JOB SAFETY ANALYSIS

WITH TAKE TWO

What is Job Safety Analysis?
A systematic method of identifying hazards &
control measures to safely perform a specific task.

• It is a PROACTIVE TOOL for planning

• It is a process of determining hazards

associated with an activity.

• And then create safe procedures to prevent

unwanted events / accidents / mishaps
When To Conduct JSA– SOME EXAMPLES

• All non routine jobs which involves critical

activities having potential for serious injury and
/ or fatality.
• Confined space Entry
• Energy (Electrical Power, Compressor air,
Steam and oils etc.
• Working at heights
• Deviations from SHE procedures and SOP”s
• Rigging & Hoisting
• Hot work (flames / sparks)
• Case of safety system impairment
• E.g. Hydrant system out of use for maintenance
Benefits of JSA
• Reduces Safety Incidents
• Involves teams from all levels in
organization

• Improves awareness of hazards and/or

identify new ones

• Ensures that the right “corrective and

control measures” are in place and reflected
in proper job procedures

• Continuously improves Safety Management

Hazard identification
Implementing Controls

Applies to all employees, including

contract/contractor employees and
visitors who may be involved in the
activities.
The JSA Steps
Break the job down into the steps or
tasks performed while doing the job
Example of Task Breakdown for PUMP
MAINTENANCE

• Isolate Electrically & Chemically • Go to the pump

• Remove the suction and discharge • Remove tools from box
distance pieces & close valve • Isolate Electrically & Chemically
• Open the drain plug & drain the • Loosen the bolt, remove the suction and
pump & open the casing. discharge distance pieces & close valve
• Wash the pump completely. • Sit down, open the drain plug & drain the
pump.
• Dismantle & inspect the pump.
• Open the casing and drain again.
• Repairing & spare replacement.
• Wash the pump completely.
• Assembling of the pump.

isolations
• Assemble the pump.
• Trial run
• Remove electrical & chemical isolations
• Fix the pump guard
• Trial run
• Fix the pump guard
Identify and list the hazards associated with each
task (do one task first, then another, etc.)
Identify Hazards in the task with respect
to

• Physical

• Ergonomical

• Chemical

• Environmental

• Biological
PHYSICAL HAZARDS
• Electrical,

• Radiation,

• Sound, vibration,

• Mechanical/machines,

• Falling (objects & people)

• Fire
ERGONOMICAL HAZARD
• Back injury

• Hand, wrist, arm, neck stress as a result

of computer use

• Uncomfortable positions which cause

stress to the muscles

• Injury due to over exersion

• Muscle tearing
CHEMICAL HAZARDS
• Liquids, Gasses, Solids

• Enter the body by means of :

• Swallowing (mouth)

• Absorbtion (skin)

• Inhaling (nose)
ENVIRONMENTAL
HAZARDS
• Emissions

• Spills

• Products that pollute the earth

• Ground water

• Wastes
BIOLOGICAL HAZARDS
• Hepatitis,

• Hiv-infected

• Legionnaires disease

This is a highly specialized area, where

health care professionals should be
consulted

Hierarchy of Hazard Control
Most Effective •Elimination
•Substitution
•Engineering Controls
• Administration Controls
Least Effective • Personal Protection
SOME EXAMPLES OF EXISTING
CONTROLS

1. Safety Interlocks
2. Machine guarding
3. Special tools and equipment
4. Wearing PPE
5. Permit-to-work
6. Standard Operating Procedures
7. Standard Maintenance Procedures
8. Onsite-offsite emergency program /
Emergency response-evacuation
procedure
EXAMPLES OF ELIMINATION
1. Lockout equipment

2. Install blind /blank

3. Modify process to eliminate need

for hazardous activity (e.g auto
sampling)

4. Fully automate process

EXAMPLES OF SUBSTITUTION
1. Use alternate materials (eg lower flash
point, use Sodium Hypochlorite instead
of Chlorine)

2. Use tools instead of handling with bare

hands

3. Use trolley and truck (instead of carrying)

4. Automate process
EXAMPLES OF ENGINEERING CONTROL
1. Intsalling interlocks

2. Modifying equipment

3. Use special tools for the job

4. Redesign workplace layout

5. Install noise enclosure

6. Machine guarding
EXAMPLES OF ADMINISTRATIVE CONTROLS
1. Implementing permit-to-work system

2. Barricading area

3. Job rotation (to reduce fatigue)

4. F o l l o w i n g j o b p r o c e d u r e s / w o r k
Instructions

5. Working in pairs

6. Testing for hazardous atmosphere

TAKE 2
“TAKE TWO” means taking two minutes to
think through a job before the job is actually
started

Talk Have I talked with everyone involved with this job?

Action Do I know the proper actions I need to follow to
do this job safely?

Knowledge Do I have the proper knowledge to do this

job safely?

Do I have the proper equipment, including
