This is a magazine about life. About your life, mine, ours. About choices and decisions. All we
have to do is learn, be careful and apply what we learn. In other words, lifestyle is the sum of the small
choices we make every day.
This is a book about healthy lifestyles and we encourage you to read it with patience, curiosity and
love. It is about us and for us, for our health and for our lives.
I hope you’ll love it.

HEALTHY STYLE AND THE FOOD!

Pasta Making
We are not at all the same, but one thing affects us all- food. No matter where we
live and what we do, food is an element that will always bring us together. But how
has the way we prepare food evolved? Is the modern world likely to lose a generation
of chefs? No, because we have learned to prepare pasta traditionally.

”I can make a piece of world with my own two hands”

The recipe and preparation
Mix flour with eggs and water.The ratio of flour, water and eggs can be
varied.Mix together and then make into a roll.
Divide the pasta into smaller pieces.leave pasta to rest.Make into a circle thenflatten into a
circle.Use a long rolling pin, called a Matarello.This word means ”crazy”.
Roll into a circle, roll around the rolling pin.Keep turning the circle, which becomes
thinner and thinner.Cut along the rolling pin.
Cut into rectangles and place on the guitar.You need to press
down onto the guitar to make the pasta strips.
It helps when a friend holds the frame.
The fresh pasta is now ready to be
cooked.

The art of making pasta is a cultural heritage!

Let's play our traditional games!

A healthy lifestyle means exercising every day, so we played games and

in the end we found that all our games are the same.Everyone knows that
the sport brings a varied range of benefites to the body.

Movement means energy and an active life. And…An apple a day keeps the doctor away,but.. the
onion a day keeps everyone away!

Health and energy in a glass? Apples are rich in vitamin C helping the immune system, bones and
muscles

HEALTHY STYLE AND THE FOREST!

The forest is an essential element for life and it means life.The forest
provides us oxygen, fresh air joy and biodiversity. But the secular forests are
in danger all over the world unfortunately.
What can we do for the forests?

 Dont cut the trees;

 Plant more trees;
 Recicle;
 Save energy;
 Use our car less.

It is a global trend for green , for think green.We must be green and we must think green.
Why Green?
 Because green is a power colour;
 Green means light;
 Green means nature;
 Green means healthy;
 Green means life.

8
So choose the right path and protect the forest- our source of life and
healthiness .

In order to be protected you must protect. When we are in the middle of the nature we must leave
only our fingerprints.

Promoting a Healthy Lifestyle at Secondary Mustafa Aykin Elementary School, Istanbul

At Mustafa Aykın Primary School we promote and live a healthy lifestyle through a range of
different activities and strategies,
1. We celebreted “water day” (22th March)in each class;
2. Construction of a Rain Gauge;
3. Our students gave a presentation in each classroom about erosion;
4. Observing Water Accumulation;
5. Rainwater Harvest.

1.We celebreted “water day” (22th March): Every 22th March is “water day”. This year some
students from our pirimary school gave a presentation about “water day”. They visited all classes and
explained the importance of water.

A movie about water was shown to the students by their teachers.

Our kindergarten teachers and

Students prepared a
clipboard about water
conservation

The water is so important for us. We opened an exhibition about” Where is the water inside
of our life.”

11
2. Construction of a Rain Gauge
Activity Time: Materials Needed:
40 minutes empty plastic bottle, scissors, ruler.
Goals:
Predict the measurement results.
Compare the measured results with the predicted results.
Tell the result of the measurement.
Reveal the results by examining a graph.
Application:
The teacher asks the students, “How is the weather today?” and listens to the responses. The
teacher asks the students how many different weather conditions they know and draws their answers on
a piece of paper.
The teacher shows the students the weather condition graph that s/he has with her/him. The
teacher says that they will complete/color this graph together, by looking at the weather condition every
morning. Every month the graph will start new and be compared with the previous month’s graph. For
example, “In January there were 4 days with snowy weather.
As for February, there was only 1 day with snowy weather.” While doing this comparison,
discuss what season the current month falls into.
After the teacher and students hang the weather condition graph in a designated place in the
classroom, the teacher will instruct the students to answer these questions: Does it rain the same amount
every day? How could we measure this? The teacher listens to the students’ answers.
The teacher then tells the students that they can design a rain gauge to measure the amount of
rain with the help of a bottle.
The teacher cuts an empty plastic bottle into two. The top piece is inserted upside down into
the bottom piece.
The students prepare rain gauges with the teacher and place rain gauges outside in a
predetermined place. In order for the rain gauge to be able stand upright, you can circle stones around
the bottle.
On rainy days, students, along with the support of their teachers, measure and note the
amount of rainwater that has flowed into the rain gauges. The water in the bottle will be emptied after
each measurement. The measurements are compared with one another every day.
Points to be considered:
In order for the students doing this application to observe and reach a conclusion by
comparing the daily rainfall, the teacher should make notes of each day’s measurement results.
The weather graph should be filled in every morning and become part of the class routine.

12
5.Rainwater Harvest:

Activity Time:
 40 + 40 minutes
Materials Needed:
 various sizes of empty water bottles, various unused water pipes, tape, scissors, unused water
barrels

Goals:

 Make movements that require fine motor skills

 Make movements that require object control
 Teach the value of the beauty of one’s surroundings
 Tell about the beautiful and disturbing things observed around the school
Application:

1.On a rainy day, the teacher tells the students that they will go out to the school yard for a top-
secret mission. If possible, while on this secret mission, the students should not let anyone see them and
don’t leave behind any clues or trace of their activity.

2.The teacher should whisper to the students that are curious about this top secret mission, “We have
to find a secret path where the rain water drains from the school roof to the ground.” The teacher
along with the students will begin to research how the rain water comes down the roof, which path the
rain water follows as it drains off the roof, and whether or not there is a place where the water flows
outside the school. The teacher, together with the students, will find the place where the rain water
flows out.
3.Share with the students how runoff rainwater cannot be completely absorbed in the soil because the
soil becomes saturated and can sometimes cause the soil to become compacted. The teacher should
explain that the students can do something to protect the soil from the runoff rainwater and save the
rainwater from being wasted by using collected water to water other things. In this way, the students are
given the idea that they could water the plants in their classroom and also water the compost and have
no need to use any other water.
4.The teacher will give the students the various sizes of empty water bottles, various unused water
pipes, tape, and scissors that s/he has brought along. The teacher tells the students that they need to set
up a system to transport water into the barrel using these materials. Students are asked to make a drain
that carries the runoff water to the barrel by connecting water pipes and water bottles to each other.

Points to be considered:

The top of the barrel where the rain water is collected must be covered with a cloth to prevent
anything from entering.
A light layer of moss may grow in the rain water barrel. There is no need to fear, you can continue to
use your water.
