III. Topics and Key Concept

1. Visayas’s Brief Information’s

Visayan Islands, also called Visayas or Bisayas, island group,

central Philippines. The Visayan group consists of seven large and several
hundred smaller islands clustered around the Visayan, Samar, and Camotes seas.
The seven main islands are Bohol, Cebu, Leyte, Masbate, Negros, Panay,
and Samar. These islands and their smaller neighbors make up the central group
of the Philippine archipelago.
High mountains characterize most of the Visayan Islands with the
exception of Samar and Masbate, which are exceedingly hilly. Panay has
extensive eastern plains where sugarcane and rice are farmed. Negros has large
western plains on which sugarcane is grown. Corn (maize), coconuts, bananas,
tobacco, abaca, and root crops also are widely grown, and fishing is also
important in the Visayas.
The densely populated Visayan island group constitutes an
ethnolinguistic region defined by the dominance of the three major Visayan
languages: Cebuano (which is the mother tongue of about one-fifth of the
Philippines’ population), Hiligaynon, and Waray-Waray. Cebuano speakers live
mainly on Cebu, Bohol, eastern Negros, and western Leyte. The Hiligaynon are
concentrated on Panay, western Negros, and Masbate, while the Waray-
Waray are found mainly on Samar and eastern Leyte. The two major Visayan
urban centres are Cebu City on Cebu and Iloilo City on Panay. Area 22,289
square miles (57,728 square km). Pop. (2000) 15,872,692; (2010) 18,417,821.

B. Provinces of the Region

AKLAN PROVINCE
occupies the northern third of the island of Panay and is bordered by
the provinces of Iloilo from the south, Capiz from the east, and Antique from
the southwest. It also faces the Sibuyan Sea from the north. The province
includes the island of Boracay which is located at its northwestern tip.
The province boasts high geographic diversity, ranging from white
sandy beaches, mangroves, and mountainous landscapes. It also boasts the
river Akean, which appears unique due to its "boiling or frothing"
appearance.

Capital: Kalibo
Land Area: 1,817.9 km²
Population: 451,314
Aklanon, Malaynon, Ati, Ilonggo, Kinaray-a,
Spoken Languages:
Tagalog

Brief History Aklan, originally known as "Minuro it Akean", is considered

as the oldest province in the country and is believed to have been established
as early as 1213 by settlers from Borneo ruled by Datu Dinagandan.
From the time of the Spanish colonial administration until Pilipino
was instituted as the Philippine national language, Aklan was spelled
"Acean", and its chief town Kalibo was spelled "Calivo".
In 1942, the Japanese Imperial forces landed in Aklan,
In 1945, landed by the Filipino and American troops with the
Filipino guerrillas liberated in Aklan attack from the Japanese troops during
the Second World War.

Tourism Destinations Aklan is best known for Boracay Beach, an

internationally-acclaimed destination with powdery white sands like no
other. It is the main attraction in the province.
But unknown to many of us, Aklan is home to other fascinating
tourist spots, ranging from unspoiled ecological wonders to historical and
cultural attractions.
In this module, we’ll share not only the popular Kalibo tourist spots
but also the off-beaten destinations of Aklan in other municipalities.
We hope to promote responsible tourism and boost community-
based development. At the same time, we aim to showcase the rich culture of
the original inhabitants of Aklan.

