RESIDENTIAL WIRING CONNECTIONS

PART 1 GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION OF WORK

A. This Section specifies the minimum technical requirements for designing,


engineering, furnishing, manpower, installing and supervision, of electrical wiring
installation for residential buildings as per Contract Documents.

B. The Contractor shall be responsible to check the integrity of electrical wiring


installations specified in the Contract Drawings/Documents. When this check
indicates that the specified electrical wiring connections are not adequate, then the
Contractor shall notify the Royal Commission and take the necessary action/changes
with the approval of the Royal Commission.

C. The Contractor shall also check and verify every requirement, aspect and detail
necessary for coordinating with new or existing systems of residential electrical wiring
installations.

D. These Specifications define the minimum requirements for electrical wiring


installations as per IEC/SASO or North American based standards specified in
par. 1.04.

E. Where works interface with Saudi Electricity Company - Eastern Operating Area
(SEC - EOA) or Marafiq, the equipment/materials and installation system shall
comply with latest revision of the interface companies standards, and shall be
reviewed and approved by the interface companies.

A. This Section covers splices and terminations, including crimping tools for making
electrical wiring connections to equipment and utilities for residential buildings as per
Contract Drawings/Documents.

1.04 REFERENCES

A. The referred codes and standards are intended to provide an acceptable level of
quality for materials, products and workmanship. In case of conflict between these
standards and the text of this Specification, the Specification text shall govern.

B. The latest revision of the referred codes and standards shall be used wherever
applicable. In case of conflict, the Contractor shall propose equipment, materials and
processes conforming to one group of codes and standards.

1.05 DEFINITIONS

A. compression connectors: Connectors which are compressed onto the conductor


using a die and high mechanical force. The process is not reversible and the
connector becomes a permanent part of the conductor. The connector can only be
removed from the conductor by either cutting the conductor or the connector.

B. connector or splice: A device used to physically, and electrically join two or more
conductors.

C. electrical tape: Electrical tape made of PVC with self-adhesive backed used as
primary splice insulation over jointing the two or more wires at not more than 600 V,
also, it is used for outer jacket of the cables and conductors for identification of
circuits by colors, it is also available in various colors.

D. mechanical connectors: Connectors which are attached onto the conductor using,
generally, a standard tool. The process is reversible and the connector can be
removed from the conductor without cutting the conductor or the connector.

E. terminal lug: A device attached to a conductor to permit connection to a terminal.

F. wire nut: A plastic device used to join two or more wires together, specifically used
for building wires.

1.06 SUBMITTALS

A. The Contractor shall submit to the Royal Commission, under the provisions of
SECTION 01330, the following items for review and approval before commencing
Work:

1. Vendor drawings and original product data sheets shall be provided as defined
in and particularly as listed below:

a) List of manufacturers.

b) Manufacturer’s literature including installation instruction for electrical


terminal lugs, connectors or splices, wire nuts and PVC tape.

c) Quality Control Program as specified in SECTION 01450.

d) Factory test reports.

e) Samples of electrical terminal lugs, connectors or splices, wire nuts and


PVC tape for approval by the Royal Commission.

f) Certificates of compliance.

B. Field Test Reports and As-built drawings shall be submitted after the completion of
installation.

1.07 QUALITY CONTROL

A. The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of work and shall develop and
propose programs and methods of construction and testing to achieve the specified
quality to the approval of the Royal Commission in accordance with
SECTION 01450.

1.08 HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

A. All works undertaken in relation to this Specification are to be completed in full

accordance with the respective health and safety requirements established by the
following:

1. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

a) Legislation, Regulation, Standards and Codes.

2. Royal Commission Regulations

a) Standards, Contractual Conditions, and Health and Safety Systems.

3. Contractor

a) Health and Safety Standards and Systems as accepted by the Royal


Commission.

B. In the absence of any of the above, best accepted industry practice shall be
employed throughout

1.09 FACTORY TESTING

A. General

1. Splices or connectors, terminal lugs, wire nuts and electrical PVC tape, shall
be tested at the factory in accordance with approved manufacturing test
procedures conforming to applicable codes and standards, splice and
termination accessories shall comply with the specifications and operational
requirements.

1.10 SERVICE CONDITIONS

A. All the termination and splice accessories installed indoors shall be suitable for
continuous operation under the following service conditions:

1. Ambient Air Temperature

a) A maximum of 40°C.

b) A minimum of 0°C.

c) Average temperature, measured over a 1 month period, is a maximum


of 35°C.

2. Relative Humidity (Average Value)

a) For a period of 24 hours, does not exceed 95%.

b) For a period of 1 month, does not exceed 90%.

