INDIRECT
EXILE
Due to fear of what the Spanish government can
do, and as what the governor advised, Rizal
resorted to leave the motherland in hopes of
calming the allegations of the government against
him.

During his time abroad, significant
events occurred in his life, and that of
the people around him.
Rizal became active in the Propaganda Newsletter of Illustrados
in Spain, La Solidaridad

300 families were banished from their homes in Calamba,


Laguna with their major sugar granaries exploited

La Liga Filipina (1891) was established


Rizal was denied entry to Borneo prompting his unprecedented
return to the Philippines (a bait he placed by the Spanish
government to force him back to the country under Gov.
Despujol)

26 July 1892 was when Rizal arrived in Manila. From then on,
he was spied of his movements such as
• Rizal's visit to Doroteo Ongjunco's of La Liga Filipina
• Rizal's conference with Despujol; and of him showing leaflets
from Lucia's pillowcase
Despujol ordered his arrest and escorted Rizal to
Fort Santiago. An order which prompted an article
to be written in Gaceta de Filipina ultimately
pushing his exile to the southern islands of the
country—Dapitan.
- 15 July, 1892 -
Rizal, after being sentenced to exile to Dapitan
was heavily escorted from Cebu to Dapitan
- 17 July, 1892 -
Rizal was handed to Captain
Carcinero's watch.
Being in Dapitan, despite being in exile,
Rizal witnessed a pleasant life with Doña
Lolay and Narsing under a roof Rizal built
near the sea of Talisay.
In Dapitan, he practiced medicine and was
a revered practitioner even for his own
mother. Further he had significant
contributions to the community of the town.
He opperated his mother's eyes successfully.

He also once had a patient from Hong Kong who visited him in
person in Dapitan—but Rizal was not able to cure Mr. Taufer's
ailment.

DAPITAN to
BAGUMBAYAN
Trials proceeded under the eyes of Colonel
Francisco Olive. With evidences presented
against Rizal generalized into Documentary
and Testinonials.
Rizal was put to immediate trial by De la Peña's
command after studying the evidences. All the
while he was imprisoned and fined a million peso
worth of his properties; and that an army officer
was put to stand with him, not a public attorney, Lt.
Luis Taviel de Andrade.
In court, he was charged of being the
instigator of the Filipino Uprising along with
propagandist movements, books, and
publishings. To which he denied but did not
refute.
He claimed that he wrote the Constitution and By-laws of the
Liga Filipina.

Along with the number of Messrs and Mses as spectators and


inspectors, Atty. Alocer gave a speech and summarized the
charges of Rizal—ending with a proposal charge of death.

Rizal refuted to prove his innocence by which was neglected by


the court. The trial came to a close and the court was cleared.
Polavieja received the decision of the court
and approved the sentence of death. The
final order of execution was given and
dictates that the event must occur at 7:00
am of December 30, 1896 at Bagumbayan
Field.
• In the last 24 hours of Rizal’s breath, he
was busy meeting visitors, including
Jesuit priests, Josephine Bracken and
members of his family, a Spanish
newspaper correspondent, some friends,
and secretly, finishing his farewell poem.
30th of December 1896, Rizal turned his
back on the firing squad and faced the
sea. At exactly the time of 7:03 am, Dr.
Jose Rizal died at Bagumbayan Field at
the age of 35 years, five months, and
eleven days.
