This paper has three (3) pages and five (5) questions. Please answer one (1) compulsory
question from section (1) and any three (3) questions from section 2.

SECTION ONE: Answer the following Compulsory Questions.

1) (i) Differentiate between the terms “Primary sources of energy” and


“Renewable energy resources”. 2 Marks

(ii) State FOUR primary sources of energy for electric power generation.

(iii) Solar Power Generation and Hydro-electric Power generations are two
examples of green energy base power generation methods. Explain in detail
the characteristics and features of either method mentioned above.

Use diagrams where necessary.

(iv) Thermal-electric Power Plants and Diesel-electric Plants are examples of non-renewable
base power generation methods. State one (1) application and three (3) advantages and
disadvantages of both method.

2) (a) (i) Define the term “Power System” 1 mark

(ii)Sketch a schematic depicting the structure of a power system. 4 marks

(iii) Differentiate between the Primary distribution systems and the Secondary
Distribution System. 4 marks

(b) Two basic circuit arrangement used for Secondary Power Distribution System
are “Simple-Radial Distribution System and “Primary Selective System”.

(i) State two other circuit arrangements commonly used. 2 marks

(ii) Using diagrams illustrate the “Simple-Radial Distribution System and “Primary
Selective System”.

4) An “Electrical Tariff” can be defined as “a pricing structure an electrical supplier charges a


company for energy consumption”.

(i)State and explain ANY THREE characteristics of a Tariff. 6 marks

b) (i) State six types of tariffs 3 marks

(ii) Differentiate between any two types of tariffs stated above 6 marks

c) A sample distribution system is shown in Fig 1. below. One of the feeders supplies an
industrial load with peak of 2 MW and the other supplies residential loads with a peak of 2MW.
Combined peak demand is 3MW. Determine

i) the diversity factor of the load connected to the transformer 2 marks


ii) the load diversity of the load connected to the transformer 2 marks
ii) the coincidence factor of the load connected to the transformer. 1 mark

5) (a) Transducers may be classified as “self generating or externally powered”. Explain


what is meant by both terms and give two examples of each classification. 6 marks

b) State and Explain the functions of the main components of a Programmable Logic
Controller. 4 marks

c) Explain in detail the principles of operation of a SCADA system. 10 marks
