DISCUSSION ABOUT THE 10 REASONS WHY READING IS IMPORTANT

1) Reading is fundamental to function in today’s society.


It is important as reading is an essential part of our daily lives. It comes in the form of reading signs, filling
out documents and even reading a map. Almost everything in our day-to-day lives involve reading. Also,
reading plays an important role now that we’re in the middle of a pandemic wherein signs and reminders
are posted to remind us of the health protocols and information about COVID-19 and one must know how
to read these in order to adhere with the rules and guidelines.

2) Reading is a vital skill in finding a good job.


It is important because a well-paying job requires many skills, one being reading. It also becomes important
as reading is needed in order to ensure that the job is legit. Reading is important as well in terms of reports,
memos, and presentations. Furthermore, one must know how to read properly especially in signing
contracts and legal documents.

3) Reading is important because it develops the mind.


Reading allows people to be more understanding and it allows for better communication skills and helps
develop our mind. Reading will not only help us become better in terms of our language skills, but it also
aids us in knowing how to effectively listen. This, in turn, would make us understand and communicate
effectively, and miscommunications or misunderstandings can be prevented.

4) It is through reading that we discover new things.


Reading allows for people to learn things outside their comfort zone and to be educated on things not
found in school. Information is easily available in today’s time. Information can be found in printed materials
such as books, newspapers, or magazine. They can also be accessed through our gadgets and through
the internet. Reading various information through various means can help us widen our knowledge about
several things.

5) Reading develops the imagination and the creative side of people.


It allows for children and teens to test their creativity and to develop talents as reading allows them to
visualize and apply. Their imagination and perspective can be improved and broadened through reading.
Not only that, they can also be creative in a sense wherein they write and formulate their own stories,
poems, etc.

6) Reading is fundamental in developing self-image.


Good readers are more confident in themselves as they know more and they feel as they are confident in
what they say and express. It gives them a boost of feeling since they are more knowledgeable about
certain topics and because they are able to do what they enjoy, which is reading.

7) Reading helps to expand the vocabulary and improve spelling.


Reading allows for people to be educated on words that aren't most known and it allows for people to
express themselves properly. Reading different materials such as books, journals, newspapers, etc. allows
one to widen their vocabulary which eventually benefits them. In a way, along with improving one’s
vocabulary, it also helps the read to improve and develop his/her spelling skills.

8) With reading we can be armed in this never-ending, life-and-death struggle


It allows for people to stand up for what they believe in as they knowledgeable on those topics. Reading
allows people to know the good and the bad. Reading also allows one to exercise critical thinking.

9) The fact of the power of written ideas communicated through reading is a foundational reason why
some governments oppose free and honest communication.
Good reader knows what is right and wrong and it allows for them to educate others and not be controlled
by the government. Reading materials can make them aware of what is actually going on and by reading
information from credible sources, the reader/individual is educated about how proper governance should
be.

10) Reading is important because words – spoken and written – are the building blocks of life.
Everything we believe in and everything that make us who we are comes from what we’ve read and heard.
Reading plays a huge role in our lives and in the world that we live in. Henceforth, reading is an important
skill for all of us and it must be continuously improved.

DISCUSSION ABOUT THE TYPES OF READING MATERIALS AND THEIR EXAMPLES

1) Developmental
These materials are intended to help develop the reading skills of the reader. These materials are also
backed with scientific studies and research in order to effectively develop and hone one's reading skills.

2) Remedial
These reading materials are specifically designed and made to help those who are facing reading
difficulties and problems such as listening/reading comprehension, fluency, decoding, etc.

Examples:
 Reading Assessment Stories (Ex. SRA Reading Laboratory and Independent Reading Level
Assessment)
 Reading and Answering Informal Reading Inventory-Graded Passages/Stories

3) Recreatory
These reading materials help the learners/readers develop a sense of appreciation, entertainment, and
enjoyment. They are also usually used by readers for their own liking or satisfaction.

 Magazine
 Comics/Comic Books

4) Functional
These reading materials help the learners/readers expand their level of comprehension and as well as their
use of learned skills in a certain area of study. They are usually used to understand and learn concepts that
are focused on a particular subject or study.

 Textbooks
 Encyclopedia