Brief History Capital: San Jose de Buenavista

Historians believe Land Area: 2,729.17 km² that
the earliest people Population: 582,012 who
settled on the Spoken Languages: Kinaray-a, Caluyanon island
of Panay were tribal
Negritos or Atis. Oral history, related as the legend of Maragtas, states that in 1212, ten Malay
datus escaped persecution from Sri-Vishaya, a Hindu-Malay empire that existed at that time in
Borneo and Sumatra. These datus, led by Datu Puti, sailed with their families and communities
from Borneo northward and landed on Panay.
There they met the Negrito chieftain Marikudo and his wife Maniwangtiwan. They
bought the island from the chieftain for a golden saduk (headpiece or helmet), and a golden
necklace, given to his wife, among other gifts. The Negritos then retreated to the mountains,
while the Borneans settled in the lowlands. Today, the landing is commemorated every year in
Antique during the Binirayan festival.
The island of Panay was then divided into three sakups (districts).
These are Hantik, Aklan, and Irong-Irong. Aklan became the present-day
Aklan and Capiz, Irong-Irong became Iloilo, and Hantik (also called Hamtik
or Hamtic) became Antique. Hantik was named for the large red ants found
on the island called lantik-lantik. The sakup of Hantik was given to Datu
Sumakwel, one of the ten datus, and who, according to tradition, was the
oldest and wisest of them. The three sakups were later governed as a political
unit called the Confederation of Madia-as, also under Datu Sumakwel.
Datu Sumakwel founded the town of Malandog, considered to be the
first Malay settlement in the country. Malandog is now a barangay in the
present-day municipality of Hamtic, which was named after the historic
sakup. In 1942, the Japanese Imperial forces landed in Antique and occupied
the province during the Second World War. In 1945, Philippine
Commonwealth forces of the 6th Infantry Regiment of the Philippine
Constabulary under the U.S. military command (1941-1942, 1944-1946)
together with recognized local guerrillas defeated the Japanese troops and
liberated the province.
The History. In the 13th century, oral tradition has it that Datu Puti, a
chieftain during the Shri-Vishaya / Majapahit Empire, together with nine
other datus, among them Sumakwel, Bangkaya, Paiburong and their
respective followers, left Borneo to escape persecution from Makatunao, the
wicked ruler of the empire. They first landed in Sinugbuhan, San Joaquin,
Iloilo along the western shores of Panay Island. Shortly thereafter, they
succeeded in bartering the island from a friendly Negrito king, Marikudo, ,
for one “sadok”- a native head gear - of gold and a golden necklace for the
king's wife, Maniwan-tiwan. Datu Sumakwel was then installed as the chief
ruler of Panay. He established a settlement in a place now called Malandog, a
barangay in the town of Hamtic.
The population growth that followed enabled the settlers to occupy
almost all of the lowlands, forcing the aborigines to live in the hinterlands.
The whole island was divided into three political units called “sakops”,
namely Hamtic (Antique), Aklan and Irong-irong (Iloilo). Datus Sumakwel,

Bangkaya ang Paiburong headed these “sakops”, respectively. The Spaniards

first reached Panay as early as the time of Legaspi in 1571. From Iloilo,
where they had first established themselves in Panay Island, the Spaniards
spread out until they virtually had the entire island under their control.
However, it was not until about the end of the sixteenth century that the
Spaniards began to exert influence on the islands. Like the rest of the Visayas
during the 16th and 17th centuries, Antique was plundered by Moro pirates.
So often and so costly were their incursions into Antique’s coastal towns that
it became necessary to build a fort near each town of the province and
maintain small garrisons there.
The first official recognition of Antique as a separate political unit
came in 1796 when it was created into a political and military province by
virtue of a Spanish Royal Order. The town of Hamtic (formerly spelled
Hantik after a big ant) was its first capital. Later the provincial government
was moved to Bugasong (formerly spelled Bugasoni) and for a while the
province was often called by that name. In 1802, the capital was transferred
to San Jose de Buenavista where it has remained up to now. Towards the
close of 1899, the Spaniards left the whole island, the institution of American
authority over the islands and the subsequent establishment of peace and
order in Panay led to the advent of a civil government in Antique on April
13, 1901.

Tourism Destinations If you’ve ever heard of “aswang” or those mystical,

fanged creatures similar to Western vampires, Antique is home to them. But
don’t worry. Those are just legends. But those are interesting stories that
should draw you to Antique as you will learn a lot about the local culture.
Though not as popular as other provinces, Antique is one of the best
eco-tourism spots in the Philippines. You’ll encounter almost every piece of
natural landscape you could think of.
White Beach? Check. Forest-clad mountains? Check. Mystical
Caves? Check. Crystal-clear River? Check. Cascading waterfalls? Check.
You’ll get to see and experience all these and a lot more when you
come to Antique.
Both local and international bloggers often tout Antique as
Philippines’ Bali Version. Here, you’ll also find lush rice terraces, rich
marine, and forest biodiversity, as well as historic churches dating back to
the Spanish times.
Now, if you’re planning to visit, here are some of the best places to
visit in Antique Philippines.

