BYU-Idaho Preschool Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan #2
Lab A
Simple Machines
Date: Thursday June 20, 2019
Supervisor: Sister Eagar
Lead Teacher: Shayla Bates

Preassessment and Findings:

Tommy and Joseph were playing on the playground one of the days and they had found that the other class had put up a pulley system and
they were enthralled with the pulley. Joseph did not know what the pulley was and how it worked. But then Tommy attempted to explain to
both me and Joseph how the pulley. Worked.
Sofia on that same day joined students outside at the other lab’s wood working table. She found that she really likes to screw in the screws
and try out the different tools that the other lab had out. Brooklyn during the small focus groups while learning about worms that day was
very precise on where she put the leaves, sticks, and rocks in her worm habitat. Daniel on the day we explored sound he loved the bells that
was placed out in the dramatic play area. At one point he had them organized by tone level and in the order of the rainbow. One of Errisa’s
favorite things to do out side is play on the jump-a-roo she played off and on it for about 15 minutes pretending that the ground in the middle
of the jump-a-roo was lava and you could not touch the lava if you didn’t have special lava shoes. Wyatt when we had the house structure out
in the block area at one point said that “his” house was a mess because it had a lot of stuff in it. He then proceeded to state that I should help
him organize the house. He did most of the organizing. Ali and Brinlee had suggested that the next time that we had the showtime in the
dramatic play we should have a make up room. For the next time that it was put out later in the week we had made a dressing room. Ali and
Brinlee loved to play with the curling irons and when I told them that the curling iron is a type of machine that also had many little machines
that help make the big machine they did not believe me and thought that they were only one machine not a bunch of little machines put
together. Paxton played with the marble works for close to 20 minutes and he tried to communicate with Daniel. He has also conversed more
with the teachers and the other students instead of always echoing. Halliegh I found that if there is more for her to do and be actively engaged
for more than 2 minutes she will behave better and not be so quick to act out.

What do the Children KNOW about the proposed topic:

 They know that machines and tools have many uses.
 They can identify different types of tools and some of their uses.
 Some know how a pulley works to lift objects up into the air from a low place to a high place.

What do the Children NEED TO KNOW about the proposed topic:

 They did not know that big machines can be made of small machines.
 They did not know that there were such things called simple machines
Most do know how to explain how a machine like a lever or a pulley works or what they can be used for.

Children Receiving Specific Focus Today:
1. Tommy’s goal is to count to 20, he can at least count to 11. The math area is designed for Tommy where he will be able to compare number amounts
and count how many objects are on the scale.

2. Wyatt’s goal is to count to 20 or higher this can be achieved in the math area where he will be able to compare numbers and count how many objects
are on the scale.

3. Lorelei’s goal is to engage and work with other children while playing as a group. The block area is designed for her it will have house in the area as
long as the carboard blocks and the cats and dogs pet toys

4. Kelaria likes to use her fine motor skills but still has trouble strengthening them. Her goal is to practice using her fine motor skills and strengthen them.
This will be achieved in the art area where she will be given the opportunity add decorations to her pouring art using her fingers.

Ideas to be Emphasized and Overall Goals:

1. Simple machine, any of several devices with few or no moving parts that are used to modify motion and force in order to perform work.
2. Children will use gross and fine motor skills as they navigate through the activities
Research about Topic:
Simple machine, any of several devices with few or no moving parts that are used to modify motion and force in order to perform work.
There are 6 different kinds of simple machines they are the inclined plane, wheel and axle, screw, pulley, wedge, and lever. A lever is any thing like a rod or board that
can be placed slightly under something to lift it. The wheel and axle are used to make moving objects long distances.
And inclined plane is just a ramp which allows easy ways to move an object higher or lower.
The wedge is used to separate an object apart. This is needed to cut, tear or break something in two. A wedge can also be used to keep things together or secure things
from movement. The pulley is actually a version of a wheel and axle that is combined with a rope, chain or other cord to allow moving something up and down or back
and forth. It also helps to make work easier when lifting heavier objects.
The screw is really a twisted inclined plane. It allows movement from a lower position to a higher position but at the same time it moves it in a circle. That makes it take
up less horizontal space. A screw can also act to hold things together in some cases.
A compound machine is two or more simple machines that have been put together.

The basic purpose for which most simple machines are designed is to reduce the effort (force) required to perform a simple task. To achieve this, the force applied must
act over a longer distance or period of time resulting in the same amount of work being performed by a smaller force.
While simple machines may magnify or reduce the forces that can be applied to them, they do not change the total amount of work needed to perform the overall task.

