Common Core Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.5.2

Determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported by key
details; summarize the text.

Learning Target: I can summarize a nonfiction text by determining two or more main ideas
and identifying key supporting details.

Anticipatory Set: (10 minutes) Watch Khan Academy video and have a quick discussion
between student partners
● Assign students as either #1 or #2
● #2 tell #1 -- What is a summary?
● #1 tell #2 -- How do you think a nonfiction summary is different from a fiction
summary?
Model: (15 minutes)
● Read Beastly Bee-havior
● Teacher will model thinking aloud
● Use sentence frames to write a summary on the board

Guided Practice: (15 minutes)

● Have students read Jane Goodall passage (page 12) on their own
● Have students use sentence frames to write their own summary
● Go through this together as a class

Independent Practice: (30 minutes)

● Cause and Effect Summary -- Frogs at Risk
● Assign student partners
● Have students read the passage and write a summary on their own
● Then get up and act it out
● More passages if they finish early:
○ Description -- A Big Birthday Celebration
○ Problem and Solution -- Lincoln and the 13th Amendment to End Slavery

Check for Understanding:

● Walk around during guided practice and independent practice and check in with
students to make sure they are identifying two or more main points and using key
details from the text to support those main points

Closure: Share their summaries and/or have volunteers act out their summaries

Differentiation
For student with ADHD:
● Preferential seating
● Partner with someone they work well with who will help keep them on task
● Encourage them to really work on the get up and act it out part of the independent
practice so they can move around
