Solution of the questions
Activity
Solve the following questions:
1. What is an electromagnetic wave? Describe with your words.

An electromagnetic wave is produced by the interaction of an electric and

magnetic field. These waves do not need a material medium, they can
propagate in material mediums or in a vacuum; their speed is constant,
they are waves are transversal, that is, the direction of propagation is
diagonal to the direction of oscillation.

2. What are the parameters in an electromagnetic wave? Describe them with

your words.
The parameters that define a wave are:
 Amplitude (A): Maximum distance reached from n equilibrium point to
the crest or the valley.
 Frequency (f): number of cycles (oscillations) per second, measured in
hertz (Hz)
 Wavelength (ʎ): Distance between the crests of two consecutive waves,
measured in units of length (m)
 Propagation speed (v): Speed with which the wave travels.
 Wave number: is a frequency magnitude that shows the number of times
a wave oscillates in a unit of distance.

3. What is electrical permittivity 𝜺 and magnetic permeability 𝝁 of a medium?

 The electrical permittivity is a physical constant of a scalar nature,

which describes how much the materials are affected by an electric field,
it is determined by the storage capacity that the material has before the
use of an electric field so that the internal field is canceled momentarily.
 The Magnetic permeability is the ability of materials to create
magnetic fields.

4. From the following wave equation:

𝟐𝝅
𝑬𝒚 (𝒙, 𝒕) = 𝑨 𝒔𝒆𝒏(𝒘𝒕 − 𝒌𝒙)𝒋̂ = 𝑨 𝒔𝒆𝒏 (𝟐𝝅𝒇𝒕 − 𝒙) 𝒋̂ = 𝑪𝟏 𝒔𝒆𝒏(𝑪𝟐 𝒕 − 𝑪𝟑 𝒙)𝒋̂
𝝀
𝟐𝝅
𝑬𝒚 (𝒙, 𝒕) = 𝑨 𝒔𝒆𝒏(𝒘𝒕 − 𝒌𝒙)𝒋̂ = 𝑨 𝒔𝒆𝒏 (𝟐𝝅𝒇𝒕 − 𝒙) 𝒋̂ = 𝟖 𝒔𝒆𝒏(𝟓𝒕 − 𝟒𝒙)𝒋̂
𝝀

where 𝑪𝟏 , 𝑪𝟐 and 𝑪𝟑 correspond to the last 3 digits of your identification.

Notice that in the equation:

𝑨 = 𝑪𝟏
𝑨=𝟖

𝒘 = 𝟐𝝅𝒇 = 𝑪𝟐 𝒙𝟏𝟎𝟑
𝒘 = 𝟐𝝅𝒇 = 𝟓𝒙𝟏𝟎𝟑

𝟐𝝅
𝒌= = 𝑪𝟑
