Theme or Topic: Primary and secondary color

Age: 4

Number of Students: 2

Content Standards:

• P.PK.1 - Sort objects according to observable properties (e.g., by shape and

color).

Objectives:

• Students will be able to see how colors transform when different combinations
are mixed together. They will also learn about making colors lighter by adding
white.

New Awareness:

• Explore the color wheel that has the primary colors transform into different colors.

Materials:

• White construction paper, paint brushes, small paint containers, paints in red,
blue, yellow, and white, small plastic resealable bags, and the color wheel.

Activity:

To introduce my lesson, I will call students into a group and tell them that they are going
to learn about making different colors.

• I will inform students that when two or more colors are mixed, they make a
different color and I will make sure to tell them that they will see how red, yellow,
and blue mix to make a new color.
• Bring out the materials I will be using to show the class how colors change when
they are mixed together.
• I will take some red paint and brush it onto a piece of paper, then add some
yellow paint and show students how together the paint turned orange.
o As I am demonstrating, I will remind that red, blue, and yellow are
known as primary colors, or colors that can't be created by mixing
any two colors together.
o I will also tell them that secondary colors are colors that are
created by mixing primary colors together.

After my demonstration I will

• Split students into small groups to let me explore on their own.

• I will give students the option to paint on the white construction paper to mix their
colors or mix their colors in a plastic Ziploc bag.
• I will encourage students to try different color combinations to see what colors
they can make.
• I will remind students to think of the color wheel while doing the activity.

What Happened:

• When secondary colors were mixed together it changed into another color, and
when white was added into primary colors it made the paint into a lighter shade
of the color.

What Next:

• I will bring the students back into a group and review the activity by going over
the color wheel. I will encourage students to explain the concept in their own
words and ask the class questions about color combinations and let them
respond as a group.