is a province in the Philippines situated in the Western

Visayas region occupying the western section of the Visayas. Its capital is the
City of Roxas.
The province has a land area of 2,594.64 square kilometers or
1,001.80 square miles. Its population as determined by the 2015 Census was
761,384. This represented 10.10% of the total population of the Western
Visayas region, 3.93% of the overall population of the Visayas island group,
or 0.75% of the entire population of the Philippines. Based on these figures,
the population density is computed at 293 inhabitants per square kilometer or
760 inhabitants per square mile.

Capital: Roxas City

Land Area: 2,594.64 km²
Population: 761,384
Spoken Languages: Capiznon, Ilonggo

Brief History Capiz is a unique interplay of history, myths and seafoods. Interesting, though
nobody is certain of its veracity, is how Capiz got its name, one legend narrates that the name of
the Province is in honor of one of the twin granddaughters of Datu Bankaya, the leader of the
district comprising today’s Capiz and Aklan. He divided his territories into two: Kapid and
Akean. The Spaniards who later settled in the area adopted the names of Capiz and Aklan.
Another legend says that it was Datu Bangkaya’s wife who gave birth to twin daughters
sometime in 1570. Twin in local Capisnon language is “kapid”.
The significance of seafood in the lives of early inhabitants was clearly reflected in other
versions: when the Spaniards came to Capiz they saw plenty of a certain fish. Asked as to the
name of the fish, the natives answered “lapis”. It is claimed that the conquerors heard “kapis” and
so the place was named. Most popular version is that when the Spaniards settled in Capiz, they
found in here abundance of mollusk known in the dialect as “pios” or “kapis”. The shell called
“capiz” is utilized for windows and decorative items.
In precolonial times, Panay Island was called Sinugbahan. Capiz
was part of Akean (now Aklan) and its name was Ilaya, thus its people were
called Ilayahon or Ilayanon.
In 1569, Miguel Lopez de Legaspi decided to leave Cebu to settle in
Bamban (the present town of Panay). The second Spanish settlement in the
country established in 1567 by his nephew, Felipe de Salcedo. One of the
two main reasons for this is he saw the advantage of the place following the
report of one of his captains: “pan hay in esta isla” (there is food in the
island). In August 27, 1570, Legaspi created the province of Panai. In 1572,
he founded the province of Ogtong (Oton) in the southern part of the island,
and to it he annexed Akean. He placed Panai under the administrative
jurisdiction of Ogtong.
In 1582, during the Governor General Ronquillo de Peñalosa’s term,
Panai was renamed Capiz and the name Panai (later spelled Panay) was
given to the island. When the Spaniard reorganized the island in 1703, they
made Akean a district of Capiz. On April 15, 1901, the United States
Philippine Commission through Act No. 115 established the second civil

government of Capiz. Aklan which was then part of Capiz was separated on
April 25, 1956 through Republic Act 1414 signed by Pres. Ramon
Magsaysay.
Today, the people of Capiz are called Capisnon (Ca-PIS-non). They
predominantly belong to the brown race. Initially, they were a blend of the
indigene, the Negrito, the Indonesian and the Malay. Later, the Arab,
Chinese, American and other races modified the blend.
Capiz is a home of two Indigenous Peoples Communities, Panay
Bukidnon and Ati, who had preserved their culture by faithfully passing it on
from generation to generation. Their philosophy, values, traditions, rituals,
language, games, foods, architecture, literature, music, dance, embroidery
express a unique way of life of respect and love to and interconnectedness of
the Divine, fellowman and environment.
Unmatched taste of seafood, beautiful and clean environment, and
inspiring cultural experience are impetus combined that molded Capisnons
to be highly community development-oriented and artistically inclined. It
bred great men and women in politics, academics, civic works, arts like
Manuel A. Roxas, the first president of the Republic of the Philippines;
Jovita Fuentes, National Artist for Music; and Daisy Hontiveros-Avellana,
National Artist for Theater.

