Angles formed In Circles

Central and Inscribed Angles

Page |5

Solution: The circle is 360o . BD is a diameter therefore Arc BAD and Arc BCD are semicircles (each
measure 180o ). Since Arc AB is 120o , then Arc AD is 60o and since Arc BC is 150o , then Arc CD is 30o .
1. ∠ CBD is an inscribed angle and Arc CD is the intercepted arc. Inscribed Angle Theorem – the
measure of the Inscribed Angle is one - half the measure of the Intercepted Arc.
1
∠ CBD= ArcCD
2

∠ CBD= ( 30o ) =15o .

3 Saddest Lessons in Math

Parallel Lines: lines that will never meet
Asymptotic Lines: lines that will approach but will never meet
Tangent Lines: Lines that will only meet once and never again

Solution: AC is a diameter; therefore, it bisects the circle into two equal parts (ABC and ADC are
1 1 o
semicircles). Inscribed Angle Theorem. ∠ ADB= ArcAB → 40= ArcAB → 2 ( 40 )= ArcAB=80 . Since
2 2
ArcAB is 80 , then ArcBC is 100 . And since Arc CD is 70 , then Arc AD is 110 o.

1. Inscribed Angles in the Same Arc Theorem. Since ∠ ADB and ∠ ACB intercepts the same arc (Arc
AB), and ∠ ADB=40o , then ∠ ACB=40o .
Hint: Answer the questions in order. You may write your answers beside the items. Do not forget to write
the degrees.

Tangent Lines and Segments

Solution: Tangent Line Theorem

Since ES is perpendicular to SP, the angle
formed is 90 o. Because one of the interior angles
of the triangle is a right angle, then the triangle
formed is a Right Triangle. To find one of the
segments of a right triangle use the
Pythagorean Theorem.

ES2 + SP2=EP 2

102 + SP2=262

SP2=262 −102

SP2=676−100

SP2=576
SP=√ 576=24 units

Solution: Tangent Segment Theorem

FL=3 cm, therefore, it follows that FE=3 cm.
(Do the same with the other given)
Hint: Perimeter = sum of the lengths of a
polygon. Do not forget to write the final answer
with unit.

Answer:

Angles formed by Secants and Tangents

Each number corresponds to the angle being asked. You may answer directly. Do not forget the unit
(degrees).
Solutions:
1. ∠ 1=90o Central Angle – Intercepted Arc Postulate - The measure of the central angle of a circle is
equal to its intercepted arc.
2. ∠ 2=90o Central Angle – Intercepted Arc Postulate - The measure of the central angle of a circle is
equal to its intercepted arc.
3. ∠ 3=90oThe Semicircle Theorem - An angle inscribed in a semicircle is a right angle
1 1 o
4. ∠ 4= ( arc OY ) = ∠ 4= (120 ) = ∠ 4=60 0 Inscribed Angle Theorem - The measure of an
2 2
inscribed angle is one – half the measure of its intercepted arc.
