V. THE VERDICT: GUILTY
• On the same day the court decision was
submitted to Gov. Polavieja. Immediately,
Polavieja sought the opinion of Nicolas de la
Pena and the latter affirmed the GUILTY
VERDICT.
• Polavieja order Rizal to be shot at 7:00AM on
December 30 at Bagumbayan.
VI. THE FINAL HOURS
• 6:00 am - Captain Rafael Dominguez read to
Rizal his death sentence and the manner of his
execution.
• 7:00 am - Rizal was moved to his prison cell and
was visited by Fr. Miguel Saderra Mata, Fr. Luis
Viza and then Fr. Antonio Rosell.
• 9:00 am - Fr. Federico Faura
• 12:00nn 3:30pm - wrote his farewell poem and
last letter to Blumentritt.
• 3:30pm - Fr. Balaguer arrived to discuss
religious matter to Rizal.
• 4:00pm - His mother arrives. Shortly thereafter,
Trinidad arrives to whom Rizal gave the lamp
containing his farewell poem.
• 6:00pm - Den Silvino Tunon, Dean of the Manila
Cathedral arrives while Frs. Balaguer, March
and Villaclara took turns in accompanying Rizal.
NOTES:
• December 29, Rizal wrote farewell “Mi Ultimo
Adios” or “My Last Farewell” poem and gave it to
Trinidad.
• Jesuits tries Rizal to retract his word and go
back to catholic church.
• This are his former teacher and made impact on
him.
VII. THE RETRACTION
• According to Fr. Balaguer, Rizal had already
wanted to do the retraction earlier that day.
• Rizal declined the retraction letter of Archbishop
Nozaleda and accepted that of Fr. Pio Pi y Vidal.
• He signed the retraction with 2 witnesses:
o Juan del Fresno - Chief of the Guard
o Eloy Moure - Adjutant of the Plaza
NOTES:
• Rizal supposedly confessed and retracted
against the catholic church.
• Retraction letter of Rizal is gone now.
• Only the Balaguer retraction letter is what he has
now.
VIII. THE MARTYRDOM OF RIZAL

• At 6:30 AM, Rizal was accompanied by Luis
Taviel de Andrade and Frs. March and
Villaclara.
• Rizal asked if he could face the firing squad
instead but was declined. His request of not
being blindfolded was however granted.
• Dr. Felipe Ruiz Castillo checked his pulse and
saw that everything was normal.
• Rizal was shot by a 4-man firing squad while
turning right and landed with his face facing the
sky. Time of death was 7:03 am.
• The Spanish military band played "Muerte a los
Traidores" “Death of the Traitor” while the
Spanish spectators shouted Viva Espana.
NOTES:
• 30 minutes before 7 am, Rizal and bracken got
married.
• Relatives of Rizal didn’t like bracken and think of
her as a spy setup by Spanish authorities.
• Bracken went to Cebu after Rizal died and
became teacher and one of her students is
Sergio Osmena.
• Bracken died 5 years after Rizal.
• Leonor Rivera died during the time of Rizal,
during his second pregnancy she died of blood
loss.
• Rizal was not afraid to die because he believes
he is not a traitor.
• Rizal has his best years of life in Ateneo.
IX. BURIAL
• His dead body was loaded to a carriage where
his followers together with his sisters followed
him.
• Rizal's body went directly to the Paco cemetery,
dumped on a shallow grave without a coffin and
left without a name.
• The family was not even notified where it was
buried and had to look for several cemeteries to
look for the body of Rizal.
• The loyal followers of Rizal quickly remedied the
rude treatment by properly burying him with only
the letter RPJ written on a wooden crucifix
established on top of the site.
NOTES:
• He died as a traitor sees by Spaniards, so he
was buried and treated as a traitor.
