ABSTRACT METHODOLOGY PMI CODE OF ETHICS AND PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT

Project management (PM) involves meeting requirements
that entail decision making. This process of decision making is
based on criteria and choices. Ethics is one of the bases for making
decisions. Therefore, all aspects of project management involve
ethical standards. Project teams in organizations employ codes of
conduct and ethical standards. The Project Management Institute
(PMI) that is a global and professional project management
association has presented ethical standards and guidelines in the
PMI Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. However, since
values and morals differ based on culture, the question of whether
ethical standards in project management differ from one country to
another arises. This study surveys ethical standards in project
management from organizations across different countries. This
study will analyze Codes of Conduct from culturally different
organizations to find similarities and differences in comparison to the
PMI Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. This study will help
answer the question of whether ethical standards in project
management differ from one country to another or are similar and
align with the PMI Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.
 Survey ethical standards in PM from organizations across different countries. PMI Code of Ethics and Conduct outline the following as the most important values in relation to project
management
 Analyze codes of ethics and conduct from culturally different organizations to find
similarities and differences.
 Responsibility
 Compare codes of ethics and conduct from different countries with PMI Code of Ethics  Respect
and Professional Conduct.  Fairness
 Answer the question of whether ethical standards in PM differ from one country to another  Honesty
or are similar and align with PMI Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.
 Answer the question of whether PMI needs to redefine PMI Code of Ethics and  Responsibility: “Duty to take ownership for the decisions we make or fail to make, the actions we take or fail to take,
Professional Conduct. and the consequences that result.”
 Respect: “Duty to show a high regard for ourselves, and the resources entrusted to us. Resources entrusted to us
may include people, money, reputation, the safety of others, and natural or environmental resources.”
 Fairness: “Duty to make decisions and act impartially and objectively. Conduct must be free from competing self-
interest, prejudice, and favoritism.”
 Honesty: “Duty to understand the truth and act in a truthful manner both in our communications and in our conduct.”

PROBLEM
PRELIMINARY RESULTS
 Values and morals differ based on culture, the question of
whether ethical standards in PM differ from one country to
another arises.
 An ethical common practice in one nation might be illegal in  Responsibility
other nations.  Honesty
 Respect
 As multinationals increase in the markets, the issue of  Fair, accurate, and timely information
distinguishing ethical from unethical becomes more complex.
 There are several issues that arise from these differences in
ethical standards around the world
 Honesty and ethical conduct
 Bribes  Conflicts of interest
 Gifts  Fair and timely closure
 Personal payments  Compliance with laws and regulations
 Accountability
 Clearances
 Reporting of illegal or unethical behavior

 Recording
 Assignments
 To explore the global universality of PMI Code of Ethics and  Waivers
Conduct.  Disclosure
 For both international and local partners to define globally  Approval and amendments
accepted ethical standards.
 To answer whether PMI should revise its Code of Ethics and  Responsibility
Conduct in order to meet global ethical standards.  Integrity
