Activity #1: Why do you think that Evidence-Based Practice is important in Health Education?

Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) is important because it aims to provide the most effective care
possible in order to improve patient outcomes. Patients expect the best possible care based on the best
available evidence, and it is the responsibility of health professionals to provide it. EBP encourages health
professionals to have an inquisitive mindset and asks, "Why am I doing this this way?" Is there any
evidence that can help me do this more efficiently? Part of providing a professional service of a health
professional is ensuring that practice is informed by the best available evidence. EBP also helps to ensure
that finite health resources are wisely allocated and that relevant evidence is considered when making
funding decisions for health services. One of the Goals of Evidence Based Practice stated that it reduces
the variations in nursing care and assist with efficient and effective decision making and I think it means
that EBP in decision-making employs relevant data to explain why a particular decision is being made.
By revealing risks that can be mitigated with actions taken during decision implementation, better
evidence will help increase the likelihood of meeting decision goals. EBP is important for us students
who are still learning to become complete health professionals because it teaches us the importance of
using research to make informed clinical decisions. Patients' health may be jeopardized if EBP is not used
in nursing and I think that is why Evidence-Based Practice is important in Health Education and in Health
Care.

Activity #2: Choose one (1) ethical principle then site a hospital situation wherein you can apply
such principle.

1.Autonomy
Ymar’s health is deteriorating and his prostate cancer has spread to his bones despite surgery,
chemotherapy, radiation, and hormonal treatments. He's often accompanied by his wife Zia and one or
both of his two children, Deon and Dior, when he's been in and out of the hospital for four months or
visiting the clinic for lab tests and treatments. Ymar’s family has remained upbeat, confident, and
supportive, knowing that he would seek aggressive treatment. Ymar’s doctors, on the other hand, now
want to transition his care and include hospice and palliative care in his treatment.
Dr. Daclan, a palliative care physician, meets Ymar alone to discuss his end-of-life wishes and he
is adamant about pursuing aggressive acute prostate cancer treatment, but he also appears exhausted. As
Dr. Daclan continues to describe what aggressive acute care entails over the coming months and probes
deeper into Ymar’s goals of care, Ymar gradually admits that he is concerned about aggressive treatment
and said that it isn't what he wants, and adds, "I'm not the hero type." He goes on to say that he values his
independence above all else and that he is afraid of pain, suffering, impending loss of function, and the
money that would cost in his treatment. He finally admits that aggressive acute care seems excessive and
futile at this point, but he doesn't want to disappoint his family by not “fighting” and he is concerned that
his family perceives hospice and palliative care as surrendering and "giving up."
Dr. Daclan has suspected that Ymar’s wishes differed from those of his family, and she is unsure
how to acknowledge this and advocate for Dave without causing division. Ymar ask Dr. Daclan to tell his
true situation on his family because he may not take it seeing his family cry in front of him and Ymar ask
a favor to keep his wishes a secret for now and tell once his gone. Dr. Daclan respected his decision and
told everything that his family need to know.

Activity #3. As a nurse, aside from providing competent health care to your clients, how can you
fulfil your role as an Educator?

As I read the module in lesson 3: Role of the nurse as a health educator it says that “nurses as
educators play a key role in improving the health of the nation and providing competent health care to
clients”. I am not yet a nurse, but in order to fulfill my role as a nurse, I must have a solid foundation in
the principles of teaching and learning, regardless of whether the audience consists of patients, family
members, nursing students, nursing staff, or other agency personnel. Instead of waiting for the teachable
moment to happen, I should focus on promoting learning and providing a learning environment to create
the teachable moment. My role as a patient and family educator, nursing staff educator, and student
educator should be based on a partnership philosophy that based on integrity, open communication, and
mutual respect. When we get our license, we are all expected to teach so for the preparation I should
study more to gain knowledge and skills to carry out the role as educator with efficiency and
effectiveness.

Learning Activity

1. Not only in Nursing or Health Education, why do you think there is a need for Evidence-Based
Practice?
Sometimes, it’s hard to decide specially if we don’t have any evidence or basis for our
decision. For example, you are taking a quiz and it is a situational problem. You can’t easily just
answer that without any basis to decide what’s your answer is going to be that’s why I think there
is a need for Evidence-Based Practice not just in Nursing or Health Education but for everyone
because it can help us in our daily lives specially in decision making.

2. Why is the Nurse Code of Ethics is important to nurses in carrying out their roles and
responsibilities to the public?
The Nurse Code of Ethics is important to nurses in carrying out their roles and
responsibilities to the public because the Code of Ethics serves as a guide for those considering a
career in nursing. It serves as a non-negotiable ethical standard for nurses. It also serves as a
reminder of the importance of nurses in society. The code mandates that nurses continue to learn
and practice evidence-based practice.

3. Kindly elaborate this statement “The secret of national health lies in the homes of the people”.

This statement “The secret of national health lies in the homes of people” came from
Florence Nightingale. For me, I think it’s all about family. Wherever we go we always come
back to our home and that is our family. The family provides an outlet for tension release during
emotional upheaval, worry, anxiety, and economic insecurity and as a result, the family plays an
important role in both health and disease, in the prevention and treatment of individual illnesses,
in the care of children and dependent adults and in the development of adult and child
personalities. When we are young our parents teach us about health about what should we avoid
to eat or not and many more about health and illness. Our parents are our first teacher in life, they
may not teach us how to solve a trigonometry or how to make a F-DAR and NCP but they teach
us life lessons they keep teaching us until we grow and independent and look for own health. For
me, family is the most important group because it influences us on everything the way we act, the
way we live and the way we think on our health.
