I. Solving Problem:

1. Given the following particulars, determine the regulation of a 2400Volts, single-phase alternator
delivering a current of 120Amperes at:
a. Unity power factor
b. 0.8 power factor leading
c. 0.71 power factor lagging
Test Results: full-load current of 120Amperes is produced on short circuit test by a field excitation
of 4.5Amperes.
An emf of 600 volts is produced on open circuit by the same excitation. The armature resistance is
0.6Ω.

2. A 100KVA, 240V, 60Hz single-phase alternator has an effective resistance and reactance of
0.02 and 0.05, respectively. Calculate the per cent regulation when the alternator is delivering
rated current at a power factor of:
a. Unity power factor
b. 0.866 leading power factor
c. 0.866 lagging power factor
3. A 480 volts, 130KVA, 60Hz, wye-connected alternator was tested and the following
information were recorded. The open circuit voltage is 510 volts with an excitation
current of 5 Amperes dc. With the same excitation applied to the short circuit test, the
reading of the ammeter is the rated current. When a dc voltage of 12 volts applied to two
terminals, the current of 30 Amperes is measured. Calculate the:
a. Resistance of the alternator per phase
b. Impedance of the alternator per phase
c. Reactance of the alternator per phase
d. Percent Regulation at .8 power factor lagging
Assume the effective resistance is 1.5 times the ohmic resistance.

4. Two Alternators running in parallel supply the following loads:

Load 1: 1,400KW at 0.9 power factor lagging
Load 2: 1,000KW at 0.8 power factor lagging
Load 3: 800KW at unity power factor
Load 4: 600KW at 0.8 power factor leading
If the load of Alternator A is adjusted to 2MW at a power factor of 0.95 lagging, find the:
a. KVA and power factor of the load
b. KVA and power factor of Alternator B
