HARD TO SUMMARY (maximum of seven [7] sentences)

IMAGINE This is all about well-known translator at that time, Leon Ma. Guerrero that
By Benedict translated the famous work of Rizal which Noli Me Tangere and El
Anderson Filibusterismo. During that time, he was ambassador to the court of St. James,
whose translations were prized among many. Due low cash prize he did not
submit his work and give it to Manila Times for publication. Afterwards, it
became “The only translation anybody reads now”. Through analyzing word-for
word, his translation is distorted in interesting ways to make the novel palatable
to the new generation of Filipinos.

How does it develop and/or promote nationalism to you?

Since Americans consider Dr. Jose Rizal as our Philippine National Hero, the
works of Rizal became our pride as Filipinos. Leon Ma. Guerrero believed that
the writing style of Rizal is not that palatable to the new generation of English-
speaking Filipinos then making it appealing to modern ear is his solution to raise
our flag. This distortion is an attempt in his style that raise our nationalism
because it became more interesting to the readers even in other countries. Today,
Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo is also taught or read in foreign
countries. Therefore, although it was not that right to distort the work of Rizal,
he distorted it for gaining more audience. This promotes nationalism to me when
Leon Ma. Guerrero distorted the famous works of Rizal to promote our country
with overflowing pride.
How does it develop and/or promote patriotism to you?
Leon ma. Guerrero showed his love and devotion for his country by putting a lot
of effort in translating the works of Rizal that developed my patriotism.
Translating is very hard. You need to read the book over and over, understand,
analyze, and interpret the text within the author’s work because as you read it
you will see things that you might not consider. The perseverance of Leon
showed through his translation makes us appreciate the freedom that we had as
of today. Through his love on what he has done and on our country itself we
were able to fully understand what Rizal is thinking at that time which is the key
on knowing how to be a true Filipino who embodies patriotism.

How does it develop and/or promote volunteerism to you?

At that time, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo are both novels that are
inaccessible. During translation, Leon Ma. Guerrero had to work with what they
had. It is mentioned also that his translation was prized among many since he
was an ambassador to the court of St. James. Considering all that facts it
promotes volunteerism to me when he did not submit his work and give it to
Manila Times for publication due to low cash prize. In addition, this action
enables the Filipinos to fully show our love and devotion for our country and
appreciate the freedom that we are experiencing because Rizal’s work became
more accessible through the only translation made by Leon that anybody reads
now.

THE SUMMARY (maximum of seven [7] sentences)
INTRODUCTION The Introduction written by Caroline Hau generally tackles the Rizal bill. Rizal
By Caroline Hau is well-known but his life was largely unread. This is when Rizal bill was
introduced which aims to give appreciation to the life of Dr. Jose Rizal and
analyze his works. As this was introduced the debate begins. Rizal’s work was
criticized, and they defended that Rizal’s actions and novels should stay in the
past because it talks about the past. His novels were criticized by the Catholics
because it shows anti-clericalism and has dangerous and sensitive criticism about
church.

How does it develop and/or promote nationalism to you?

Rizal Bill triggered the Catholics because in their perspective it is an attack on
the clergy and its object is to put ridicule the Catholic faith because the works of
Rizal’s contains more passages devoted to anti-Catholic attacks rather than
patriotic passages. Since Filipinos are very sensitive about this topic and very
religion centered type of people debating against Catholics is very though. After
long debate, this view and perspective was ignored which shows nationalism
wherein this bill is our pride, and it should be above all. Therefore, it developed
my nationalism when the lawmakers continue insisting to approve the bill until it
turns into Republic Act no. 1425 which is also known as Rizal Law.

How does it develop and/or promote patriotism to you?

The motive of the lawmakers developed my patriotism. Initially their aim is
enjoined institutions to develop moral character, personal discipline, civic
conscience and teach duties of citizenship. Appreciating that Rizal’s life and
works are part of our history that shaped our character as Filipinos is an act that
clearly shows patriotism. Now, that Rizal Law existing, and I am now under this
course I developed patriotism and I appreciate Rizal’s role during his times to
give us the freedom that we are experiencing today. Personally, as I continue to
study in this course, the Rizal’s stereotypical image during my elementary and
high school days is way different than what I currently learning which enables
me to show patriotism just like how Rizal did.
How does it develop and/or promote volunteerism to you?
As I have mentioned earlier, Filipinos are very sensitive about this topic and
very religion centered type of people. Therefore, it is very hard for lawmakers to
approve this bill against Catholic’s criticism. It developed my volunteerism
when the lawmaker shows their determination to make the bill a Rizal Law.
Now, their volunteerism at that time teaches future generations of Filipino
citizen how to be a good and real Filipino that embodies the nationalism,
patriotism, and volunteerism. Their determination before is now shaping the
youth which is the hope of Filipino’s future.
