Planned Learning Outcome Two: 2

Spring 2020 I was enrolled in Biology 432: Epidemiology & Environmental with

Professor Htway. In this course, we learned the importance of annotating a research

study by interpreting the data, understanding the objectives of the study, how to read

and interpret accurate measurement, and the course had a strong focus on

understanding the pathology process of a research article. In this assignment, I had to

look for a scientific article by navigating the CSUCI library database. The article that I

chose to write about was Mapping and characterizing areas with high levels of HIV

transmission in sub-Saharan Africa: A geospatial analysis of national survey data by

Carolin Bulsara. The research study found a high HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus)

prevalence in young adults in 7 countries. The study included 7 countries: Kenya,

Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. They obtained their

sample size using geospatial analysis which is software to create accurate modeling

that could lead to discovering health predictions or trends.

HIV is a public health crisis that countries in Africa are experiencing. Over more

than 37 million people are living with HIV. Some of the data was shocking because

many of the individuals within the study had to complete a survey and the survey

concluded that there was a lack of HIV prevalence education. In America during high

school, and college sexual education is presented to some members of society in order

to become informed of prevent sexual transmission. In countries like Africa, some

physicians are not educating their patients regarding sexual transmission. This displays

that preventive medicine is a great resource in order to decrease sexual transmission.

Planned Learning Outcome Two: 3

This assignment aligned the ideas of preventive medicine, transmission, and

controlling human diseases from a public health perspective. More intervention in

patient education is needed in third-world countries in order to reduce the spread of

sexual diseases. If we educate the public the transmission rate can slowly be declined.

This would prevent the spread of disease. Communities can start decreasing their

chances of sexual disease. Condom usage is a great preventative tool that can

decrease the likelihood of obtaining a sexual disease.

I enjoyed this assignment because it displayed how marginalized communities

have greater exposure due to their lower social economics statues. The information that

obtained was how to interpret data, looking at research patterns, and understanding the

complexity of a research article. Something that I wish I could have done in this

assignment was to create a preventative strategy for this type of community by including

a PowerPoint, video, or infographics that show how to decrease the rate of sexual

transmission. By doing this type of assignment it would have added to my health

education profile. Something else that could have been added to the assignment was to

organize a small event of ten or fewer people and educate individuals regarding sexual

disease prevention. Doing this type of work could have improved my community

outreach. This is important because when I enter the workforce I could have gained

experience. What I disliked about the course was that every week we had the same

type of assignment which was to obtain an article and discuss the learning outcome

obtained. This course did however made me more competent as a student in navigating

different research database and looking for well-developed peer-reviewed articles.

Planned Learning Outcome Two: 4

Since the course consisted of a lot of reading at first I was struggling in the course

because this was not something that I frequently used. I became familiar with

understanding different resources on campus and improved my citation skills. After a

couple of weeks in the course, I was even able to show some of my peers how to

navigate the database, and every time I had to look for an article I was competent

enough to find a strong article that addressed all the things my professors were

requiring. For any health science student this course should be requirement because

the student would obtain a strong understanding of health perspective.
