The digital media platform that I have chosen is QUIZIZZ and I created a lesson about place value for third grade students. QUIZIZZ is an online learning platform that allows teachers and students to engage in lessons at the same time. It is a unique technology because it uses both, powerpoint slides and gamified quiz questions to keep students engaged. The goals that I target in my lesson are aligned with the QEP because I focus on competency 2 and competency 3. Competency 2 develops reasoning using mathematical concepts and processes. To pursue this competency, I teach the concept of place value throughout my presentation and I integrate activities to keep my students interested in learning. Competency 3 develops communication by using mathematical language. To develop this competency, I made sure to highlight important mathematical vocabulary throughout my presentation. My presentation consists of informative content, polls, multiple choice, and true or false questions. Students are given the opportunity to log in with a fictitious name which means that all answers are anonymous throughout the presentation. This may motivate students to participate because they will not feel singled out if they get an answer wrong. I also chose this technology because it is accessible to all students. It is something that is strictly done in the classroom, where students will have access to a computer. Considering the socio-economic status of my students, this ensures that everyone will have the technology available at the appropriate time. Furthermore, the lesson that I created is differentiated because I offer a choice of worksheets that can be completed for all different types of students. Their math duotangs would already be prepared in advance which means that they can follow my instructions without having to feel embarrassed about their current level of academics. If they are comfortable moving on, they complete one worksheet and if they still need more practice then they would complete a different worksheet. This emphasizes the deconstruction of power and privilege for the benefit of learning because the students are in charge of the pace at which they are learning. My presentation also has many benefits for visual learners, auditory learners, and kinesthetic learners. I have used this technology in the past and I find it to be very effective. Students are eager to answer the questions, and they do not know when the questions will show up. Therefore, students are actively paying attention throughout the whole presentation and this converts them into active learners. I have connected my digital media platform to the SAMR Model that we have discussed in class. I classified my QUIZIZZ presentation under both augmentation and modification. As we have discussed, augmentation refers to a technology that is used as a tool substitute, with functional improvement. Here, students are engaging in a live lesson that they can follow along on their own device. Instead of sitting and listening to the teacher present a lecture, they are actively involved. We have also discussed modification which refers to a technology that allows for significant task redesign. I have connected this to my presentation because students are answering questions about the topic. Instead of using traditional methods like tests and quizzes, students are using this online platform in a fun and competitive way.
