What are emotions and moods
Affect:
A generic term that encompasses both
emotions and moods.
Emotions:
Intense feelings that are directed at
someone or something.
Moods:
Feelings that tend to be less intense than
emotions and often lack a contextual
stimulus.
Types of Emotions

Felt:
The individual’s actual emotions:
Displayed:
Required or appropriate emotions:
• Surface Acting: Displaying appropriately but not feeling those
emotions internally.
• Deep Acting: Changing internal feelings to match display rules very
stressful.
Basic Moods
Emotions cannot be neutral

Positive mood:
Affect refers to the extent to which an individual
subjectively experiences positive moods such as joy, interest.

Negative mood: 
Is usually the result of irrational thinking about people or
events. This could mean focusing on the negative and not seeing the
positive in your life.
Sources of Emotions and Moods

Personality:
Predisposes people to experience certain moods and emotions.
Affect intensity affects the strength of the emotion.

Day of week and Time of day: More positive interactions will likely occur
from mid-morning onwards and also later in the week.
Weather: Not an impact according to research.
Stress: Increased stress worsens moods .
Social Activities: Usually increase positive mood and have little effect on
negative mood

Sleep less sleep or poor quality sleep increases negative emotions Age:
older people experience negative emotions less frequently

Exercise: Enhance Positive moods

Gender: Women show greater emotional expression, experience emotions


more intensely and display more frequent expressions of emotions

• By enhancing emotional intelligence in your organization, employees will


gain an increased awareness of their own emotions which leads to the
ability to better manage their emotions, decision making process, and
influence others. Emotional intelligence, emotional quotient and emotional
intelligence quotient, is the capability of individuals to recognize their own
emotions and those of others, discern between different feelings .

• Self-awareness: The ability to recognize your emotions and their impact while
using gut feelings to guide your decisions.

• Self-management: The ability to control your emotions and behavior and


adapt to changing circumstances.

• Social awareness: The ability to sense, understand, and react to the emotions
of others and to feel comfortable socially

• Relationship management: The ability to inspire, influence, and connect to


others and to manage conflict.
