The lungs are respiration (breathing) organs associated with the respiratory
and circulation system (blood circulation) in the body of a vertebrate that
breathes with air. Its function is to exchange oxygen from the air with carbon
dioxide from the blood.
The lungs are located in the chest cavity (mediastinum), protected by the
structure of the collarbone. The chest cavity and abdomen are limited by
dividers called diaphragms. The membrane covering the lungs is called the
pleura. The right lung has three different parts (lobes). Whereas the left lung
has two lobes. The right lung weighs around 620 grams, while the left lung is
about 560 grams.
The human lung consists of several parts, each of which has a specific role,
namely:
First, the bronchi.
The bronchi are branches of the trachea that are connected to the left and
right lungs. The left bronchi enter the left lung, and the right bronchi enter the
right lung. The main function of the bronchi is as the air passages from the
mouth and trachea.
Second, bronchioles.
Bronchioles are branches of the bronchi. Bronchioles are very small, like hair,
and are numerous.
Third, alveoli and alveoli.
At the tip of the bronchioles, there is an alveoli which is a collection of air sacs.
Each air bag, called the alveoli, and its size is very small. However, the number
of alveoli is very much, which is about 600 million.
Fourth, pleura.
The pleura is a thin protective membrane of the lungs and inner skeleton,
which faces the lungs.
Fifth, the diaphragm.
Diaphragm is a breathing muscle that is located under the lungs and separates
the chest area from the stomach.
The function of the lungs for humans:
1. Protect the heart
2. Adjust the pH balance
3. As a filter
4. As a reservoir of blood
5. Protect the body from infection
6. Helps articulation of speech
7. Smoothing mucociliary functions
Types of lung disease:
1. Pneumonia
2. Tuberculosis
3. Bronchitis
4. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
5. Asthma
