cermat. • Simple sentence
A sentence is a word group with two main parts – a subject and a predicate. The
subject, which usually comes first, names someone or something. The predicate,
which usually follows the subject, tells what the subject does, has or is, what is done
to it, or where it is.
Sentences

Subjects Predicates

The princess cried for help.

The lion laughed at the mouse.

The mirror in the wall broke into pieces.

The bronze statue was a gift from the witch.

The fish did not taste good.

The family’s records were written in a big book.

BING-38/48/2/13
• Past perfect and simple past tenses
The use:
The past perfect tense expresses an activity in the past which happened before
another action in past.
Examples : I had already left the office before she came to the ofice.
After she had read the letter, she cried loudly.
When I had seen the audience, I felt very nervous.
The form:

establishes the relationship between the dependent clause and the rest of the
sentence.
Examples :
o He took to the stage as though he had been preparing for the moment all his life.
o Because he loved acting, he refused to give up his dream of being in films.
o Unless we act now, all is lost.

wherever as before in order that that when while as if even if now that
though whenever as long as even though since till where

• Direct speech

Direct speech is usually placed inside quotation marks and accompanied by a
reporting verb, signal phrase, or quotative frame.
Examples:
o A South Carolina parrot was the sole witness to the death by neglect of a 98-
year-old woman. "Help me, Help me," said the parrot.
o “So if I win at that table, I’ll go on to the World Series,” said the mom I know as
some kind of government contractor.

• Adjectives and adverbs

o Adjectives are words that give us:
➢ Objective information about something (age, size, colour, origin, materials,

BING-38/48/2/14
Examples:
✓ Tom lives in a new house. (age)
✓ Tom lives in a big house. (size)

b) Kegiatan Belajar 2
Setelah Kalian memahami unsur kebahasaan teks naratif, lakukan kegiatan berikut ini.
Bacalah teks naratif di bawah ini, untuk memahami isi teks lengkapilah bagan di
bawahnya.
King Midas

Once
upon a
time,
there
was a rich king
who was never
happy. His
name name was
Midas.
Even though King Midas was already
rich, he dreamed to be richest king
in the world.
King Midas loved sitting on
his golden throne and
contemplating ways to become
richer. One day, one of his servants came to him with an old man. He said the old man
had been found wandering around in the orchard. It was Silenus, the friend of the god
Bacchus.
Suddenly, King Midas had an idea. He welcomed the old man and let him be his
guest for ten days. He served Silenus well.
After ten days, King Midas took Silenus back to Baccus. The god was very happy
to see his lost friend. He then said to King Midas that he would grant him any wish he
made.
King Midas had been waiting for the offer. This was his chance to become the
richest king in the world. Without hasitating, hea sked so that everything he touched
would turninto gold. The god Baccus granted his wish.
Upon returning to his palace. King Midas tested his new power. He picked up a
stone. Soon it turned into gold. A servant brought King Midas a bowl of water so that he
could wash his hands. As soon as he put his hands into the bowl, the water turned to
gold.Next, King Midas took a piece of bread. Before he could get it to his mouth, it too
had turned to gold. He could not eat any food beacuse it would turn to gold.
Dejected, King Midas went for walk in his garden. His children ran up to him and
he held them in his arms. They immediately turned into gold statues. King Midas cried in
sadness seeing what he had done.
Hurriedly, King Midas came to see the god Baccus and pleaded him to take his
power away. Baccus refused and asked the king to keep the gift. Then King Midas knelt
and begged for Baccus to forgive him. “It was wrong to be greedy and to love gold so
much,” said the grieving king.
Baccus felt sorry for King Midas and told him the way to cure him of the curse.
He told King Midas to go to Pactolus River and wash in its water. The king did so right
away.
On the way back to his palace, King Midas touched everything around him.
When they did not turn into gold, he was so relieved. However, his children were still
golden statues in the garden. Seeing that, he quickly brabbed a bucket, ran to Pactolus
River and scooped up some water. He went back to the garden with the bucket of water
and poured it over his golden children. They instantly came alive.
BING-38/48/2/19
King Midas then called his srvants, “Get rid of all the golden things in the palace.
I no longer wanted to see anything golden.” Now he enjoyed being able to eat and drink
again.
King Midas had found that all the gold in the world did not bring happiness. He
no longer dreamed of becoming the richest king in the world.

The Legend of Malin Kundang

A long time ago, in a

small village near
the beach in West
Sumatera lived
awoman and her son,
Malin Kundang.
Malin Kundang and his
mother had to
live hard because his father had
passed away when he was a baby.
Malin Kundang was a healthy,
dilligent, and strong boy. He usually
went to sea to catch fish. After
getting fish he would bring to his mother, or sell the caught fish in the town. One day,
when Malin Kundang was sailling, he saw a merchant’s ship being raided by a band of
pirates. To thank him, the merchant allowed Malin Kundang to sail with him. Malin
Kundang agreed in the hope to get a better life. He left his mother alone.
Many years later, Malin Kundang became wealthy. He had a huge ship and a lot
of crews who worked loading trdingd goods. He was also married to a beautiful woman.
When he was sailing on his trading journey, his ship landed on a coast near a small
village. The local people recognized that he was Malin Kundang, a boy from the area.
The news ran fast in the town; “Malin Kundang has become rich and now he is here”.
An old woman, who was Malin Kundang’s mother, ran to the beach to meet the
new rich merchant. She wanted to hug him to release her sadness of being lonely after a
long time. When his mother came near him, Malin Kundang who was with his beautiful
wifw and his ship’s crewsdenied that she was his mother. She had pleaded Malin
Kundang to look at her and admit that she was her mother. But Malin Kundang kept
refusing to do it and yelling at her. At last Malin Kundang said to her mother,”Enough,
old woman! I never had a mother like you, a dirty and ugly woman! After that he
ordered his crews to set sail to leave the old woman who was then full of sadness and
anger.
Finally, enraged, she cursed Malin Kundang that he would turn into a stone if he
didn’t apologize to her. Malin Kundang just laughed and set sail. Suddenly a
thunderstorm came in the quiet sea, wrecking his huge ship. He was thrown out to a
small island. It was really too late for him to avoid the cuurse; he had turned into a
stone.