Special instructions for the day: Teachers will need to supervise the art and the wood working table

Activity Name Description/Activity Objective Materials, Special Set-up

Creative Art: Pouring Activity Description: Children Will be using paint in a squeeze Scrap plywood (IWP)
art (#6) @1 bottle to pour over either a rock or a piece of scrap plywood. They Large Rocks (IWP)
can pour different colors on the wood or rock to make the colors Gallon Paint (RR1, Cabinet 1)
“mix” without stirring them up. They will also be given different 8 empty plastic water bottles (IWP)
types of decorations that they can set on the paint before it dries to Tarp (RR1, Pi 119)
further decorate the wood or rock more Set-up: Remove both of 6 (if possible) Racks (RR2, G 130)
the tables from the area (we will still use one of them to hold the 2 purple rags to wipe up paint globs off the floor.
paint and the decorations) and place a tarp down on the floor and 2 Sensory bins (GG)
tape in place. Put out the racks from the sensory area in the Paper plates (RR1)
sensory bins (First tape the bottom of the sensory bins to the tarp
to keep them from moving) on the tarp so that they can put the
rock or wood on it so the paint can drip off the sides. Place on the
table a variety of colors in paint. Fill the squeeze bottles all the
way with paint to ensure that there is enough paint for all the
children.
Child Objective: Children will use creative expression as they
pour the paint and decorate the rocks and wood. It gives them the
opportunity to complete creative projects. (IELG D1, G2)
Intentional Teaching: A teacher should be in or around this area
at all times in order to supervise the children so that they don’t get
paint everywhere and washes their hands afterwards. They should
also explain to the children if asked how to do the art project. This
activity was designed for Kelaria because she loves the art table
and her goal is to strengthen her fine motor skills. This activity
will challenge both fine and gross motor skills.
Math: Balancing counters Activity Description: children will balance counters on a scale Playdough
#4 and count how many are on each side they will also have Jumbo safari counters (RR2, R 160)
*This is exploring a lever playdough to use while in the math area. Scales ( RR2, R 151)
and a fulcrum Child Objective: Children will practice counting to 20 and learn
how to count higher
Intentional Teaching: Tommy stated that he loves to do math and
loves to count but he can only count to 11 and then gets mixed up
with the other numbers. His goal is to count to 20 so the counters
are to help them to get to at least 15 or 20 when counting.

Manipulatives: Creative Activity Description: Children will use the creative builder to Creative Builder (RR1, W 39)
Builder expand their imagination and make what ever they feel like
#4 making.
Child Objective: Children demonstrate strength and coordination
of small motor muscles (IELG, D2,G18)
Intentional Teaching: teachers will encourage the children to be
creative with the pieces in order to build something unique
Wood Working: Screws, Activity Description: Children will be exploring the simple Wood working table
and nails machine of screws. There will also be nails and hammers available 5 safety goggles
#4 @1 *exploring the to use. 4 screw drivers
simple machine of screws Set up: Place wood working table where the sensory table usually 4 hammers
goes. Place screws and nails in a bowl. Add the screw drivers, Screws
hammers, and safety goggles to the table. Nails
Child Objective: Children will demonstrate awareness and
understanding of Safety rules. (IELG, D2, G26)
Intentional Teaching: A Teacher should be there at all times to
make sure that the children are being safe while at the wood
working table. They should engage in conversation about how a
screw is a type of simple machine that hold things together and
move thing from lower to higher and moves in a circle.
Sensory Table: Pulleys Activity Description: Children will be playing with Ramps and Small sensory table
and ramps #4 pulleys in this area. Racing cars down the ramps and pouring the PVC pipes (large shed)
*exploring the simple pop corn kernels down to another bin Pulley on wheels (RR1, P 73)
machines of inclined Set up: Place the sensory table over in the corner near the curtain Plastic Rain gutters(RR1, P68)
plane and pulleys to the resource room. Put the art easel in the corner out of the way Popcorn Kernels (RR2, G131)
(you will still need it) place 2 sensory bins on either side of the Sensory table tools (RR2, G 121)
main table. Tape ramps to each side of the table leading into the Plastic cars (RR2, B 176)
bins on either side of the table. Attach a pulley and rope to the Dinosaur counters (RR2, R 149)
hook in the ceiling and tie a small bucket to the end of the rope.
Tape two ramps leading into to the table from the art easel
inclined enough that the cars or kernels can slide down the ramp,
but low enough that the children can easily reach them to pour
things into them.
Child Objective: Children will take turns or work together on
making the items go down the ramps. And explore how the
sensory materials affect the speed of the race cars.
Intentional Teaching: If teachers are in the area then teach the
children about how the ramps and pulley is a type of small
machine and how they make it easier to move things from high to
low or low to high.
Blocks: House Activity Description: Children will be playing house in the block Wooden House (gg)
#6 area Large Legos (RR2 B183)
Set up: place the wooden house from the gross garage in the Soft fabric blocks (RR2)