Tourism Destinations Capiz is the second island within the Philippine

archipelago, which Ferdinand Magellan arrived at centuries ago. It is now
rising as one of the best eco-tourism spots in the Philippines.
Its ridge to reef landscapes teems with unspoiled ecological wonders
such as pristine waterfalls, mystical caves, off-beaten beaches, uncharted
forests, and scenic mountain peaks.
Meanwhile, its towns and capital city host an amazing variety of
cultural and historical destinations, some dating back to the Spanish times.
It’s more fun here, indeed.
In this article, we covered not only the famous tourist spots in Roxas
City or other parts of Capiz but also its off-beaten attractions.
We hope to showcase these to promote community-based
development, vis-à-vis environmental protection, and cultural integrity
promotion.

GUIMARAS PROVINCE
is a fourth-class island province of the Philippines located in the
Western Visayas region. Among the smallest provinces, its capital is Jordan.
The island is located in the Panay Gulf, between the islands of Panay and
Negros. To the northwest is the province of Iloilo and to the southeast is
Negros Occidental.
The province consists primarily of Guimaras Island, and also
includes Inampulugan, Guiwanon, Panobolon, Natunga, Nadulao, and many
minor surrounding islands. Geologists have concluded that the island once
formed one landmass with Panay.

Population: 162,943
Cities: -
Municipalities: 5
Barangays: 98
Districts: Lone district of Guimaras
Languages: Hiligaynon, Tagalog, English

Brief History Guimaras is known to have had a unique history. A prevailing

legend has it that two of its inhabitants called Guima and Aras, who were
lovers, went swimming and never returned. Thus, in their honor, Himal-us
was changed to Guimaras by the pre-Spanish Ilonggos.
The beauty of the island attracted the attention of the colonizers. The
Spaniards headed by Gonzalo Ronquillo de Peñalosa who established the first
Spanish settlement in Arevalo were struck by the beautiful sceneries in the
island. They noticed that its verdant mountains abounded with forest timbers,
limestone for building purposes, and excellent hunting and fishing grounds.
The Christianization of the people of Guimaras was started almost
simultaneously with those of Iloilo. For this purpose, the Spaniards organized
pueblocitos (villages) of Nayup, with San Pedro Apostol as patron saint;
Nabilhan with San Juan Bautista as patron saint; and Igang whose patron

saint was Santa Ana. For a long time, these small villages formed a “visita”
of Oton. In the 18th century, it was annexed to the parish of Iloilo. During
this period, the island was frequently raided by pirates and the growth of

fruits. It is now one of the recognized best eco-tourism spots in the
Philippines.
Home to eco-historical wonders, visiting Guimaras will lead you into

Brief History ILOILO takes its name from Irong-Irong, the old name of the
city of Iloilo, a tongue of land that sticks out like a nose on the south of Iloilo
River. The Maragtas Legend tells the story of Iloilo way back in the 13th
century, when Datu Puti and his fellow Datus, fled from the tyranny of
Sultan Makatunao of Borneo and landed at the mouth of the Siwaragan
River, now known as the town of San Joaquin, and eventually settled there.
At the that time, people called the "Atis", who were ruled by King
Marikudo and Queen Maniwangtiwang, inhabited Panay. King Marikudo
bartered the lowlands of Panay Island for a golden hat, "saduk", and a long
gold necklace, "manangyad", and other assorted gifts to the Bornean Datus.
The latter then took complete control of the island with the "Atis" retiring to
the mountains. It was Datu Paiburong who was assigned in Irong-Irong.
Panay Island was ruled under the Code of Kalantiao, where peace and
prosperity reigned for 300 years. But this was disrupted when the Spaniards
came and established the provincial government.
As early as 1855, Iloilo opened to the world of trade and became the
biggest port in the Philippines and premier province of the country because
of various economic activities. Municipio de Iloilo became a city under the
Bacura Law in 1893.
Because it progressed steadily, the Commonwealth Act No. 158
incorporated the surrounding towns of Lapaz, Jaro, Mandurriao and Arevalo
to form Iloilo City and was finally inaugurated on Aug. 25, 1937, and was
dubbed as the "Queen City of the South". Gen. Martin Delgado became the
first governor of the province of Iloilo.

