Organizational Culture refers to the way of life within
an organization which consists of the values, behaviours, and beliefs shared by leaders and members alike. Organizational culture is reinforced and established first by the leaders but it can also include the unwritten rules and customs that have been developed over time.
It is said that a positive culture is one of the most
fundamental recipe to an organization’s long-term success. Conversely, a poor or ineffective culture can cause dissatisfaction which in turn, discourages the individual members from performing their best at work. This case study aims to examine some of the most successful companies in the world and the organizational culture that they practice. Walt Disney Walt Disney is one of the most recognizable mass media and entertainment conglomerate in the world, having ranked 7th in Forbes World's Most Valuable Brands list in 2020. Disneyland is not only considered as the happiest place on earth for customers but it is also the happiest place to work for employees alike. Some of the benefits of being a Disney employee includes access to Mickey’s retreat, which is an exclusive area accessible only to Cast Members and their families, discounts on Disney hotels, parks, and merchandise, private healthcare and so much more. Indeed, Walt Disney’s success can be largely attributed to the way that they treat their workers. The company’s organizational culture prides itself in living its core values of quality, innovation, optimism, and decency by creating the most optimal working environment possible. Twitter Twitter is one of the most widely used social networking sites in the world with over 330 million monthly active users. As one of the biggest global tech firms, Twitter prides itself in having a team-oriented environment where every single employee is motivated by giving them all a voice to contribute to the company’s goals. In Glassdoor’s 2014 "Top 25 Companies for Culture and Values", Twitter ranked first in the list. Glassdoor is a company-review site and the list was based on the hundreds of thousands of US employee surveys. Some of the benefits of working at Twitter includes complete medical and dental benefits, paid maternity and paternity leave, 401(k) savings plan, laundry and dry cleaning service, flexible vacation policy, and so much more! Netflix Netflix is one of the most globally recognized entertainment services with over 204 million paid memberships in over 190 countries. Netflix’s organizational culture centers around wholeheartedly trusting their emplyoees to put in their best efforts. Unlike most organizations, Netflix offers unlimited vacation days to its workers. The efforts of the employees are measured by their end product instead of the number of hours that they work. Netflix’s organizational culture gives workers a chance to prove theirselves by giving them freedom to work at their own pace and by allowing them to make sound judgements of their own without micromanagement. The company also offers strong employee benefits which includes health, vision, and dental insurance, mobile phone discounts, and employee stock purchase plan, to name a few. Conclusion: A strong, positive organizational culture is indispensable not only for the overall success of the company but also for the health and well-being of the members working in it. A positive organizational culture is all about applying and living the company’s core values in day-to-day operations instead of allowing those said values to be just a bunch of meaningless buzzwords. Since organizations vary depending on goals and purpose, there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all culture template that every company should follow. Companies should examine theirselves and study the best course of action and culture to adopt that will attract and retain the best talent. A positive organizational culture is not something that can be developed overnight. It is something that requires full cooperation, patience, and hard work of every individual involved in it.