block area then add babies, blankets and some costumes into the 4 Babies (RR2, Y 230)
block area. Add the plastic pets and the soft fabric blocks in the Baby Clothing (RR2, Y 225)
house. Add the large legos to the block area. Place the table and Cameras (RR2, Y 227)
chairs in the block area right outside of the house, add dishes from Large Animal Pets (RR2, Y 177)
the closet to the table so that the children can “eat” Purses(RR2, Y 216)
Child Objective: Children will regulate their feelings and House (RR2, Y 251)
impulses (IELG D3, G38)
Intentional Teaching: This activity is designed for Lorelei
because she loves to play house and in the block area, her goal is
to play with the other children more instead of playing
independently.
Dramatic Play: Activity Description: Children will pretend that they live in a Check outstand (gg)
Old West town town that is set in the old west. There will be cowboy costumes Grocery store (RR2, Y 229)
and animal costumes for the children to play pretend. There will Meat (RR2,Y 228)
be a general store, post office, a stable, and bakery. They can also Bakery Treats (RR2,Y228)
pretend to stay at a hotel in the town. Grocery Baskets (RR2,Y233)
Set up: Take pieces of butcher paper and paint the words, hotel, 2 cash registers (RR2, Y218)
general store, post office, stable, and bakery making 5 signs in Grocery Store (RR2,Y 224)
total. Place the hotel sign on the wall in the loft area. Place the Fruit and veggies (RR2, Y 223)
post office sign on one side of the loft by the window, then place Bread and Dairy (RR2, Y 223)
the general store sign on the grocery store piece that holds the Animal Costumes (RR2, Y 259)
food. Place the bakery sign on the check out and tape the stable Cowboy (RR2,Y250)
sign to the stairs above the tunnel entrance to under the loft. Place 2 mail boxes (RR2,Y 253)
the grocery store part that holds food under the mirrors and place Post office (RR2, Y 253)
the corner stand by it with a cash register. In this area place the 3 Blankets (RR2, Y251)
fruit, veggies, and meat in here. Place the check out stand near the Horse costumes (RR2, Y 250)
piano and put the bread and sweat treats on top along with a cash Bakery (RR2, Y 248)
register. Add blankets to the loft for the hotel. Put the animal Grocery carts (small shed)
costumes under the loft in the “stable” Take one of the extra tables Butcher paper
and put it against the loft, add the mail boxes to the table and the Black paint (RR1)
post office items. Large paint brush (RR1, O 11)
Child Objective: Children participated in pretend or symbolic Tape
play (IELG,D1,G15)
Intentional Teaching: Children can learn math by counting
money out to each other. Literacy can come into play by being
able to attempt to read the signs and recognize letters. Also this is
designed for Wyatt because he is interested in cowboys.

the next part of gathering time.
2. Simple machines lesson Simple machines are all around us and we use them every day. Large pvc pipe (either from the large shed or from the gg)
and lever demonstration There are 6 different types of simple machines. There is the
inclined plane and pulley like we saw in the sensory area. Screws 3 of the wooden blocks from the block area
are also a type of machine they help us to hold things together to
keep a lid on. They also help us lift heavy things. Like a lever?
Do you think that I could lift this block shelf by my self with out a
machine? Lets try and find out. Nope I can’t lift the shelf by my
self ! but if I used one of my simple machines then I could lift the
Shelf up just a little bit. So I am going to use a lever to try and lift
it up. I am going to use this pvc pipe as my lever and these 3
wooden blocks as my fulcrum. The fulcrum is important because
if I just try to use the lever then it won’t be strong enough to lift
the shelf. The distance of the fulcrum to the end of the lever also
affects how high we can lift a heavy object. Alright lets try lifting
the shelf again but this time we will use the machine.
3. For small focus we will be making our own bouncy balls and Ingredients for the bouncy ball
Demonstrate how to make decorating a catapult to launch our ball. I am going to show you Blue towel
the bouncy ball how to make the ball before we go into our groups. First we are Tray
going to mix our cup that has water and cornstarch and a very very
very little bit of a special ingredient called borox that will help
make our ball bounce. Then we are going to mix the cup that has
the glue in it will a little bit of color paint in it. After that we are
going to add our first bowl with the water into the one with glue.
We are going to stir that together really good and then we are
going to take the gooey ball out and on of the teachers will help
your dry most of the water off and then we are going to roll it into
a ball using our hands and drying more water off of it if we need
to then it will make the ball
