5. FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

5.1. Rectifier module UNS 4680

The rectifier module UNS 4680 (-G01) is a fully controled three-phase rectifier bridge comprising
six thyristors (-V1 to -V6) which are cooled on both sides.
The module is available with two different thyristor types (see type designation section 2 and
technical data section 6. Further, the converter cubicle can be equipped with an isolator on
demand:

1. Cubicle version with isolator 2000A

2. Cubicle version without isolator
Firing of the thyristors is controlled by the CIN and GDI control boards which are directly mounted
inside the module:
CIN (UNS 0880a-P, Var.1): fan control and thyristor monitoring
GDI (UNS 0881a-P, Var.1): pulse amplifier circuit
High speed fuses (-F1 to -F6) equipped with fuse failure indicator switches are mounted in every
thyristor branch to protect the converter module against over currents resulting from internal or
external short circuits (for fuse data see tables on pages 10 and 11). The fuses are rated to the I2t
of the thyristors and not to the IdmN.

5.2. Overvoltage protection circuit (snubber circuit) UNS 4681

The overvoltage protection circuit UNS 4681 is used to protect the six thyristors in the rectifier
module against inadmissibly high over voltages. This circuit comprises the module -F01 with the
components (-V1 to -V6 and -C1), and a separate resistor (-R01).
In each of the three phases of this circuit there is a fuse (-F02) on the input side . These fuses are
also equipped with fuse failure switches.
In systems equipped with an isolator for on-line maintenance, the overvoltage protection circuit is
connected to the external side of the isolator (see circuit diagramm on page 7). This is due to the
fact, that thyristor redundancy and snubber redundany must be independent from each other. Work
on the snubber circuit may not be carried out when the system is energized, even when the isolator
is open.

Reductions for switching losses PvsN and for increased site altitude are neglected. In the
