enjoyment, relaxation and recreation, but also release
if tension and an incentive to a positive development
of character. In this module definition, its importance,
function and brief history of music will be discussed.
Also, the basic element of sound such as pitch,
dynamics and tone color will also be included in the
discussion. The activities are formulated in very simple way for your easy
understanding. Just enjoy and have fun.

What are you expected to learn?

This module is designed for you to:

1. Define and describe history of music
2. Explain the importance of music
3. Enumerate and explain the functions of music
4. Give and illustrate the different elements of sound such
pitch, dynamics and tone color.

What Does Music Mean To You?

People all around the world listen to music. It's something that brings us all
together through all of our differences. Music is something that we can all
connect, relate, and bond to. Music moves people and connects people in
ways that no other medium can. Music acts like a medicine. A bond over
music is a bond like no other. Music takes people out of themselves for a few
hours and that is what people connect to. People connect over the freedom
and love that is music.

I love music because it has always been there for me when I needed it. Music
says what I can't express and takes me to a place that I can't get to on my
own. Music lets you feel free and escape reality. Music makes things easier
and allows you to understand people better. Music is unique to everyone and
hits everyone differently. Twenty people could listen to the same song and the
way that each person takes it in could be completely different. Music to me is
what connects us and saves us.

Really, Music is my life, my world, my therapist, my recreation, my passion,

my companion, Music is what I am today.

Prople can and do use music as an aid to relaxation, to overcome powerful

emotions, to generate the right mood for going to a party, to stimulate concentration, in
short, to promote their well being. It has become a tool to be used to enhance our self
presentation and promote our development.
Before, music is not accessable to all people, they believe that music is for the
rich and educated people only. Others may feel awkward about going to classical music
events because they need to dress like a rich people inorder to enter the concert. Music
was not fair before, it's have been shielded from the public view.
I'm happy now because music can access by all people around the world. People who are
passionate about arts and music are free now to showcase their talent.
Students learn many important and necessary values for life as music enhances their
mind, their expressive ability, and a whole host of other qualities. Our society is becoming
more involved with the arts.
It can be therefore assumed that as a youth (or even an adult) music can influence
us in perceived negative and positive ways. The role that education takes is hugely
influential in steering these perceptions of the music we create, digest and champion. A
large part of the music we create is our journey within life that came before that moment.

The arts and classical music have been shielded from the public eye for far too long and
now that it has been uncovered bit by bit, there is a growing curiosity and even
excitement about this world. Artists and those who are passionate about the arts and
music must realize what is occurring and continue to showcase what is done in this world
to the public through various contemporary methods.

Now, the current government give us hope and we have seen evidence of its commitment;
but most importantly our American society needs to believe that everyone can find worth
and enjoyment in classical/concert music.

Music, as we know, sets a mood and a vibe as we hear it in lounges, bars, parties, or other
social events. Also, attending a concert is unique as it offers the excitement of hearing live
musicians while providing the sound as it is meant to be heard (if it is acoustic music that
is).

Concert music is the music that is not only pleasing to the ears and mind but also
nurturing for the soul. It has been long said that music gives one an emotional response.
Characters of varying degree that are found in music, can affect one’s mood. Music can
raise someone’s mood, get them excited, or make them calm and relaxed. Music also -
and this is important - allows us to feel nearly or possibly all emotions that we experience
in our lives.

How did Music Started?

Activity No. 3

Name the different eras of music and give the salient features of
each era.

Medieval (1150 – 1400)

Though we can assume that music began far before 1150, the Medieval period is the first
in which we can be sure as to how music sounded during this time. Most notated
manuscripts from the Medieval period came from the church or places connected to the
church, and so most pieces have a religious subject.

Renaissance (1400 – 1600)

The Renaissance brought significantly increased amounts of harmony and polyphony into
music, as most composers were focused on choral music.
The Renaissance was a golden age for choral composition, especially in a capella
compositions.
Religious music continued to flourish throughout the entire Renaissance period, including
new forms such as masses, anthems, psalms, and motets. Some composers of sacred
music began to adopt secular forms (such as the madrigal) towards the end of the period.

