Wishing For One More Hug

Brinlee Mackay
We headed over to my favorite restaurant for dinner, Franchescos. All I could focus on
was the smell of garlic as the worker asked my grandpa if we needed any kids menus. He of
course said yes because he knew me and my sister liked to have coloring contests. The worker
showed us to our seats, and me and my sister got busy on our masterpieces. My grandpa liked
to find any way to give me and my sister money, even if it was just a couple dollars, so he made
our coloring contest worth a prize. In between bites of garlic bread and sips of sprite I finished
up my coloring. My grandpa told us that he couldn’t choose whos was better so he gave us both
a five dollar bill. Our food came out shortly after, I got full fast because I ate too much garlic
bread so I had to get a to-go box.

When we got home we broke out the board games and card games, we always liked to
play games. A few games in my grandpa said he wasn't feeling very good so he went to bed
early. The best thing at grandma and grandpa's house was all the crafts they had so we put
away the games and got out the craft stuff. My grandma suggested that we make my grandpa
some “feel better soon” cards, so we did and put them on the fridge for him to see when he got
up. When we got done it was getting late so we cleaned everything up and got ready for bed. I
got ready for bed fast so I could pick the most comfortable couch and try to get to sleep quickly
because I hated being the last one awake.

I woke up to the sounds of my grandpa screaming for my grandma. I got up in a rush

and woke up my grandma, confused she stumbled to her feet. She ran into the bedroom where
my grandpa had been sleeping while I woke up my sister. My grandma ran back out and into the
garage, she was in such a rush that she stumbled up the stairs so my sister had to grab the pill
jar that she was holding and run it to my grandpa. My grandma called 911 and ran back into my
grandpa's room. Me and my sister tried to answer all the ladies questions, but came up short.
My sister grabbed my hand and dragged me into the back room, as she shut the door behind
me I saw two men rush into the bedroom where my grandpa had been. What seemed like hours
later I saw my parents heads poke through the doorway. I had never seen the kind of pained,
saddened look on my dad's face before. What my parents didn’t know is that, ‘Most young
children are aware of death, even if they don’t understand it’, (Ehmke, 2020).
