For all kiwi birds in New Zealand in 2015, is the median weight (kgs) of male kiwi birds bigger

than the median weight (kgs) of female kiwi birds?

I think that the weights of male kiwibirds will be larger than the weight of female kiwi birds
because male bird species are usually heavier or larger than their female counterparts.

data)

Sampling
I took a simple random sampling (SRS) because every piece of data has an equal chance of
being chosen, it is relatively easy to organise and it is not biased.

Centre:
I can see on my graph the median weight for female kiwi birds is 2.859kgs and the median
weight for male kiwi birds weigh at 2.281kg. I’ve also noticed that the median for the weight of
female kiwis is nowhere near the median for the weight of male kiwi birds.
This means that the median weight for female kiwi birds is larger than the median weight for
male kiwi birds in my sample.
This may indicate that male Kiwis tend to be lighter than female kiwi birds in the population, and
this has been confirmed by the New Zealand National kiwi centre which tells us that female
kiwis are indeed heavier than their male counterparts because they lay two large eggs within the
time span of 10 days, therefore the eggs would add on that extra weight.

Shape:
I can see that the distribution for the weights of the female kiwi birds is right skewed. The
distribution of male kiwi birds is more of an irregular pattern.
This means that the female kiwi bird is much more varied, but has more data towards the
left/lighter side. The irregular pattern for the male kiwis shows that the data for the male kiwis is
less varied and more clustered around the median.
This suggests that for the female kiwi birds there is more of a variation for their weights, while
the male kiwi birds have an irregular pattern which is clustered around the left hand sign
symbolising that they usually have lower weights.

Spread:
Iqr for females kiwi birds is (3.138 - 2.647) = 0.491kgs
IQR for male kiwi birds: (2.455 - 2.093) = 0.362kgs
What do you see? I can see that the IQR for female kiwi birds is larger than the IQR for male
kiwi birds. I’ve also noticed that the range of weights for female kiwi birds is wider than the
range for male kiwi birds.
What does this mean for the sample? The smaller IQR for male kiwi birds shows that there
are more values which are clustered around its median, while the slightly larger IQR for female
kiwi birds show that the data will be more spread out.
What might it suggest for the population? It might suggest there may be more variability for
the weight of female kiwi birds, and that the weights for male kiwis is more likely to be more
condensed around the median than the female kiwis.

Interesting/unusual features:
I’ve noticed that the weights for the female kiwi birds are much more distributed than male kiwi
birds, which is clustered around the lower weight range.
My evidence can be seen through the graph, which shows that the minimum for female kiwi
birds is 2.176kgs while their maximum weight is 3.854kgs. Male kiwi birds in comparison have a
much smaller range, but have the one outlier piece of data - in which there is male kiwi who
weighs 2.953kgs.
This shows me that perhaps.. ?
There are also three female kiwi birds that are

The confidence interval for female kiwis is: 2.7553kgs - 2.9367kgs

The confidence interval for male kiwi birds is: 2.2047kgs - 2.3583kgs
We expect the population of female kiwi birds to have a median weight that is between 2.7553kg
to 2.9367kgs, and the population of male kiwi birds to have a median weight between 2.2047kgs
to 2.3583kgs. Because the confidence intervals don’t overlap, we can conclude that in the
population female kiwi birds tend to weigh on average more than male kiwi birds do.
Therefore, this sample gives us enough evidence to conclude that the median weight of female
kiwi birds tends to be heavier than the median weight for male kiwi birds.

If I were to repeat this sampling process and take another random sample, I would most likely
get different data and see different results, therefore different summary statistics. However, I
assume they would have similar ranges (minimum - maximum) and perhaps similar ICI’s, and
therefore I could make similar conclusions about female kiwi birds weighing heavier than male
kiwi birds on average.

My question was “For all kiwi birds in New Zealand in 2015, is the median weight (kgs) of male
kiwi birds bigger than the median weight (kgs) of female kiwi birds? “ From my data, graphs and
analysis, I can see that male kiwi birds are in fact lighter than female kiwi birds back in the
population.