Brief History This article is from the Government of Negros Occidental:

Negros Island was originally called "Buglas", an oldnative word that is
thought to mean "cut-off." It is believed that Negros was once part of a
greater mass of land but was cut off either by what geologists all a continental
drift or by rising waters during the so-caled glacial age. Among its earliest
inhabitants were dark-skinned natives belonging to the Negrito ethnic group
with their unique cuture.
The island remained a military district up to about the middle of the
19th century. Then in 1865, Negros Occidental was raised to the category of
a politico-military province. During this time, several more towns were
established like San Carlos and Calatrava.
Religious orders evangelized the province by turns: the Augustinians,
Recollects, Jesuits, Dominicans, Seculars and again, the Recollects returning
in the 1800s.

The latter half of the 19th century was a period of rapid economic
expansion for Negros Occidental as evidenced by the growth of population
resulting from the influx of immigrants coming from neighboring provinces
like Iloilo, Antique, Capiz and Cebu.
The major boom to the province at this time was the widespread
cultivation of sugarcane and the opening of ports like those in Iloilo and Cebu
to foreign commerce.
During the last decade of the 19th century, several important events
occurred in the history of Negros Occidental. One was the making of Negros
Occidental as a separate province from Negros Oriental in 1890.

Tourism Destinations Negros Occidental is known for its vast sugarcane

plantations, making it the “Sugar Bowl of the Philippines.”
What people don’t know, however, is that these sugarcane fields used
to be pristine forests. Massive logging during the previous decades left the
province almost scarred.
Thankfully, there some remaining natural ecosystems which are now
eyed as ecotourism destinations.
If you are planning to visit, here are the best tourist destinations in
Negros Occidental. Take note. Most of the attractions included in the list are
off-beaten, raw, and unspoiled. It is hoped that ecotourism will sustain these
for generations to come.

Philippines located in the central part of the Visayas island group. It consists
of four provinces—Bohol, Cebu, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor— and the
highly urbanized cities of Cebu City, Lapu-Lapu City, and Mandaue City.
The region is dominated by the native speakers of Cebuano. Cebu City is its

Brief History Created on March 10, 1917, Bohol derives its name from the
early village of "Bool", near what is now Tagbilaran.
The island came under the Spanish rule in 1565.
Two major rebellions against the Spaniards happened in this
province: the Tamblot revolt in 1621 and the Dagohoy revolt, which
happened from 1744 to 1829, and is considered as the longest revolt in
Philippine history.
The province is also known as the home province of Carlos P.
Garcia, the fourth President of the Philippines.

Tourism Destinations Bohol is a first-class island province of the Philippines

located in the Central Visayas region, consisting of Bohol Island and 75
minor surrounding islands. Its capital is Tagbilaran City. With a land area of
4,117.26 square kilometers (1,589.68 sq. mi) and a coastline 261 kilometers
(162 mi) long, Bohol is the tenth largest island of the Philippines. To the
west of Bohol is Cebu, to the northeast is the island of Leyte and to the south,
across the Bohol Sea is Mindanao.
The province is a popular tourist destination with its beaches and
resorts. The Chocolate Hills, numerous mounds of limestone formation, is
the most popular attraction. Panglao Island, located just southwest of
Tagbilaran City, is famous for its diving locations and routinely listed as one
of the top ten diving locations in the world. Numerous tourist resorts dot the
southern beaches and cater to divers from around the world. The Philippine
Tarsier, considered the second-smallest primate in the world, is indigenous to
the island.
Boholanos refer to their island homeland as the "Republic of Bohol"
with both conviction and pride. A narrow strait separates the island of Cebu
and Bohol and both share a common language, but the Boholanos retain a
conscious distinction from the Cebuanos. Bohol's climate is generally dry,
with maximum rainfall between the months of June and October. The interior
is cooler than the coast.
It is the home province of Carlos P. Garcia, the eighth president of
the Republic of the Philippines (1957–1961) who was born in Talibon,
Bohol.
Tourism in the Philippines is one of the main economic contributors
to the economy.