Baroque (1600 – 1750)

Expanding upon the end of the Renaissance period, the Baroque period saw the creation
of writing music in a particular key. However, the Baroque period is commonly known for
complex pieces and intricate harmonies. Still, this period laid the groundwork for the next
300 years of music.

Classical (1750 – 1820)

The term “Classical Music” has two meanings

The broader meaning includes all Western art music from the Medieval era to the 2000s.
The specific meaning refers to the music from the 1750s to the early 1820s.

The Classical period expanded upon the Baroque period, adding a majorly influential new
song form: the sonata. This period also saw the development of the concerto, symphony,
sonata, trio, and quartet.

Romantic (1820 – 1900)

Beethoven and Schubert bridged the gap between the Classical and Romantic periods of
music. Just as one might assume from the word “romantic,” this period took Classical
music and added overwhelming amounts of intensity and expression. As the period
developed, composers gradually let go of heavily structured pieces and gravitated
towards drama and emotion.

20th Century and 21st Century (1900 – Current)

20th Century and 21st Century can be broken down into even smaller periods.

Impressionist: 1890 – 1925

Expressionist: 1908 – 1950
Modern: 1890 – 1975
Postmodern: 1930 – present
Contemporary: 1945 – present
However, these sub-genres are normally lumped into one large category since there are so
many diverse and opposing styles.

The 20th and 21st centuries can only be described as free reign for composers.

Let’s Take note of this……

History of Music
Pre-Renaissance Music: The Evolution of Instruments and Theory

Prehistoric Music

The earliest forms of music were probably drum-based, percussion

instruments being the most readily available at the time (i.e. rocks,
sticks). These simplest of simple instruments are thought to have been
used in religious ceremonies as representations of animals. There was no
notation or writing of this kind of "music" and its sounds can only be
extrapolated from the music of (South) American Indians and African
natives who still adhere to some of the ancient religious practices.

As for the more advanced instruments, their evolution was slow and
steady. It is known that by 4000 BCE the Egyptians had created harps
and flutes, and by 3500 BCE lyres and double-reeded clarinets had been
developed.

In Denmark, by 2500 BCE an early form of the trumpet had been

developed. This trumpet is what is now known as a "natural trumpet." It
is valveless, and depends completely on manipulation of the lips to
change pitch.

One of the most popular instruments today was created in 1500 BCE by
the Hittites. I am talking about the guitar. This was a great step; the use
of frets to change the pitch of a vibrating string would lead to later
instruments such as the violin and harpsichord.

In 800 BCE the first recovered piece of recorded music was found. It was
written in cuneiform and was a religious hymn. It should be noted that
cuneiform is not a type of musical notation.

By 700 BCE there are records of songs that include vocals with
instrumentals. This added a whole new dimension to music:
accompaniment.

Music in Ancient Rome and Greece

Greece was the root of all Classical art, so it's no coincidence that
Classical music is rooted in Grecian innovations. In 600 BCE, famed
mathematician Pythagorus dissected music as a science and developed
the keystone of modern music: the octave scale. The importance of this
event is obvious. Music was a passion of the Greeks. With their surplus of
leisure time (thanks to slave labor) they were able to cultivate great
artistic skills. Trumpet competitions were common spectator events in
Greece by 400 BCE. It was in Greece that the first bricks in music theory's
foundation were layed. Aristotle wrote on music theory scientifically, and
brought about a method of notation in 350 BCE. The work of that genius
is still studied today.

The next significant step in music's evolution was by Boethius. In 521 CE

he brought the Greek system of notation to Western Europe, allowing the
musicians there to scribe accurately the folk songs of their lands.
Incidentally, it was Boethius who first wrote on the idea of the opera.

Music in the Middle Ages

Most of the music created after Rome fell was commissioned by the
church. The Catholic religion has a long history of involvement (for better
or worse) with the musical arts. In 600 CE Pope Gregory had the Schola
Cantarum built. This was the first music school in Europe.