B. All the termination and splice accessories installed outdoors shall be suitable for
continuous operation under the following service conditions:

1. Ambient Air Temperature

a) A maximum of 50°C.

b) A minimum of 0°C, unless a lower temperature is specified in Contract


Drawings.

c) Average temperature, measured over a period of 1 month, is a


maximum of 45°C.

2. Altitude is less than 1000 m, unless a higher altitude is specified on the


Contract Drawings.

3. Average Value of the Relative Humidity

a) For a period of 24 hours, does not exceed 95%.

b) For a period of 1 month, does not exceed 90%.

c) Relative humidity may be temporarily 100%.

C. All the termination and splice accessories to be installed in classified areas shall be
suitable for installation within the electrical area classification in accordance with
NEC Article 500, and as indicated on the Contract Drawings.

1.11 DELIVERY, HANDLING AND STORAGE

A. The Contractor shall deliver, handle and store equipment and material units in
accordance with SECTIONS 01650 and 01660, as well as the following
requirements:

1. All materials shall be delivered to the site originally packed, securely wrapped
and labeled by manufacturer in unopened containers. Protect materials during
delivery and comply with manufacturer’s direction.

2. Termination and splice accessories shall be stored at job site strictly according
to manufacturer’s instruction. Store termination and splices accessories in dry,
clean and ventilated place.

3. Damage to the materials and equipment shall be avoided during handling and
shipment or transportation.

4. The Contractor shall be responsible for any damage to the materials or


equipment during storage, handling and transportation.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 GENERAL

A. All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when
available, from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products
manufactured out-of-Kingdom must be approved by the Royal Commission.

B. Where Royal Commission utilities interface with Saudi Electricity Company - Eastern
Operating Area (SEC - EOA) or Marafiq, the termination and splice accessories shall
be approved by interface companies.

C. The materials shall be listed on approved standards listed as par. 1.04. All materials
shall be new and unused, and free from defects.

2.02 TERMINAL LUGS, SPLICES AND CRIMPING TOOLS

A. General

1. The cable terminal lugs and splices for use in residential buildings, wires, and
cables, shall meet the following requirements:

a) Cable terminal lugs and splices shall be provided in accordance with


UL 486A.

b) Cable terminal lugs and splices including wire nuts and electrical tape
shall be rated of 600 V, and maximum operating temperature of 90°C,
and shall be suitable for use in service conditions specified in
par. 1.10.

c) Appropriate dimensions or sizes of the cable terminal lugs, connectors,


or splices including wire nuts, shall be as specified in the Contract
Drawings/Documents.

B. Terminal Lugs

1. Cable terminal lugs shall be made of wrought copper with an electro tin-plated
finish compression type.

2. All the cable terminal lugs shall be provided with one or two holes, short or
long barrel type with die stamped code (crimping tool die number), as required
by the application, or as specified in the Contract Drawings/Documents.

3. All the cable terminal lugs shall be suitable to fix by bolts and screws.

C. Splices or Connectors

1. As required by the application, the cable connectors or splices shall be


provided as specified herein, compression sleeve type, wire nut type, electric
tape and splices, shall meet the following requirements:

a) Compression Sleeve Type Connectors

1) Compression sleeve type connectors shall be made with wrought


copper with an electro tin-plated finish.
2) For splicing copper to copper conductors, copper compression
sleeve type connectors shall be used.
3) Compression sleeve type connectors shall be provided with die
stamped code.
4) Length of the sleeve type connector either short or long barrel
shall be specified in the Contract Drawings/Documents.

b) Wire Nuts
1) Wire nuts shall be made with nylon or vinyl cap insulated twist-on
type, and shall meet the requirements of UL 486C.
2) Wire nuts shall be inner wire grip.
3) Wire nuts shall be heat and moisture resistant, flame retardant,
and shall meet the requirements specified in par. 2.02 A.3.

D. Electrical Tape

1. As a primary electrical insulation for splicing building wires, the vinyl plastic
electrical tapes can be used, and this electrical tape shall be in accordance
with UL 510.

2. The electrical tape shall be PVC self-adhesive back, flexible, easy to


wraparound, and removable type.

3. Width of the electrical tape shall not be less than 19 mm, and thickness shall
not be less than 0.18 mm (7 mil).

4. Electrical tape shall be all weather protected, flame retardant, heat and
moisture, oil, gas, alkalis, chemical, corrosion, abrasion resistant, and suitable
to use as specified in par. 2.02 A.3.