Brief History Legend has it that Siquijor rose from the sea amid thunder and
lightning. To support this, fossils of clams and other sea creatures can be
found in the interior highlands.
The islands's native name was Katugasan derived from "tugas",
molave trees that covered the hills. It was earlier known to the Spaniards as
"Isla del Fuego" (Island of Fire) because of the swarm of fireflies that
proliferate the area.
Its present name is claimed to have been after King Kihod, its
legendary ruler. Another version says it came from "quipjod", a native term
meaning "the tide was ebbing". In time, the name "Siquijod" evolved until
the "d" was changed to "r" for Spanish euphony.
From 1683 to the end of the Spanish occupation, Siquijor was under
the ecclesiastical authorities in Cebu. For some time, it was administered
politically by Bohol. In 1901, it became a sub-province of Negros Oriental
and remained as such until September 17, 1971 when it became a separate
province.
Larena, the ecclesiastical and trading center, was the capital of the
island until 1972. A proclamation was later made and the capital was
transferred to the town of Siquijor.

Tourism Destinations Siquijor is a tiny island province in the Philippines

located in Central Visayas Region abundant in beautiful tourist spots. There
are so many things to do in the island like swimming and snorkeling into its
white sand beaches. Cliff jumping in its famous falls or dive into its marine
sanctuary. Visit the century old tree or its heritage sites. It is possible to visit
all these in a day or two.
Siquijor is also a known place of magic and sorcery. Many people
believed that witchcraft and witches including healers are present in the
island, it’s for you to believe it or not. This is perhaps one of the reasons why
people visit or avoid the island. Nevertheless, tourism in the province is still
growing making a voice that reaches most of the travelers in the Philippines
and other countries.
Out of this world mysteries may be associated with Siquijor but the
best things to do are be kind and respect its residents. Planning to visit the
island so soon? Check this list of tourist spots in Siquijor you may want to

Brief History During the early Spanish era, what is now called Biliran Island was
known as Isla de Panamao. The term refers to an ethnic fishing net. The present
name, believed to be adopted sometime between the late 1600s and the early
1700s, was, according to many publications, derived from a native grass called
borobiliran which once grew abundantly on the island's plains. A contending
theory states that the name came from the word bilir, which was defined in an old
Visayan dictionary to be the “corner or edge of a boat, vase or anything
protruding, like veins, or the furrow made by the plow.” The dictionary also
gives biliran as an alternate spelling for bilir. This theory is supported by the fact
that Biliran was site of the first large-scale shipyard, built in the 1600s. Galleons
were built to support the Galleon trade between Manila and Acapulco in Mexico.
The first town, named Biliran, was founded in 1712. During this time,
the island was a part of the province of Cebu. Biliran, together with the islands of
Samar and Leyte were constituted into a separate province in 1735. Later when
Samar and Leyte were split into two provinces in 1768, Biliran became part of
Leyte.

Tourism Destinations Biliran Island may be unknown to a lot of people. That is

what makes this a promising eco-tourism destination. Much of its varied
landscapes are yet to be explored, similar to that of neighboring Leyte and
Samar.
Hidden on its leaves are numerous eco-wonders such as white powdery
beaches, breathtaking waterfalls, rich forests, and towering mountains. With all
these and more, Biliran Island offers you an adventure of a lifetime.

Brief History Prior to the coming of the Spaniards in 1596, Samar Island was
called in different names (Samal, Ibabao/Cibabao, Tandaya, etc.).
In the early days of Spanish occupation, Samar and Leyte islands were
under the jurisdiction of Cebu. In 1735, Samar and Leyte were separated from
Cebu and declared into one province with Carigara, Leyte as the capital.
Consequently, during the Spanish-American colonial period, Samar was
separated from Leyte and declared as a province in 1768 with Catbalogan as the
provincial capital.
On June 19, 1965, RA 4221 was passed by Congress dividing Samar
Island into three (3) provinces: Northern Samar with Catarman as capital, Eastern
Samar with Borongan as capital, and Western Samar with Catbalogan as capital.
A subsequent legislation passed on June 21, 1969 (RA 5650) changed the title
“Western Samar” to simply Samar.