Meanwhile in China, music was progressing also: it was reported that in

612 CE there were orchestras with hundreds of musicians performing for
the assorted dynasties. Although the specific music from this period in
China is unknown, the distinct style supposed to have developed there is
reflected even in recent orchestral Asiatic pieces.

In 650 CE a new system of writing music was developed using "neumes"

as a notation for groups of notes in music.

144 years after the Schola Cantarum was built, a singing school opened in
the Monastery of Fuda, fueling the interest in musical vocation. And by
790 CE, there were splinters of the Schola Cantarum in Paris, Cologne

and Metz. In 800 CE the great unifier Charlemagne had poems and
psalms set to music. In 850 CE Catholic musicians had a breakthrough by
inventing the church "modes." These modes would later metamorphose
into today's major and minor scales. In 855 CE, the first polyphonic (2
unrelated melodies/voices at once) piece was recorded, and by 1056 this
polyphonic style replaced Gregorian chants as the music of choice (even
after the Church made polyphonic music "illegal"; this ban was later
lifted). In 980 CE, the great tome Antiphononium Codex Montpellier was
scribed.

In 1000 CE Guido D'Arezzo made many improvements in music theory.

He first improved and reworked standard notation to be more user-
friendly by adding time signatures. Then he invented solfege. This is the
vocal note scale: do, re, mi, fa, so, la ,ti, do. This innovation has affected
almost every modern vocalist.

In 1100 CE, a new secular movement began. This separation of Church

from music was a straddling one, and soon this new "folk" music was
looked down upon as pagan and borderline blasphemous.

The Renaissance

On the dawn of the Renaissance in 1465 the printing press was first used
to print music. By using a press, a composer could organize his pieces
and profit from them with great ease. In 1490 Boethius's writings on
opera were republished in Italian.

With the onset of the Renaissance, the rules of music were about to
change drastically. This was the beginning of a new enlightened age that
would showcase some of the greatest musical minds ever produced.

The history of music at this point is best told by the styles that emerged

and the composers who lived after the Renaissance.

Do you know That……..

We can define a sound wave as a disturbance which travels through some
medium. Sound is the term to describe what is heard when
sound waves pass through a medium to the ear. All sounds are made
by vibrations of molecules through which the sound travels. For instance,
when a drum or a cymbal is struck, the object vibrates. These vibrations
make air molecules move. Sound waves move away from their sound
source (where they came from), traveling on the air molecules. When the
vibrating air molecules reach our ears, the eardrum vibrates, too. The
bones of the ear vibrate in the same way that of the object that started
the sound wave.
Sound is a mechanical vibration which travels through an elastic medium,
as a variation in the pressure exerted on the particles which comprise it
(Hewitt, 2015). Sound can be perceived as pleasant or unpleasant,

although the boundary that separates music and noise can be very thin
and subjective. Most unpleasant sounds are several noise types, and,
despite some elements and preferences, pleasant sounds are frequently
related to music (Hewitt, 2015).
One of the Properties of sound is Pitch.
Activity 5

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pc4DmKyCYxs
Identify the pitch of the following instruments:

What Is Pitch In Music?

Pitch is one of the most fundamental words in all of music.

Everything that deals with melody and harmony, scales and chords,
starts with pitch. But it is also sometimes misunderstood, and often
what we think of as pitch is different to its actual meaning. We might

13
Republic of the Philippines
BICOL STATE COLLEGE OF APPLIED SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGY
City of Naga

think of a note as sounding “higher” or “lower” than another note,

but what does that actually mean?

In this article, we’ll go through everything there is to know about

pitch. But first, just what is pitch in music?

Definition of Pitch

What actually happens when you play a note on an instrument?

Whether you pluck a piano key or strum a guitar string or blow into a
saxophone, that instrument produces a sound wave.

A sound wave is just vibrations of air molecules that go back and

forth, cre;ating a wave of pressure that travels from the instrument
(that produces the sound) and is picked up by our ears.

The main property of a sound wave is its frequency, which is just a

word for how fast the cycle of the wave is.

Pitch is then how the human ear hears and understands that
frequency.

