1. The following are the Portable Fire extinguisher
Minimax classes;
 Class A Fires: these are combustible materials such
as; paper and fabric caused by “flammable solid”. It is
quenched by “WATER /DRY POWDER CHEMICAL/
FOAM” extinguisher.
Class B Fires: Flammable liquids; such as petrol,
turpentine or paint. Quenched by “FOAM / CO2 /
DRY POWDER CHEMICAL” extinguisher.
Class C Fires: Flammable gasses like; hydrogen,
butane or methane. Quenched by “DRY POWDER
CHEMICAL” extinguisher or “CO2 / FOAM”.
Class D Fires: combustible metals, chemical such
as; magnesium, aluminum, potassium. Quenched by
“CARBON DIOXIDE CO2 / SPECIAL CHEMICAL
POWER” extinguisher.
Class E Fires: fires such as, electric equipment.
Quenched by “DRY POWDER / CO2” extinguisher.
Class F Fires: cooking oils; typically, a chip. -pan
fire. Quenched by “WET CHEMICAL” extinguisher
 The colour’s of the Portable Fire Minimax
includes;
 Water Minimax: Red / Signal Red

 CO2 Minimax: Black


 Foam Minimax: Cream
 Chemical Dry Powder: Blue
 Special Chemical Powder: Blue –White

3. Precautions / Measures to be taking if a Suspicious
item is found on board at Port Norfolk includes;
 Evacuate crews or passengers in the area.
 Attach a tap seal to the investigation area , two
metres away.
 Barricade the point of incident.
 Photograph or video the area where the
suspicious items were found, but leave it
untouched and seal off the area to prevent
unauthorized access.
 Inform the port authority, P and I, MPA / ISPS,
do not use a mobile phone in close proximity.
 Keep your face and eyes to avoid contamination if
item is hazardous.
 Wait for appropriate authority arrivals.
 Inform the ship-owner , Supervisor in charge
mostly the ship Captain and Chief engineer
immediately for arranging am immediate
temporary Cordon of the area.
 Do not allow any one to be isolated in the area
unless it is an emergency situation.
 Account the total number of crew /passenger
potentially exposed to the event.
 Description of unknown suspicious item.
 Action should be taken effectively e. g. ( Package
sealed / covered , area isolated and proper
investigation).
