PURPOSE OF MEDICATION

Expected Pharmacological Action Therapeutic Use


-Antagonizes Mu, kappa, and sigma -To treat known or suspected opioid
receptors in the CNS, thus reversing overdose
analgesia, hypotension, respiratory
depression and sedation caused by opioids.

Complications Medication Administration


CNS>Excitement, headache, irritability, nervousness I.V. or IM> 0.4 to 2mg repeated
CV>Cardiac arrest, hypertension, hypotension, VFib every 2 to 3minutes, as
GI>Constipation, nausea, vomiting needed. If no response after
Resp>Dyspnea, pulmonary edema 10mg, patient may not have
opioid-induced respiratory
depression.

Contraindications/Precautions
Hypersensitivity to Naloxone or its components.
Do not mix naloxone with any other solution unless you
verify that the drugs are compatible; drug is incompatible Nursing Interventions
with alkaline, bisulfate, and metabisulfite solutions. -Keep resuscitation equipment
redily availableduring naloxone
administration.