This is all a bit technical and mathematical, but just know that pitch
is basically the frequency of a note. The higher the frequency, the
higher the pitch and vice versa, the lower the frequency, the lower
the pitch.

So, a note sounds “higher” or “lower” than another note if it has a

higher or lower frequency than that note.

You can easily see on a staff what notes are high-pitched and which
are lower, because they are literally written “higher” on the staff.

Here is an example of notes rising in pitch.

Notes rising in pitch

And the opposite is also true, the lower the note is written on a stave
the lower the pitch.

Here’s an example of notes descending in pitch.

Pitches on the Treble and Bass Staves

Each line of the staff represents a pitch. A pitch is the highness or lowness
of a sound. Pitches are given letter names from A through G. This is called
the "musical alphabet". The pitch names in the musical alphabet are:

A, B, C, D, E, F, and G.

After "G", the alphabet starts over again with the letter A. The lines and
spaces at the top of the staff are higher in pitch than the ones at the
bottom of the staff. Since the treble clef staff is always stacked on top of
the bass clef staff (look at a grand staff), you know that pitches on the
treble staff are higher than pitches on the bass staff.

Just like the line and space numbers start from the bottom of the staff,
the alphabet/pitch names also start from the bottom. The first line of the
treble staff is E. The next space is F--the next line G, the next space A,
the next line B, etc. They are in order of the musical alphabet.

An easy way to remember the pitches on a staff is to memorize the lines

and spaces. On the treble staff, the names of the spaces spell the
word FACE. It's easy to remember the treble staff lines if you memorize a
saying. The first letter of each word in the saying is the pitch name of a
line--Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge.

Another clue to memorizing the line names is to know that the treble clef
used to be called the "G" clef. You will notice, in the diagram below, the
similarities between the treble clef and the way the letter G used to be
written. Also notice that the treble clef "curl" circles the line named "G".

15
Republic of the Philippines

__________________________________________________________________________________________________

Like the treble clef, the bass clef was designed after a letter. It used to be
called the "F" clef. You will notice, in the diagram below, the similarities
between the bass clef and the way the letter F used to be written. Also
notice that the two dots of the clef sit in spaces directly above and below
the line named "F".

There is an easy way to memorize all the lines and spaces on the bass
staff. In the diagram below, you will find the two sayings that will help
you remember the names of the spaces and the lines.

The saying for memorizing spaces on the bass staff is All Cars Eat Gas.

The saying for the lines on the bass staff is Good Boys Do Fine Always.

Another property of sound and element of music is:

Dynamics

Tone Color
Activity 7
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tGEDgkZlC8
In music, timbre (/ˈtæmbər, ˈtɪm-/ TAM-bər, TIM-, French: [tɛ̃bʁ]), also
known as tone color or tone quality (from psychoacoustics), is the
perceived sound quality of a musical note, sound or tone. Timbre
distinguishes different types of sound production, such as choir voices and
musical instruments, such as string instruments, wind instruments, and
percussion instruments. It also enables listeners to distinguish different
instruments in the same category (e.g., an oboe and a clarinet, both
woodwind instruments).

Focal points:
Sound is a mechanical vibration which travels through an elastic medium,
as a variation in the pressure exerted on the particles which comprise it
(Hewitt, 2015). Sound can be perceived as pleasant or unpleasant,
although the boundary that separates music and noise can be very thin
and subjective. Most unpleasant sounds are several noise types, and,
despite some elements and preferences, pleasant sounds are frequently
related to music (Hewitt, 2015).
Pitch defines the location of a tone in relation to others, thus giving it a
sense of being high or low.
Dynamics means how quietly or loudly a piece of music should be played.

Dynamics are an important way of conveying the mood of a piece and

your use of dynamics is a marked element of your performance.

Tone Color

Tone color is the characteristic that allows us to distinguish the sound of

one instrument from another. Every instrument produces its own tone
color. For example, when you hear a clarinet and a guitar play the exact
same pitch, the tone color of each instrument allows you to tell the
difference between the sounds that you hear. Another name for tone color
is timbre (pronounced tam-ber).

Let’s Do this!

