English 4 Unit 9 Grammar: Used to

We use (used to) when we refer to things in the past which are no longer
true.

Ex. He used to play football for the local team, but he’s too old now.

Rules:

We use used to +base form of the verb to talk about the past.

Ex. My father used to build cars, but now he is retired from his job.

Used to -also shows a contrast between past and present.

Ex. The company used to publish travel books now they publish cookbooks.

In questions and negative sentences we use:

Did/ didn’t + use to

We didn’t use to fight like this.

She didn’t use to sing so well, did she?

Did people use to see pictures of distant places?

Unit 9 Grammar: Passive Voice in the Past

Because the passive voice is not a tense, it can be used in combination with
other tenses to talk about different time periods. The past passive voice is
used for events that took place before the present.

Structure of the Passive Voice in the Past:

Subject +be+ past participle +by agent

Was/were

Subject + be + past participle + by agent

+ A letter was written by Rita.

+The family’s clothes were made by my grandfather.

-I was not told about the meeting.

? Were the x-rays taken?

?When was the pizza delivered?
