Module 3 Lesson 2 Activity 1

1. Why is it important to respect cultural differences?

- To reduce health inequities, cultural respect is essential. It contributes to increased access

to high-quality health care that is sensitive to and responsive to the requirements of a wide
range of patients. Cultural respect, when designed and implemented as a framework,
enables institutions, agencies, and groups of professionals to successfully comprehend the
requirements of groups seeking health information and care. It contributes to the creation of
a healthy environment in which patients feel cared for as individuals, and members of health
care teams are engaged, collaborative, and committed to service, as well as displaying
greater resilience. In today's world, if we can all appreciate and learn about various cultures,
as well as their values and beliefs, life will be a lot easier for most of us, and we will be able
to learn a lot from one another.

2. How does culture affect public health?

- Culture has a huge impact on health, affecting people's conceptions of health, illness, and
mortality, as well as their ideas about disease origins, health promotion strategies, how
illness and pain are experienced and expressed, where patients seek care, and the sorts of
therapy they prefer. Because of diverse social ideas, but also because of biological reasons,
culture has a considerable impact on both diagnoses and treatment options. Another culture
that influences public health is the use of direct versus indirect communication, and making
or avoiding eye contact can be considered disrespectful or polite depending on the culture.
Moreover, because of their culture, some patients refuse to take preventative or health-
promoting procedures (e.g., immunizations, prenatal care, birth control, screening tests).
Furthermore, some ethnic groups place a high value on prescription medication and modern
therapies, and they are more likely to follow their drugs exactly as recommended, even if
they may question the need for the medication and stop taking it early. One of the most
important cultural factors is how a patient reacts physically to medication. Some people may
not metabolize the medication properly, producing serious issues in therapy, and patients, in
general, handle a larger variety of medications than those in other cultures.
