SCHOOL OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES FOR ECONOMICS

BACHELOR’S DEGREE ACADEMIC PROGRAM

Field of Training: English Language Studies

Major: Business English

Course Outline

1. Units of Credit: 4

2. Time Allocation:
- Theory: 4 periods/week (45 minutes per section) in 12 weeks (48 periods in total)
- Practice LMS: 1 period/week (12 periods in total)
- Autonomous learning: Students are encouraged self-study while subject to the teacher’s
periodical assessment. The minimum time for self-study is 60 hours.

3. Performance Requirements: In order to pass this subject, students are required to:
1. Attendance: no more than 2 absences will be allowed. If you are absent more than 2
times, your participation grade will be reduced by 5%. Being significantly late or leaving
significantly early three times will count as one absence.
2. Complete homework and class assignments.
3. Course website use: Students should visit the course website at least once a week to
obtain relevant class announcements, supplements to lectures, outside resources and
access to communication with classmates and the instructor.
4. E-mail: You must check your campus e-mail account regularly.
5. Participation in class discussions and activities.
6. Satisfactory performance on a midterm and final

4. Class Participation
Studying for other classes during this time, not talking during discussions or activities,
audible off-topic discussions (keep side talk to a whisper), ringing cell phones, text
messaging, web surfing, e-mailing, frequent visits to the restroom, not paying attention to
directions during class activities: These are all excellent ways to lower my perception of the
level of your participation. Please note that listening attentively does not constitute effective
participation. Please note, too, that these behaviors are prohibited during class, and will
probably reduce my level of enthusiasm when I give full credit for your participation score.
5. Course Materials
Mackenzie I. (2010). English for Business Studies (3rd ed.). Cambridge University Press.

6. Learning Assessment Scheme:

- Class Attendance: 10%
- Class Participation on LMS: 10%
- Oral presentation: 20%
- Final Exam: 60%

7. Descriptions of assignments:
1. Practices on LMS
Students will need to complete all end-of-unit tests (eou) posted on LMS by the end of the
course in order to gain full credit for the participation part. There is no deadline for this;
however, I recommend that you should do practices every week. The format is based on the
final test so working on these practices seriously will help you do better on the final. You will
know your score (including false and correct answers) for each eou immediately on LMS.
This is a self-study section so I will not explain or work on these tests in class, so if you find
any parts difficult, please email me, I will explain in class when there is time.

2. Oral presentation
Students will do oral presentation on case studies. Students will work in group of 3-4 and
choose one case study from the “Oral Presentation.Topics” handout. Prepare an informative
handout on the case study (you can use PPT slides as your handout). Then give a 10-15
minute oral presentation on your case study on your assigned day. After the presentation,
there will be a Q&A section which each member will be asked one question related to the
topic of the case study by the instructor. Each group member must speak roughly the same
amount of time. Please find the “Oral Presentation.Topics” and “Oral Presentation.Rubrics”
handouts for a complete listing of exactly what information you should include in your
presentation. Your grade will be counted as two parts: oral presentation (80%) and peer
evaluation (20%)
