IELTS SPEAKING CLASS

TOPIC: MUSIC
PART I:
Students answer questions about themselves related to the topic.
1. Do you often (like to) listen to music?
2. When do you listen to music?
3. What’s your favourite kind of music?
4. How do you feel when you listen to this music?
5. Have you ever been to a concert before?
6. Do you like to listen to live music?
7. Have you ever learned to play a musical instrument?
PART II:
Students will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. They have one
minute to think about what they are going to say. They can make some notes to
help them if they wish.

Describe a song that has special meaning for you.

You should say:

What kind of song it is

How you found it

What it is about

And explain why it is meaningful to you

PART III:
Students have a longer discussion on the topic. The examiner will ask them
further questions connected to the topic in Part 2.
1. What do old people like to listen to?
2. How would your grandfather feel if you gave him some hip-hop music to
listen to?
3. Why do you think people of different age groups have different favourite
songs?
4. What kinds of music do (small) children in Vietnam like to listen to?
5. What are the differences between popular music and the music that (young)
children like to listen to?
6. Do you think pop stars can be a bad influence on young people?

USEFUL WORDS/ PHRASES OR IDIOMS ABOUT MUSIC…


In the IELTS exams, students are required to have a wide enough
vocabulary to discuss topics at length and make meaning clear in spite of
inappropriacies. Therefore, helping students extend their lexical resources is
necessary. Here are some vocabularies and phrases about the topic that
teachers can explain to students and give them chances to practice using the
words and phrases in their discussion.

√ vibrant [adj] the sound which is strong and vigorous


√ became a hit: when a song becomes a hit, it means that it is super popular
√ To go viral [exp.]: to become popular, widely known
√ catchy melody: the melody is the part that you sing along with and if it is
catchy, it means that it is easy to sing along with and people like it, you
easily remember it and it sticks in your mind.
√ meaningful lyrics: lyrics are the words in a song and if they are
meaningful, they actually mean something or have some sort of importance
√ lift me up or lift someone up: to make someone feel better.
√ pick up my energy [phr. v] to get better, stronger, to improve
√ Stream (v) to watch something online
√ take my eyes off [idi] find someone/something interesting or attractive
that you watch them all the time
√ to be tone deaf [adj]: someone can’t hear the different tones or someone
can’t sing correctly along
