthen?

Learning about the different categories of questions to help stimulate student learning is a
great resource. Not only does this help guide the students thinking, but it can potential bring
up new connections that were not thought of before. I have known a lot of about questioning
from previous courses, but connecting questioning to problem based learning is probably the
most crucial part of the PLTW model.
The areas that I would like to strengethen with regard to questioning are the following:
- I want to be able to predict misconception geared towards my students prior to
learning. This will allow me to put it into their ILP plans and make sure we are
successful at addressing weaknesses.
- I need to work on my patience when it comes to answering questions. Sometimes I

get too excited or ready to answer the questions right away. I need to let students
grapple with the information first.
- I am good at monitoring student data, but I want to become better at it. I want to be
able to analyze data well to look at overall class trends and predict future issues. I
want to find out what will make my group the most successful and provide them with
the resources.
- I want to help student question other students and help them learn how to ask
questions themselves.

3. How would you use the activity in Building Your Questioning Skills to
support classroom teachers?

I have filmed myself multiple times teaching already. I will use these sessions in the following
ways:
-Show them how I am not perfect and set goals myself.
-Have my PLC create goals and evaluate eachother.
-Create a collaoborative PLC to work on these goals.
-Google Classroom to work together to achieve these goals.
-Videos uploaded to comment on and get ideas.
-Using the curriculum in a new way.