E. Crimping Tools

1. The Contractor shall provide the crimping tools and appropriate dies as
recommended and approved by the manufacturer of terminal lugs, connectors
or splices, and shall comply with the standards in par. 1.04.

2. The crimping tools shall be of approved equipment to crimp the barrel of the
terminal lugs or connectors.

3. Crimping tools shall be heavy duty, high-quality, with rubberized thermoplastic


handles.

4. Crimping tools shall be suitable to use for insulated or non-insulated terminal


lugs and connectors.

5. The Contractor shall provide the crimping tools either including wire cutter,
insulated grips, wire stripper, screw cutter type or mechanical type, manual
hydraulic type, as required by the application, or as specified in the Contract
Drawings/Documents.

6. The mechanical type and manual hydraulic type crimping tools shall be
provided with the appropriate dies, as required by the application.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01 GENERAL

A. The Contractor shall provide all materials, equipment and labor as deemed
necessary for proper execution of the work.

B. All the residential wiring connections/terminations and splices shall be performed in


professional manner, in conformance with the applicable codes and standards
specified in par. 1.04, and the best electrical engineering practice. Work shall be
performed by skilled workers equipped to produce satisfactory results in a safe and
substantial manner, so as to avoid undue stresses.

C. Before making electrical connections to utility services and equipment, the Contractor
shall check the availability of supply voltage and the current ratings at the location,
and check the polarities. The Contractor shall ensure the supply of power, match the
nameplate rating of the equipment, and make connections as per the approved
drawings and manufacturer’s instructions.

D. If required, the Contractor shall also provide the splice and terminations kits with
manufacturer’s services of a competent and experienced Engineer, to supervise the
electrical connections to the electrical and other related equipment, and for the
correct installation, operation, service, and maintenance of the equipment.

E. All Saudi Electricity Company - Eastern Operating Area (SEC - EOA) or Marafiq
direct interface work, shall be done with prior approval and in strict accordance with
interface companies standards.

F. The Contractor shall be responsible for electrical connections to the mechanical and
telecommunication equipment, in addition to electrical equipment and coordination
with the relevant disciplines.

G. For grounding installations, refer to SECTION 16060.

3.02 TERMINATION, SPLICES OF WIRES AND CABLES

A. Termination and splicing of wires and cables shall be made with the suitable terminal
lugs specified in par. 2.02, sizes of the terminal lugs shall be as per the Contract
Drawings.

B. Electrical connections shall be made and tested in accordance with the standards
specified in as par. 1.04.

C. Where required, splices or joints for flexible building wires, shall be made only with
nylon cap insulated inner grip twist-on type wire nuts specified in par. 2.02 C. For
temporary or preliminary joints, electrical tape is acceptable.

D. The splices or joints shall be made only in accessible junction boxes, or accessible
conduit fittings.

E. For termination and splices of wires and cables, the Contractor shall use approved
crimping tools and appropriate dies.

F. Tightening of electrical connectors and terminal lugs shall be in accordance with


manufacturer’s catalog torque tightening values. If manufacturer’s catalog are not
indicated, use those specified in UL 486A.

3.03 TESTING AND COMMISSIONING

A. General

1. The Contractor shall carry out all site tests in accordance with approved test
procedures, codes and standards, to ensure that all the wire/cable termination
and splices comply with the specifications and operational requirements. All
tests are subject to witness by the Royal Commission’s representatives.

2. At least 4 weeks prior to scheduled tests, the Contractor shall submit to the
Royal Commission an outline of the plan and procedures to be used in
performing the site inspection and tests. This outline shall include a brief
description of the test equipment, connection diagrams, proposed tests and
procedures, test sheets, calculations, reference drawings and minimum and
maximum test and performance values, in conformance with this Specification,
and acceptability of the equipment and its installation.

3. Upon completion of terminations and splices, and prior to final acceptance,


each component of every systems shall be tested to the satisfaction of the
Royal Commission.

4. The Contractor shall provide all test instruments, equipment and accessories
necessary for demonstration and putting the equipment into operation before
commissioning. All testing equipment shall be calibrated by approved
authorities, and calibration certificates shall be submitted to the Royal
Commission for their review and approval.

5. Upon completion of all fields testing, the Contractor shall submit to the Royal
Commission 5 copies of a certified test reports attesting that each test has
been performed in accordance with the approved test procedures. The report
for each test shall include the name of the person in-charge of the test and the
date of performance. All factory and field test reports shall be included in
Operation and Maintenance Manuals.

6. Special care shall be taken during fields testing, including the safety of
personnel, and the test apparatus, wires and cables, terminations and splices,
and their accessories from injuries and damages.
