This year, OBCF awarded FOL
a $3,693 grant to help teachers
and our librarian replace
books lost during Hurricane
Dorian.
We were
recipients
of the
Dunlap
fund from
2004 -
2019. H.
Renwick
Dunlap Jr.
set up the
fund in
honor of his wife, Grey who
passed away in 2004. Both
were pilots and they often flew
their Cessna 180 to their
vacation home in Ocracoke.
Grey was a member of the first
graduating class of the Women
Airforce Service Pilots. She
was also a flight instructor,
and that’s how she met her
husband.
Their very generous yearly
contribution has provided the
bulk of the funds for our
library expansion project.
Ren Dunlap passed away in
2019. We are indebted to the
Dunlaps for such a generous
contribution to Ocracoke.
T��� Y��� FOL P�������
F���� ��� S������ F��:
▪ Books for Teachers. Through an emergency grant from the
Outer Banks Community Foundation, 15 teachers and our
librarian were able to replace some of their books lost during
the flooding of hurricane Dorian.
▪ Our temporary library at Deepwater Theater. This will be our
location through 2021. Thank you Deepwater for allowing
us to use your facility! The costs for staying at Deepwater have
been shared by Ocracoke Alive, Friends of the Library,
Beaufort, Hyde and Martin Regional Library System, and
occupancy tax funds. A true community endeavor!
▪ A new library sign for our temporary library at Deepwater
Theater.
▪ A revised, scaled back and Covid-safe six week summer
program for young people in grades K-4. (With help from
occupancy tax funds.)
▪ Book subscription programs, concentrating on building a
Spanish language book collection.
▪ Our soon-to-be fully restored and elevated library. Our
expansion plans that were in place before the hurricane will be
incorporated into the restoration project.
▪ The annual Christmas Cookie Swap. This year we concentrated
on reaching out to community members by donating cookie
containers to the Meals on Wheels program, the local Food
Pantry, and to essential service locations. A group of amazing
bakers donated their time and supplies to help us distribute
over 70 containers of cookies. Thank you to Meals on Wheels,
members of our Board, and the Ocracoke Food Pantry for
distributing Christmas cookies!