Submit a reflection paper on the topics discussed. Please guided

with the following questions:

1. Explain what music and how it affects your life.

Most of us loves music, during these uncertain times, music can help us cope
with the realities of life. Classical music has been known to elevate humans out of
worried moods and anger. Music is such a powerful tool in life and in worship. It can
affect your mood, gives your brain a workout, and can improve your overall quality of
life. It’s no wonder that musical #worship has such an amazing impact on hearts and
minds. Here are just some of the amazing things music can do in your life.
I need music in my life, I need music to uplift me to remind me of
happier times, years gone by and music is my number one pleasure to be able to
listen to such a endless variety of songs, be it country or pop. Music greatly effects
my life on a daily basis. Whenever I feel confused and unable to take any decisions
in my life. I plug in the earphones to listen. I listen to different kinds of music like
English songs, kpop songs and opm songs. Music is part of my life .She has been
helping me since my childhood like one of my dearest friends .When I feel very sad
she would advise me to fly with her enjoying soothing, melodious and loving
lullabies. When l have difficulties to sleep due to stress and other problems l would
ask her help . After a while l would be sleeping on her lap like a small child.
In general, Music for me is cheers me up, makes me feel good and brings
the positive attitude towards life. It always works for me, and i bet it works for
everyone else to. So keep calm, and listen to the music.

2. Give the functions and essence of music to ones’ life and society

Music is everywhere, It surrounds us. Many people loves music and many of
us cannot live without it. What makes music so important in our contemporary
society? What is the role, the function, and the position of music in our everyday
lives?
Music may play an important role in everyday life, even if sometimes it is
hardly listened to. It plays an important role in shaping society and identities. The
scope of music reaches far beyond the concert hall. It accompanies our traveling,
sports, shopping, and working activities. It speaks to us and silences us. It sways
and soothes us.
We could say it is just for pastime, but a lifestyle for others. If music wasn't around,
musicians wouldn't be able to write meaningful songs that showcased their emotions,
no matter the genre is applicable throughout every aspect of life, whether it be
through child development, consumer science, or the effect it has on emotions. From
the beginning of mankind there have been make shift instruments, the lullabies sung
to young children, and the dancing of tribes.

Music enables meanings to be shared, and promotes the development and

maintenance of individual, group, cultural and national identities. The development of
the electronic media in the latter part of the 20th Century revolutionized access to
and use of music in our everyday lives. We can turn on the radio, play a CD or tape,
or listen to music on video or TV with very little effort. This has not always been the
case. Prior to these developments, music was only accessible for most people if they
made it themselves or attended particular religious or social events.

3. Briefly describe the beginnings and development of music. How

does music contribute to cultural development?

Music have contributed to the development and understanding of culture, also

music plays an important role in culture by being entertaining. People listen to music
because it's exciting. It can affect a person's thoughts and feelings towards a
particular subject, but not ultimately change their mind, which is what makes it so
pleasurable. What else would put life in the world if music didn't? Music provides
background music for almost everything in a person's everyday life.
Example is emagining what television would be like without music. There would
be no catchy jingles to stupid commercials that would end up getting stuck in your
head for days and no theme songs to your favorite shows and also a movie without
sound would make you not want to watch it we may say it boring. Whether you think
so or not, a soundtrack to a movie makes a person emote to the screenplay more- it
makes you feel what the actors are feeling. That is what makes it so entertaining. If
there were no songs to a movie, you might as well just not watch it at all. And
another example is about our cellphone. How would you know when to pick up your
phone if you didn't hear it ring your favorite song? Because hearing that ring tone on
a phone provides a small source of entertainment, but also serves a very important
purpose. Music also allows us to establish a unique cultural identity, using the
sounds of unique instruments, genres and rhythms that make the unofficial anthems
that we all know and love. We can't imagine the world without genres like calypso, k-
pop and zydeco, or without instruments like guitar or ukulele.
Music is one of the few products of humanity which spans all three domains,
giving it a unique position within our culture and existence. This is a phenomenon so
fundamental to who we are, that it is inconceivable that we would have a world
without it.
