    The cell is the basic unit of life. All organisms are made up of one or more cells. In the 17th century, advances like the microscope led to the discovery of cells. Robert Hooke was the first to observe "cells" in cork under a microscope. Anton van Leeuwenhoek later created stronger microscopes and was the first to observe living cells. In the 19th century, scientists established that all cells come from pre-existing cells, known as the cell theory. All cells contain DNA, cytoplasm, and a cell membrane, though cell structures can vary by type of organism.
